Sanity's Edge gives a terrific description of a not-so-special Father's Day. He needs to set his expectations a little lower - that way he won't be so disappointed. He should think "Oh boy! Today I get a card!"
That this day has the highest amount of collect calls should tell you something.
I'm on the other side of that coin. For my money, I think Father's Day is overrated. I speak to my father 2-3x each week, so it's not like I need a reason to call him (and unlike the masses you point to, I don't call collect).
Silly holiday if you ask me.

I did enjoy torturing my friend, who is a dad. I asked if he wanted to get some chow from a restaurant we both liked. He asked whether lunch or dinner? What time? I said it didn't matter to me. Doesn't matter when I go or if I go. I have no plans. No commitments. Nothing else to do.
"Damn, I envy you!"
