According to this editorial in the Ames Tribune, the dastardly Southerners have made nice people permanent members of the political underclass. He lists all the things he thinks a Democratic candidate must be in order to appeal to us, and finds it impossible-- even though Mr. Clinton managed to do it not so long ago. Twice. He's opting for blue state secession and annexation to Canada, not having the guts to try to start a new country.

Posted by: robin at November 6, 2004 11:10 AMActually, we Southerners must remember that the Democratic party is actually OURS, and that it has been co-opted by the Northeastern "intellectual elite." (I use quotes there because to my mind using either of those terms in connection with current Democratic party leadership seems questionable).
When I told my father on election night that I had reflexively voted a straight Republican ticket for the first time in my life, he opined that my great-grandmother Shaw (his grandmother) was rolling over in her grave over that. I countered that she probably wasn't, that this incarnation of the Michael Moore Democratic party little resembled the party she had voted for and ardently supported her entire life. Daddy (who also voted straight Repub) conceded I was probably right.
