Schrodinger's Fetus

Liberal Larry ponders the Stinnett case:

Yes, I know the fetus has cute little "baby hands" with cute little "baby fingers" and makes cute little "baby noises", but that doesn't make it any more human than a baby-shaped intestinal parasite. Furthermore, I don't recall this fetus being "born", nor have I read anything remotely hinting that the host organism wanted it to be. She could have been on her way to the abortion clinic for all we know. So lacking a physical birth or any sort of written documentation certifying an intent to carry the pregnancy to term, we must protect a Woman's Right to Choose and err on the side of inhumanity. It's a FETUS, and will remain one until the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals says otherwise.

The Amber Alert people must have felt the same way. The sheriff had to get his Congressman to intervene to get the alert issued:

"Because of the fact that this was a fetus, it didn't meet the criteria (for an Alert) initially," said [Sgt. Sheldon] Lyon [of the Missouri Highway Patrol].

The same Congressman is planning to introduce legislation to modify the Alert system to include those things that grow in the womb and which sometimes get stolen by crazy ladies.

Comments

I've never read Liberal Larry before...almost got me! Being an 8-month fetus myself, in fact the victim of a partial-birth abortion (induced labor because my mother was ill) I found the first part of his post highly unsettling. So after I finish this comment I'm off to go find my sense of humor, which seems to have hied off to the hinterlands in the last couple of weeks. Tasty brains, anyone? **sigh** Maybe it's the impending visit with the 'rents and my agonized memories of fetus-hood that's doing it...the holidays always bring lots of latent (and distracting) anxiety to the surface.

As far as the other article...I suspect that Congressman will probably have a hard time getting that legislation off the ground if for no other reason than NOW and the pro-choice crowd will say it's the beginning of the slippery slope to no abortion "rights" at all. If a FETUS from a murdered mother can be declared a "human" child, then a fetus about to undergo a partial birth abortion can be declared human, too. No, this will be fought tooth and nail.

I thought the criteria was once it was out of the womb, it's born. And if it can sustain life on it 's own, it's a baby.
Either way, the whole story is horrible, I don't know how anyone can do that to another human, but hey...there are a lot of things that go on which I don't understand.
And why the law would need to be changed is beyond me....for god's sakes use some friggin' common sense for a change. It would be refreshing.

Cyd- if once it's out of womb, it's born; and once it's born, it's a baby, then why do all the newspapers keep referring to it as a fetus?

Amy- I don't have to worry about the 'rents this year: my mom hasn't spoken to me since I brought home Lilly.

Now there's an idea...do you rent Miss Lilly?

Heh

I think my impending holiday trip is why I can't sleep.
