You Might Be A Liberal If

Some of my faves culled from roanoke.com via F.R.:

You think that protestors outside nuclear power plants are dedicated activists, but protestors outside abortion clinics are dangerous zealots interfering with a legal activity.

You believe that even though the top 20 percent of taxpayers pay 80 percent of income taxes, that the rich are not paying their “fair share.”

You believe in global warming today just as firmly as you believed in global cooling back in the 1970s.

You mentally subtract 100 points from someone’s IQ if the person speaks with a Southern accent.

You are dedicated to helping the poor, the downtrodden and the less fortunate, but you have never given blood.

You have no problem with Hollywood movie stars flying around in private jets to give speeches on the evils of SUVs.

You deplore prejudice and bigotry in all its forms, but think that everyone in the “red states” is an idiot.

You are worried about how the French view Americans.

You believe that nativity scenes should be banned from public view, but that anyone objecting to pornography “only has to look the other way.”

I'll add one to the list:

From your Manhattan apartment, you root for hurricanes to kill Americans, but criticize President Bush for not showing empathy enough to suit you toward tsunami victims in Asia.

You nailed that one, dear lady! Thanks for your blog. BTW, I'm an old, ancient ABB addict from way back, just before the Sky Dog had to leave us.

Keep up the good work... and Eat a Peach for freedom!

You don't think the media has a liberal bias. BONUS points if you thing it has a conservative bias because it's run by right-wing corporate executives.

You think opposing abortion and supporting the death penalty is hypocritical, but supporting abortion and opposing the death penalty is not.

Posted by: Jason at December 31, 2004 12:31 PM

I'd alter one of 'em slightly:
You deplore prejudice and bigotry in all its forms, and assume that every single person in the Red States embodies those attitudes.

Posted by: Nathan at December 31, 2004 01:05 PM

You love to smoke pot but actively hound cigarette smokers.

You shout down and threaten people because they're such intolerant bigots/racists/etc.

You get violent at peace rallies.

You consider one ethnic group slaughtering another ethnic group to be none your business as long as the U. S. isn't involved. However, you use the term "genocide" to refer Republican's not funding a school-lunch program.

1. you support the troops, but not what they do.2. you think no republican voted for the equal rights amendment.
3. you think Richard Nixon started the VietNam war.
4. you think making guns unavailable for purchase will keep the guns out of the hands of criminals.
5. You never heard that Robert Byrd was a KKK member.(and if he was, it's okay, because he is a democrat).
6. you think that WW3 was averted by bombing Yugoslavia.
7. you think 9/11 was "our fault".
8. you think you were developed from a monkey into a human over millions of years.
9. you think there are spirits of people to talk to even though you were a monkey a million years ago.
10. you don't know that "Greenland" was once green and not due to SUV's.

Somewhere in the list should be a commentary about being a vegan but wearing leather...hmmm....

Posted by: Carol at December 31, 2004 05:20 PM

Alot of these should be titled "You may be an idiot if" not "You may be a liberal if". Why slander people with other views? It's malicious and pointless.

Posted by: mike at December 31, 2004 06:07 PM

Good point, Mike. "You might be a liberal if..." and "You might be an idiot if..." often do mean pretty much the same thing.

You show your support for Che Guevara by making a t-shirt manufacturer wealthier..

There are some good ones here.
There should be one about not eating genetically altered food, but turning your body into the Love Canal with drugs.

Hey, oej: Wail on!

Judging from most of the posts here I do believe you can knock off at least 100 pts. from your collective IQ. Taking the comments of a few people on the far left and making them synonymous with the beliefs of all democrats and liberals is well ...idiotic!

I'm sure you having fun, but let's take the views of the far right and make them yours.

Let's see a southern Baptist church put out a news letter saying that the tsunami was God's revenge against the gay loving Swedes maybe there was a gay swede in the WTC.

Tim McVeigh and you guys must hate america, i bet your all ploting to Rent fertilizer trucks and blow up daycare centers.

Do you see how ridiculous this is getting? Guess what you have a neighbors who are liberal and thier children go to school with your kids, and they play together and they get along just fine.

Get off the computer and play with your kids and teach them to get along with other people.

I don't accept Hollywood as my role model just as you shouldn't take Jerry "bomb them all in the name of Jesus" Falwell as yours.

Aw look, a really stupid "liberal" commented just to illustrate the truth of your post. That's so sweet -- it's like a late Christmas present.

Note to "toc001": calling people "stupid" and saying things like "Tim McVeigh and you guys must hate america, i bet your all ploting to Rent fertilizer trucks and blow up daycare centers" isn't exactly going to make us think better of you. It just kind of makes us think you're just a little bit of a pinhead.

Get your facts straight. Westboro is NOT a Southern Baptist church.
I'm hardly making these beliefs synonomous with the beliefs of all Democrats as I am a Democrat. Hey, remember that large chunk of the country that the Democrats used to call "The Solid South"? Tee!

C..c..can't we all get along?

Give me a break. It's humor. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it.

Posted by: Donnah at January 1, 2005 02:08 PM

Toc001, you're not as smart as you think you sound. These people were talking about the rule, and you were talking about the exception.

If you could even call it that.

Go hit your peace pipe and don't bother us until you can promise to behave, sweetheart.

Posted by: ArklahomBoy at January 1, 2005 02:15 PM

I am a Democrat because my father and Grandfather were. My Grandfather worked in the CCC during the Depression and at the Bethlehem Steel until it killed him at the age of 55. My father served in the army in the sixties before Vietnam and my family is Catholic and Democrat.

I don't smoke a peace pipe, Arklahomo-Boy and the examples you mention are not the rules, they are the exceptions, in the Church I belong to where my children attend school.

Donnah, I stand corrected on the Baptist Church that praised the death of Swedes in the disaster, wherever they are from, my guess is that you don't condone it.

Andrea, I said these things to make a comparison if you read carefully. Look at the comments previous from Mike and Vanhelsing "Good point, Mike. "You might be a liberal if..." and "You might be an idiot if..." often do mean pretty much the same thing."

And Gary is off on every point.

You might be a liberal if you have no sense of humor.
You might be a liberal if you search the web for people who DON'T share your ideas & take time to tell them how "idiotic" that makes them.
You might be a liberal if you claim everything you do is "for the children" but make exceptions for abortion & NAMBLA.
You might be a liberal if you preach the value of the First Ammendment & free speech - unless it is Right Wing Radio & then you vow that it is "hate speech"
You might be liberal if you have never bothered to actually READ the Constitution.

Posted by: doc at January 1, 2005 03:44 PM

Doc,
1. I want to see what people are saying even if they don't agree with me, maybe they have some legitimate ideas, maybe I'm wrong in some of my beliefs.

2. I don't support Nambla and think thier member should be in jail. I don't support abortion, but i'm not prepared to put doctors in Jail or the women who are accessory to the Crime by asking for the abortion. So far no one on the right has given me any legitimate answers on the penalty phase of an anti abortion law.

3. I believe right wing talk radio has every right to broadcast, but should be accountable for slander when appropriate, same with the left wing.

4. I have read the Constitution and the declaration. It jsut so happens that we have a Supreme Court who reviews it constantly, if your interpretation of the Constitution was considered the end all and be all then we wouldn't need them would we?

Posted by: toc001 at January 1, 2005 03:56 PM

One more thing Doc to show you I have a sense of humor, I Have a joke for you. It's not even political.

A young man was traveling on a bus across country sitting next to an old lady. The lady is sleeping and after about a hundred miles or so the woman stirs. She says to the young man "Ooh boy I think my rear end fell asleep" he says" I know I heard it snore!"

P.S. I do have alot of Republican friends.

No hard feelings y'all

"I am a Democrat because my father and Grandfather were."
Doesn't the Left teach evolution as a fact? Why would you not have changed parties? The Democratic Party certainly changed.
Following your logic, shouldn't I be a member of the Whig party like my ancestors?
"My father served in the army in the sixties before Vietnam..."
God bless your father. He sounds like a good man. I can't help but wonder if he is proud of you for voting Kerry.
"... my family is Catholic and Democrat."
Wow, you really are a Liberal huh? "It's my parents fault....WAH!"
Tell me how one can vote democrat when the Catholic Church is a favorite target of the Left? The left hates the Church's stand on what the Holy Father calls, "the seamless thread of life" - i.e. - anti-abortion, anti-"mercy killing" of the sick & old. The Church's stance of homosexual unions has certainly not gone without comment from the Left. For all of the good work done by Catholic Charities in this country & around the world, the Left still wants them removed from any kind of funding that maybe supported even indirectly by tax dollars... yet my taxes should go to the UN & Planned Parenthood.
It would seem that despite your great admonishment for us to, "Get off the computer and play with your kids and teach them to get along with other people," you have a plethora of contradictions you need to work on before you attempt to teach children anything.

Posted by: doc at January 1, 2005 04:08 PM

"P.S. I do have alot of Republican friends."
You actually are a Liberal..... "you know a lot of my friends are (insert group here)."
The dead giveaway is how the last 2 pieces of my post you just assumed had to be directed towards you. Is it any wonder that Bill Clinton, the textbook definition of a Narcissistic personality disorer, became the poster child for the Left?
Toc001 - let me help you here:

1. It's not all about you. Never has been, never will be & the sooner you embrace that, the happier you will be in this life.
2. There is a chance that you are just not as smart as you think that you are. I know that a typical liberal arts education at a publicly funded institution of higher learning may not have prepared you for this event. But, you have to look at this as a possibility. Before you internalize this, as is clearly your want, read it again. I am not claiming to be more intellectually gifted than you. Rather, I am posing the hypothetical possibility that you just might not be as swift as you think that you are when you smugly post on board that is clearly NOT in line with your political ideology.
3. The LSU game is back from Half-Time. While I celebrate spirited intellectual discourse, it falls short of SEC football. Geaux Tigers!

Posted by: doc at January 1, 2005 04:26 PM

1. you STILL might be a liberal if you think that the President had anything to do with a Ca. football team not being in the Rose Bowl game.
2. and you really are a liberal if you think all conservatives are hate-filled Baptists, evangelicals.
3. and you really are a liberal if you turn off the tv on Sunday mornings because there are no r-rated movies to watch.

Posted by: gary at January 1, 2005 04:28 PM

"I don't smoke a peace pipe, Arklahomo-Boy..."

Leave it to a gentle little liberal like yourself to be hurling homophobic remarks like that...

"...and the examples you mention are not the rules, they are the exceptions, in the Church I belong to where my children attend school."

I just read up, and I can't find any place where I offered "examples" for anything...maybe you're talking about the examples that you gave? You know, where you "Catholic and Democrat" family go to school at a Southern Baptist Church. Or whatever the hell you're trying to say.

"I am a Democrat because my father and Grandfather were."

Would you jump off a bri...oh, nevermind.
