What's Duane up to? Let's go in with the slidecam.

Best pic ever of a little bottle and a whole lot of genius.
Wail on, Skydog!
Corriciden bottle. SP?

Posted by: Donnah at June 1, 2005 06:48 PMCorrect me if I'm wrong, but the pics seem to be video stills from the "Statesboro Blues'' video, although they are obviously shots from the Love Valley Festival. There is, sadly, very little video footage of the guy.
Posted by: YO at June 1, 2005 07:01 PMIf it's not the tie-dyed t-shirt video, then it must be Love Valley.
Some people identify Duane's timeframes by his guitars, I do it by his shirts.
You're right, the tie-dyed shirt video is from the Fillmore East from a September, 1970 show. I was hoping you knew of any other video sources of Duane, I guess there aren't any.
Posted by: YO at June 1, 2005 09:45 PMAll anybody knows of is just the two. A shame.
Posted by: Donnah at June 1, 2005 09:50 PMJust to let you know how much I appreciate your Weds.
Duane pix, which I've been collecting for a 1/2 year or so...I saw him live twice in '71 & it was a life & ear -changing experience. The saddest day I remember was getting the Rolling Stone with the Grover Lewis article & his "official" obit... I was a freshman @ the U of Minn, & I'll always remember sitting in the sun among the autumn leaves with a sinking feeling. Ya see, up 'til then it was only an item on the FM "underground" station, which I refused to believe; now, in print, I could live in denial no longer. Hendrix & Joplin's passing were sad (& stupid), but Duane's was a TRAGEDY which was to me devastating.
A novice guitar player, I've tried every slide imaginable
in the ensuing decades trying to copy his sound which he made look so easy. Forget it ... only Duane had the "touch" & the genius.
I have a poor (CD) copy of the performance I saw that night, & while the music is monophonic, I relish Duane's between song banter & comments.
I do appreciate Derek Trucks; he seems to be Duane's technique reincarnate, but NO ONE could match the man's wit & charisma .... Again, thanks for the memories,
an "Old Guy" in Minneapolis
P.S. Rolling Stone did somewhat redeem itself in my eyes when they gave Duane his due & listed him as #2 in the top 100 greatest guitarists; I'd have made him #1 & not taken 30 years to do so...
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Dennis, and for sharing your memories.
I can tell by my site traffic that there are a whole bunch of Duane fans that show up here on Wednesdays.
I too remember when I heard about Duane's death. I was getting ready for school one morning in the fifth grade when I heard it on radio from WMYR news. This would have been the morning after.
No doubt about the special touch. It perked my ears right up as a little kid and made me a fan for life.
I should add that while I first came to your site via Google for Duane pix, I've stayed for appreciation of your commentary ... Our political views are parallel.
Of course, I've changed 180 degrees since 1971; but what can you expect from one growing up in Minnesota, (Humphrey-land, San Francisco-on-the- prairie) where DFL liberalism is your birthright?
Anyways, love your site & keep up the great work...
Thanks, Dennis. The Wednesday Duane pic is the best part of blogging.
