While it's a pleasure to read that a local girl was chosen as a Presidential Scholar, an honor only 141 students earn each year, clicking the article's thumbnail photo brought to mind the Dolly Parton quote "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap."
UPDATE:
There's nothing to be seen here but bad art. Move along with you.
I don't get it, she's wearing a pink izod shirt. It's a little tight, I guess. I can't even tell what's "cheap" these days. She's not showing her stomach, so she might as well be a nun.
Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 2, 2005 06:07 PMGeorge Will e-mailed me and said this post brightened his day. He loves a big unexpected jolt of "Painter of Light" with his morning java.
The painting is both expensive and incredibly tacky. Dolly leapt to mind.
Oh, the painting!
I kind of like it. Great use of color. Lots of energy.
Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 2, 2005 07:06 PMAnd I suppose this one has a certain je ne sais quoi...
Posted by: Donnah at July 2, 2005 08:15 PMWhat's wrong with dogs playing poker? You know, that one titled "His Stop" is very thought-provoking.
Posted by: Scott Chaffin at July 2, 2005 08:19 PMI've spent the last hour looking for a free copy of a certain Confederate Railroad song just for Bill, but was unsuccessful.
You got a link to what you're referring to, Scott? I want my thoughts provoked too. Nothing wrong with dogs playing poker, as long as nobody gets in too deep.
Now look at the face of this velvet monkey playing poker: the pathos!
Posted by: Donnah at July 2, 2005 08:32 PMI'd almost put that dogs playing pool painting up in my home. While I'd fear the cliche of "hey look at me, I'm being ironic by putting this cheesy thing up in my house," I actually kind of like it as well. It makes an impact on me particularly the nervous anticipation in the eyes of the collie-mix. If the dogs were a bit more surreal but employed the same symmetry and use of color, it'd be awesome.
Besides, who are you to judge? I'd lay good dinero that you've got a velvet painting of Greg Allman, Hank Williams and Ronnie van Zant as the holy trinity in the living "room" of your S. Florida swamp shack.
Snob.
Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 2, 2005 08:40 PMDuane, Duane, Duane not Gregg!
And it's a gilt-framed oil painting of Duane, Hank, and Ronnie in heaven. So there.
Duane, Gregg - same difference.
Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 2, 2005 09:58 PMArgh splutter
Posted by: Donnah at July 2, 2005 10:08 PMI can't find "His Stop". Here's a great dog/poker sample, though.
Posted by: Scott Chaffin at July 2, 2005 10:30 PMWow, that brown dog in the right foreground is looking pretty intense. That painting is fraught with tension.
