Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

Duane may not have been the shy, retiring type.
Wail on, Skydog!

Ha. Appears to be in Macon, just outside the Redwal offices (as they were probably still called then)on Cotton Avenue - City Hall in the far background.

Well, OK, but what's the latitude and longitude? Tee!
Too cool you know the spot.

LOVE the pic!

And thanks, Juan. I was wondering where he was.

I was going to say Macon but wasn't sure. With the big building in the background that's got to be right.

First thought I had seeing that pose was "Herman's Hermits", but I'm not 100% sure that's it. Anyone remember a 1960's group that did an early made for early tv version of a kind of "Om Pah, Loom Pah meets Devo" kind of robotic dance done to a very candy-*ssed tune? Maybe it was just the Monkees, but the memory I have is of an english group who may have pioneered bubblegum music [pre-disco to you youngters]...

Also note the Ma Bell sign- - How I miss her [anyone here old enough to remember party lines, bakelite(which was not at all light) telphones with real dials, or free 411 service (and free long distance info too!)????]

Wyandotte-5982 was my phone number. Not only were there party lines, but you could recognize voices.

411 free? Hell, I remember when they changed to 411 from 113. They had to change when they began using 1 as the first digit of direct dial long distance.

I'm old enough to remember when there was no 411, nor 911, nor 611, just "0" if you needed anything...I also remember Central Florida living before there were area codes, just those word prefixes, and yes, I well remember the BakeLite and even the metal phones with the big ol' dials. Technology changes so rapidly, that, it's no longer a case of being old so much as surviving enough decades to experience all the changes.

But I do remember having to hold the metal receiver in both my hands and the non-curly, cloth-covered phone chords, and those big old boxes on the wall...ha.

Oh, and, love the photo. Duane sure was a skinny guy.

Wyandotte? Kansas? I lived in Wandotte County Kansas in "68", same place?

Posted by: greg at July 29, 2005 08:27 AM

No, Wyandotte was an exchange and refers to the number "9" on the telephone dial. It was written on the spot where the 9 was on the dial.
"5" was the Edison exchange.

This guy was just the man, so f'n cool, just as a person, let alone the monster musician he was. Just the fact that more than thirty years after this happened, people are commenting on a picture he obviously is messing around in, where he might have been standing, where exactly he was, what city, etc. I sure wish he were here today. Even less selfish, I wish he would've been here in 75', or during ''Brothers and Sisters'', imagine how THAT album would've sounded with Duane!!!
