Here's Duane with the Hourglass gearing up to play the Whisky.
What are the odds that 'Word Salad' was a jangly-guitared psychedelic band?
Wail on, Skydog!
Amazing how much things changed over the next 3 years, and I'm not just talking about the brothers. Actually, you can see it in this photo: These guys are just beginning to morph from their page boy haircuts, but are still wearing the Edwardian clothes [don't they look just like the Monkees?]. A year later everyone's look was quite different. What happened? Woodstock? Led Zepplin? Chicago? Haight Ashbury? I don't know (or don't remember). The transition in American hip clothing and hair styles from 1965 to 1975 would make a good research topic for someone in graduate fashion shool...
Posted by: Carl at August 24, 2005 07:39 AMBTW, I just bought a remastered cd of Idlewild South to replace the one I lost a while back; it's still my # 2 favorite. Also, the guy at the record place had a "late show set at the Fillmore" single cd for 6.99. I bought it but haven't listened yet - none of the listed songs are not on the regular Fillmore album, so I may have been ripped off (unless what I bought is a bootleg in slick packaging ...).
Donnah/other gurus: Did the ABB play several shows at the Fillmore over several nights or just the one concert?
Posted by: Carl at August 24, 2005 07:53 AMThe background on that poster -- are those Duane's pants?
BTW, last weekend I finally broke down and bought the ABB Millenium Collection.
Posted by: Salt Lick at August 24, 2005 09:11 AMWell, I'm be damned, Salt. You got an eye.
I was too focused on that fire hydrant they're clustered around. Somebody thought posing around that would be a fine idea.
It's tough being a young band trying to make it into the bigs. You do lots of silly things- like wearing a shirt like Gregg's got on, for instance.
Carl, they played over several nights- March 11, 12, and 13 of '71. A couple of shows aday, I believe.
At the closing of the Fillmore, they also played over several nights. June 25, 26, and 27 of '71. All these are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Bill Graham was obviously very partial to them.
Posted by: Donnah at August 24, 2005 09:37 AMAhh, the Neru jacket and medallion look. I had (thankfully) forgotten about that.
Posted by: mike at August 24, 2005 11:29 AMWell, as to the "transition," I know from what Duane's been quoted as having said that he and the Band were pretty well "costumed up" in and by the L.A. music business, and Duane, particularly, hated it.
He returned to Florida and was quoted as saying he was very happy and relieved to leave it all behind and get back to what and where he found happiness...his music, anywhere but L.A. and that stupid expectation that they look the look of that time.
I'm glad, as I know a lot of other people are, that Duane had the sense to do what he did and not be allowed to become some talking monkey for a dollar. So many musicians and creative talent does allow it after getting to CA and that's where all the broken hearts come from. Along with broken lives, bad music and very bad clothes.
Posted by: -S- at August 24, 2005 11:46 AMRe Duane's fashion transition:
Don't forget the initial stage. In Daytona, Duane insisted the band dress nice. They wore suits and ties. Their hair was short, comments about the rad, rad, highschool hair notwithstanding. The photos show a clean-cut bunch.
Great thread Carl, and great comments all.
LOL@ Sue's "broken lives, bad music and very bad clothes."
