On A Brighter Note

A large group of blogs is running a charitable drive for hurricane Katrina relief. Go have a look and give as the spirit moves you.

I'll continue my animal relief matching fund until I've spent my discretionary jewelry money, or I come across a really good sale.

Hey Cracker -- While we've had no luck communicating with anyone via cell phone, land line, etc, my brother got very lucky yesterday and got through to me. My dad's home at Pass Christian is destroyed, but my brother's about 20 miles inland is OK. Dad evacuated his family, but drove back in to stay with my bro.

I'm supposed to call my brother back tomorrow afternoon and talk about going down there, but can't be sure we'll connect.

So let me ask you -- just in case I can't talk with my bro -- what did people find they needed most after those Florida hurricanes? I'm wondering what I should take. I figure a generator would help a lot -- bro said sleeping in the heat with no AC or even a fan was tough. Gasoline is a problem, but getting better.

So, what items did people find they needed the most after those Florida hurricanes?

It was ICE, Salt. My family was obsessed with ice. My brother hated anybody who had it when he didn't. He's a bit ornery. Also, a hibachi and some bags of charcoal would be good. My mom, dad, brother, sister, and their families were without power for 2 weeks.
Generators are big tickets items. Don't know what to tell you.
Ice, water, canned food and a way to heat it. Those are good things. With a hibachi you can fix yourself some coffee and heat up a can of food.

None of them were willing to drive their sorry behinds 3 hours away to my house where I had everything...

I'm glad your family's OK, Salt.

Donnah, a new quote from "Hurricane Katrina Refugee" (http://katrinarefugee.blogspot.com):

"Speaking of defending ourselves, my sister gave me and my husband a little gift this morning -- our own personal can of military strength tear gas. Wasn't that thoughtful of her?! We are one of the few families in Louisiana who don't own a gun (three small children in our house you know), so she got this for us to defend ourselves. I guess it's better than nothing. Our two silly dogs sure aren't going to defend us. I wonder if Sis would loan me her Rottweiler?"

Gee. So what's the plan? If the family gets attacked, stand around and whimper? Even my kind, reasonable Mr. Cracker is ready to kill a threat.

What am I thinking? That's one of reasons I married him.
