It sounded like the perfect rescue mission: no training, an entourage, a white flak vest, and a personal photographer. Sean Penn remains one of the most entertaining actors in Hollywood:

Sean Penn's Boat Sinks In Failed Katrina Rescue Attempt
New Orleans, Louisiana (AHN) - Political Activist and Actor Sean Penn made his way down to the city of New Orleans with a personal photographer and an entourage in an attempt to help victims stranded by floods caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Penn had planned to rescue children and adults in the flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
Penn who is known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup that eventually was not enough for the Academy Award winner.
When asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor tells the Herald Sun: "Whatever I can do to help."
The paper reports that one bystander taunted the actor saying, "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"
It's not like he has millions to support people trained in rescue.
He should have been able to empty that duck punt in seconds flat- I've seen him in "Mystic River", and he sucked more than a Briggs and Stratton bilge pump.
Seeing he had that cheesy LAPD-lite surplus body armour on, maybe he should have just stood gaaard; he could've got his buddy Tim Robbins to help out, in case Team America turned up.
Posted by: Paul at September 5, 2005 08:51 AMGet a load of that 8 ounce dixie cup he's using to bail with. And get a load of that 13 foot boat! What'd they do-- launch without checking the dad-gum drain plug? What a bunch of yahoos. And it looks to me like that rig is brand spanking new-- wouldn't surprise me a bit if this was his first ride in a jon boat, and that this particular jon boat has just been purchased by Sean for the photo op.
Where is Team America when you need'em?

Posted by: Cindy at September 5, 2005 12:25 PMLord have mercy...... Gee Sean, thanks for caring. Moron.
Posted by: mike at September 5, 2005 12:39 PMHey Sean, next time you might want to sit a little closer to the container of gasoline so you can throw yourself over it when the shooting starts. And don't worry, if someone does start shooting at you just jump out of the boat. That vest you are wearing will carry you straight to the bottom where all those nasty bullets can't reach you. After that, well, your just kind of making it up as you go anyway, so I'm sure you'll think of something.
The thing is, his ego is probably so big that this debacle isn't likely to even make a dent. He truly sees himself as a major player on the world stage.

Damn skippy; crack ain't cheap on the left coast...
Posted by: Jeff H at September 5, 2005 10:22 PMI've seen this around and about, even posted it. But you know, just now, looking and laughing at it all over again, I'm wondering how come he's the only one in a flak jacket? Did he not think the lives of his crew as important as his own?
Posted by: deputyheadmistress at September 6, 2005 05:14 AMI have to credit him for trying, but someone with the amount of monetary resources at his disposal could have done better. Now he is just another laff for the right wing, they find humour in it.
Posted by: cedric at September 6, 2005 03:05 PMIt's so pitifully obvious Sean Penn's intents. He could have given millions to trained rescue organizations. It for him was just another media spin.
Posted by: cedric at September 7, 2005 08:51 AMGlad you've come to understand that this thread is about Sean Penn, Cedric. Thanks.
Posted by: Donnah at September 7, 2005 09:24 AMI understand ..... I would have preferred you just remove my words than to just twist them. My personel feeling about Sean Pean ..he uses the "n" word to freely in so many of his movies for my taste. By the way why the name Florida -Cracker?
Posted by: CEDRIC at September 7, 2005 02:50 PMWhat's up with the flak jacket? Was he expecting pirates??
He probably had a gun too... what a dumbass
Posted by: SuperNature at September 7, 2005 04:34 PMI don't get why it's white. To be a more visible target?
Cedric, I'm a Florida Cracker, hence the name.
I like to enjoy myself here. The viciously political blogs of either stripe are over yonder.
who says he didnt give tons of money? is it not ok with you people that someone might want to be hands-on as well as financially supportive?
how much have you guys donated, whether by money or time?
Posted by: spencer at September 7, 2005 07:03 PMDo much "hands on" with your personal photographer, do ya?
I gave til it hurt. Then I went back and gave some more. You?
Posted by: Donnah at September 7, 2005 07:19 PMthats good of you... ive donated money, and im on the list to volunteer here in charlotte at the coliseum (about 1k evacuees here)...
so the personal photog's a bit much... he's hated by the right, so maybe he really wanted to help and at the same time regain some credibility?
Posted by: spencer at September 7, 2005 07:24 PMThat is cool about the volunteering. Tell me what it's like.
"Hated" is really too strong a word. Who likes a self-important celebrity with access to the media that you don't have, sticking their mug in a camera to tell you what's what? I sure don't. I'm going to laugh at them whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Posted by: Donnah at September 7, 2005 07:35 PMAww Sean, your camera man turned on ya. You may want to think about letting him go. He has made you the laughing stock of America! Even my 12 year old son is laughing!!
Posted by: Laura at September 7, 2005 07:52 PMto whomever noted penn's use of the "n" word in movies as a reason to dislike him: whats your address? id like to mail you a dictionary... look up the words "actor", "movie", and "fictional"...
Posted by: spencer at September 7, 2005 08:19 PMSpencer .... Maybe....but he has such a talent for the use of the "n" word and in so many movies I personally think he's a natural.
Posted by: cedric at September 8, 2005 07:44 AMHA HA HA! What a buffoon.
Posted by: FACE at September 8, 2005 09:40 PMRead this before you trash the guy. The link was given above, http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005410096,00.html
but the comments show that a lot of the people attacking the man never read it...

Last night Hollywood star Sean Penn joined the desperate search for hurricane survivors in New Orleans.
The frantic actor begged rescue crews to take him out to a house owned by pals near the 17th Street Canal. He had not heard from them since the area was flooded by up to 20ft of water.
Mystic River hunk Sean, 45, refused to name his friends, but said he could not bear watching rescues from his San Francisco home, knowing they could be dying.
He said: “I’m really worried. I need to go out and find them.”
Rescuers ferried him to the canal area.
They insisted he wear a bullet-proof vest — fearing he may be shot by local gangs who refuse to be evacuated.
Well, if Doug Brinkley says it, it must be true. After all, he's never been known to be anything less than scrupulously truthful in the past.
Let's see some some pics of those 40 drowning people Brinkley says he personally witnessed Penn rescue. There should be some - he did bring a photographer.

He has millions. He could have sent in boats filled with competent crew. He chose to grandstand.
Posted by: Donnah at September 9, 2005 01:26 AMSean Penn is one of my favorite present day camera whores, a relatively untalented pseudo-actor who got lucky with one film and now thinks he's God's gift to the world.
Unless he's billed with some really good actors, I will never see any of his future films.
Posted by: jim at September 9, 2005 09:26 AMMoron.
Posted by: SuperDaveOz at September 9, 2005 08:35 PMI couldn't but feel sorrow and disgust when I saw Penn's performance on TV. Yet, if it does any good, here in Spain all the actors and directors are just like that. Almodovar had a press conference to announce the right wing was about to take power by force.
Posted by: libertyvallance at September 10, 2005 06:39 AMI am from Marrero,La.(the westbank of New Orleans) I am under a mandatory evacuation for at least 1 month, if I could be there, I WOULD. Also I am personaly very grateful for your, along with everyone else's, efforts to help in New Orleans, home to many of my friends.
In addition I think you are a wonderful actor and a awesome human being for your efforts to aid my home town in this time of need.
Sincerely Thankful,
Jamie
I think sean was simply getting into character for the movie "New Orleans" a new catastrophe movie featuring sean as the biyou raised hero,(a.k.a. southern cracker) who of course will have to use the "n" word while he's trying to rescue a stubborn black person from the flood waters. Or maybe he will play the idiot president ,or the unqualified fema chief. Then of course there will be the romance interwoven. Maybe he could have a love scene with Oprah winfrey at the superdome...haha
Posted by: cedric from ct. at September 14, 2005 08:11 AMHah! Pretty good, Cedric.
