Paws For Relief

An anonymous benefactor has given the Humane Society of Greater Miami $20,000 for a matching fund to benefit HSUS emergency relief. They're about half-way through the money, so go help finish burning down this person's bank account.

Did you end up adopting Champion? Are you planning to post a picture of him?

Ahh. A misunderstanding. Champion was our first dog. He's been gone many years now. He was a rat terrier-looking dog and weighed about 25 pounds. I was telling Mr. Cracker what sized dog I was planning for us to get. I mean, last time I came home with a German Shepherd. I would never have gotten such a big dog if circumstances hadn't have been what they were. Who would have thought that with all that publicity Lilly got on TV and the newspaper, that people hadn't rushed in to adopt her? I know it was the leg that put them off.

We're going to look at the second batch of Katrinas this weekend. The first batch looked so healthy, and people were lined up for them.

Any of them would be good, hurricane or not. Actually, We've never gotten a dog from the Humane Society. We got our four from Animal Control. I really like the skinny, mangey ones. I get to be the fairy godmother!
Champion had mange like crazy! We didn't have computers back then. I figured it out from pictures in the encyclopedia. It took seven treatments to get him squared away.
He was a truly great dog, and taught me almost everything I know about dogs.
Shiloh, the other dog we have now- it was just luck we got her. Mr. Cracker had gone scouting at Animal Control and said there was a great little black dog there. When we went in, there were other people touring. We saw him, then did a tour ourselves. When we got back to the cage, another couple were getting him. We were happy somebody was. Anyways, once he was out of the cage, we could see there was another dog in there, hiding in the back corner. That was Shiloh.
Anyways, we have large and medium now, so we're going to add a smaller one.

What a great way to choose a dog.... I'm glad you had some time with Champion. I found my dog, Max, nearly four years ago. An animal rescue team had a table set up on the corner of 22nd and 8th, a block in NYC, in an area called Chelsea where I live. At the time my neighborhood was a place where primarily gay men lived. When I was coming home from work I saw a guy holding this cute sheepdog/terrier mix. He was torn. He wasn't sure whether he could afford his rent and the money it would take to care for a dog. Lucky for me he let me hold him. Then he decided Max should go to someone else. I couldn't put him down. It was a very cold January day and the anniversary of my mom's passing. I think I know what finally cinched the deal for me: Max was wearing a dress with a pearl-lined collar. Hence the neighborhood connection. :) Actually it was Max that did it for me. Good luck adopting your next critter.

Hey, Donnah...I'm late to this thread (been away for the week) but from what you write here, and what I saw earlier today on Yahoo's photos, there's a wonderful puppy available...not sure in which shelter, but...

Let me go find the link to the photo, this tiny puppy already learned to sit up, she's a doll.
