Fresh Hell

An animal Superdome. Great.

And get this man some Taco Bell.

UPDATE 9-18
Well, hallelujah. A major cutting of red tape. Writing to Governor Blanco and telling her to get off her butt and do something about this probably didn't help, but it did make me feel better.

The main obstacle preventing the movement of animals out of Louisiana is a state regulation requiring that pets owned by residents must be held in Louisiana for at least 30 days. But today, during a meeting between state and federal officials overseeing disaster animal services, Louisiana state veterinarian Maxwell Lea and assistant state veterinarian Martha Littlefield gave oral approval for Lamar-Dixon officials to start shipping out all appropriate animals—with the caveat that the animals be easily tracked down by owners.

The Rottie people I know in Houston have gone over numereous times to get dogs, and the breeders in southeast Texas are all fostering 2 to 4 at a time before moving them on north and west and taking in more.

My sister in law just had four come in, vetted 'em, chipped 'em and then the 3 males went on to another home while she kept the bitch.

It may not be a perfect system, but they are getting them out... As for the other breeds- and mixes-, I can only hope they are getting the same attention...

What a mess.

I know that the Austin GSD Rescue have made multiple trips over. BTW, they have a little three-legger over there, a non-Katrina, that I would love to have.
There are multiple browers open on things I'd like to post about, but I feel like the wind's been knocked out of my sails. I'm happy looking at the Broward County HS site, where they're going through available dog pics like mad. The ten-year-old golden retriever mix was barely up there half a day.

I was at the site yesterday, wondering if they'd had time to post any of the Katrina dogs... I hope the 100 just brought in go to new homes quickly.

The Rotties brought into Houston are being put up on Petfinder; apparently there's a lost/found database there.

They are. The BCHS said they're averaging 100 people a day, as opposed to their normal 15.
This is some great, happy news. The Arizona National Guard chose to bring their airplanes back full of pets for the Arizona Humane Society.
I'm sure people coming here are sick of dog-related posts. It's all preying on my mind, though. Mr. Cracker won't go with me to the Humane Society.
Well, we're off to Pets Mart. Today is bath day and Lilly needs special shampoo.
I took Shiloh to the vet yesterday and she had her "senior profile" done. We've had her on diet food since March and she still managed to gain 4 pounds. She's gained 10 pounds in two years. We've got to get the weight off or we're shortening her life.

Great news about adoptions!

Hug Lilly and Shiloh for me. :)

Nah, Donnah, at least this one reader isn't weary of the animal/pet issues, stories.

Like many people in far away areas, however, it's frustrating that there's not much that we can do individually...the donations don't ease the stories of the suffering. I was watching FOX yesterday, reporter touring on foot the newly drained neighborhoods, and out in front of him ran off camera (twice) this brown dog, completely emaciated, still there stranded after all this time.

If I had a plane, a truck even, I'd take off and scoop up as many as I could.
