Overwhelmed By Compliance

Texas has a few snags to work out with its evacuation plan. The good news is we're now in the natural cycle of increased hurricane activity, so everybody's going to get some good practice at getting it right. Except for those slackers in Nebraska.

Texans remain a class act:

Don and Barbara Rushe of The Woodlands give water to evacuees on Interstate 45 fleeing Hurricane Rita.

UPDATE
Well, this is hideous. God bless those poor people. The chartered bus fire might have had something to do with the passengers' oxygen tanks.

Don't forget to check out the Houston Chronicle's Rita blog, and Stormwatchers.

UPDATE II Down to a Cat 3. Good, good, good.

Do you think the race of the people involved (in the photo, that is) is significant? I don't. But I wonder if a racial angle about Rita is going to be ginned up in the MSM. I sure hope not.

My wife is from The Woodlands (home of the good-citizens in the above photo), and her parents still live there.

The Woodlands is one of the most exclusive and wealthy communities (actually a very large and growing city of its own) in the entire Houston area.

It's heartwarming to see some of their citizens helping out on the highway.

You're right about Texans generally being class acts---especially when it comes to helping thy neighbor.

Donna, the link to Stormwatchers isn't working just now.

It's a bit slow to connect, but it's working for me.

After seeing the tragedy of the bus on I-45, one does have to reconsider blaming the thinking of the owners of the nursing home in NOLA who chose not to evac their frail patients. Perhaps they were far more worried of such a similar horrific thing happening to them. Sadly after the levees broke, their patients drowned instead. If I wre the lawyer of the NOLA nursing home owners, I would make sure the jury saw this picture and ask, what would you have chosen to do.
