Well, well. Someone asked me if Duane Allman and Gram Parsons had ever meet. They did indeed. They both were playing at Bruce Botnick's house where Delaney and Bonnie recorded Motel Shot. The book Sing My Way Home quotes Bonnie:
Motel Shot highlights all the important genres of Gram Parson's Cosmic American Music concept--the blending of rock, gospel, hillbilly, country, blues, and soul. There are no electric instruments or drumkits. Handclaps and tambourines were the loudest percussion. Even Gram Parsons was on hand to bestow his blessing.Posted by floridacracker at November 4, 2005 11:13 PM"Motel Shot wasn't made in a studio. It was recorded in [producer/engineer] Bruce Botnick's big front room in Los Angeles. We really wanted to be 'in the house,' in the livingroom, not in some studio with baffles, none of that stuff. We wanted everything to be as live as if we were sitting around jamming. Everything was recorded from the time we opened the door, to the last note, on in one day."
Like the old days, Delaney and Bonnie put the word out. If you wanted to be part of Motel Shot, show up at Botnick's house by 6:45 p.m, no later than 7:00 p.m. After that the door would be closed and locked. It would be a one-day shot, a 'Motel Shot'.
The official line-up became Delaney and Bonnie, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Keltner, Gram Parsons, Dave Mason, Duane Allman, Iva Bramlett (Delaney's mother), Eddie James, Buddy Miles, Carl Radle, Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Jay York, Sandy Konikoff, John Hartford, Kenny Gradney, and Ben Benay.
"There were no drums, just a briefcase. Buddy Miles, by the way, played great briefcase even though he wasn't credited on the album. The big bass drum you hear? That was Joe Cocker banging on the side of the piano. All that percussion on 'Going Down The Road Feeling Bad' was me, Gram Parsons, and Duane Allman smacking our laps. As a matter of fact, Duane played briefcase, too. Briefcase, lap, and slide guitar."

Ha, love that.
Tomorrow is the day Gram Parsons was born into this old world, in Winter Haven, Florida. I'm still formulating writing about the event in my own site, but something's puzzling me, Donnah.
And that is, how you can so admirably cover Duane Allman's (among others') legacies and not get trolled for so-called endorsing and/or even supporting the notorious substances that eventually did some of them in (not Duane, let it be said again).
I so much as write about this element of history, and I get trolled to no end as to search terms and accusations. The significance is lost, unfortunately, to many that some people can still be held in high regard by some of the rest of us who are not dopers and otherwise dealing with dependencies. It's all about the music, the talent...lost to some on the internet.
My hat's off to you, is my point, because for me to write in honor of Gram Parsons and Duane Allman brought about some wretched low-down responses, suggesting I was enthusiastic about substance abuse...while that is about the farthest thing from the essence of who I am and why I honor them as could be many other things.
Anyway, my hat's off to you and here's in memory of these great musicians.
Posted by: -S- at November 5, 2005 01:26 AMI make it clear I think they were morons for the dope and the booze. Which is the reason I blog about Duane here and don't post much on the ABB site. I don't buy the messiah crap that Butch Trucks likes to dish. In his personal life Duane consistently behaved recklessly, and it killed him. Killed Gram too.
They ripped me off with their foolish early deaths.
When you think about it, I'm the victim here.
BTW, how come you get so many trolls? I only get nice people.
Posted by: Donnah at November 5, 2005 01:37 AMWell, I agree with you about the stupidity of the drugs and wanton recklessness of the lifestyles...unfortunately, I assume OTHER PEOPLE DO, TOO and then I write with seriousness about regard for their talent.
My mistake for not including disclaimers: their doping was the action of severe problems but their talents were from God so hooray for their talents, otherwise.
If and when anyone can explain why I am so fascinating and *attractive* to trolls, I'd love to hear it. I have not the faintest idea why they tell me their purient disdain for me, but they do.
Let's see...last one was some "public employee" in the state of Montana (who, I'm relatively sure, was not aware that his IPA was left along with his rotten words on my site), anyway, guy upon looking into him on the internet is a KOS website author who fancies himself a fundraiser for the DNC in Montana and then suggested my death on my website. I've now had three of those, people referring to my mortality.
I tell God in my prayers that my patience is only so extensive and that one prayer for their damned souls is enough. I say one, I then give them to God to deal with. But, as to the attraction, sometimes I think, the unspoken appeal is, they troll me, they get their names given up to God and perhaps, who knows, the mysterious works just may be the incentive they are not aware of.
That's the best I can do about it. About the worst, I could write more but they and people who write similar, are not worth it. Like I said, God has them. I get to delete the comments but save the IPAs for future reference...like police reports if they show up again.
Posted by: -S- at November 5, 2005 04:25 AMI have a group of good people, too, however.

I think, with blogging, and as to these issues of behaviors that cross certain lines, you have to actually t.y.p.e..i.t..o.u.t to avoid the wrongful assumptions that some (and "some" worldwide equates with millions of users) will always make. I tend to just get into my own strata of references and rely on readers understanding where I'm coming from otherwise and don't write to the lower common denominator and that seems to then provide room for the lower c.d. to assume (trollaccusationshere).
At least, I guess. From the amount of site stats that I review, I do see that there are some people who will try to connect Australia with Finland, regardless of how clearly you write that they are on the opposite sides of the globe, and that neither is in one's thoughts or references. It's just a case of some crazy people assuming I'm their target and they...well...they purge in my comments section and on other sites about what I write on mine.
