Alison Krauss is having a serious Lady Di moment on the CMA awards. Her and her band are singing and playing so beautifully, and her gown is completely transparent in the lights. Thin, white gauze probably isn't the best choice for dress material if you're going to be under klieg lights.
She looks pretty good as nekkid fiddlers go.
Most of the awards went to the wrong people, Elton John was there, and the show was in New York City. But forget all that and just look at Alison's dress.
Pics after the jump:

No, no nipple ring. This is a Country act, after all.
Here she is at the Grammys in a dress that combines the elements of sexiness and nonconfusingness crucial to a world-class fiddler:

UPDATE
A rather damning pic courtesy of BIRD. Looks like she knew what she was doing after all.

That was too funny! She must have not dressed for the dress rehearsal!!
Posted by: Becky at November 15, 2005 11:32 PMCall me among the well-seasoned, but I conclude Krause's handlers are very well aware of the visual affects, the dress, the lights and what is depicted there on stage. Specifically, take a look at the target of the lighting in the lower image...it's not accidental, happenstance nor unintentional. And Krause's inner lining reaches the essential areas, and thus, it's intentional show, uh, showwomanship.
I don't care for it -- nor this year's CMA makeover. Makes me wonder exactly what the point of CMA now is, because it sure doesn't seem to be about Country-Western. Some genres should be respected as genres and C-W is one of them.
I like Krause's music quite a bit. The fascination with stage presence seems to eventually run amok in the perceptions of many entertainers, unfortunately.
Posted by: -S- at November 16, 2005 04:32 AMWhat "S" said. Did that dress look as tacky live as it does in the photos? Because it looks like she shopped at the garage sale held by a woman that once rented a trailer from me.
I first saw Alison in an Appalachian high school auditorium about 15 years ago. Wonderfully talented, as is her band. Buy the PBS videos/DVDs of "Down from the Mountain" and "Down the Old Plank Road" just for her appearances.
Posted by: Salt Lick at November 16, 2005 08:07 AMWhile I think y'all are probably right, I have to say she showed herself to have poor judgement and be out of touch with the core audience. Hardly any of Country fans at CMT think it was anything more than a horrible accident, because no one would plan to go out there looking like that.
It was confusing and detracted from the enjoyment of her performance.
The split second I saw the dress without lights, I thought it looked beautiful. I second Donnah's comments -- I couldn't tell you a think about her performance except that her dress was see-thru.
Posted by: SAL at November 16, 2005 03:15 PMI wonder what people would be writing about if she'd have been wearing "bloomers" underneath?
I can't believe anyone would think that dress was a mishap, accidental, Donnah. I believe you that you say some peope think it was, but, come on, look.at.the.stage.photos. Krause HAD to have been shown the dress, tried the dress ON, looked at it in a mirror, walked around in it, been seen in it, been looked over IN it by handlers of many sorts, including the producer of the show (ahem!)...
It's intentional dressing. Krause has fallen victim to having listened to crazy costumers whispering nonsense in her ear.
Unfortunately, because she's a great musician.
Posted by: -S- at November 17, 2005 01:28 AMYou don't have to believe me, Suzie, click the link to the boards on CMT.
BTW, I've gotten thousands of hits from this dress dealy, so it is a topic of curiosity.
Remarkable.
I got thousands of hits from posting a link to the Looter Guy Gallery, so, I guess these incidents are now representational of just what most folks use the internet for.
Posted by: -S- at November 18, 2005 08:42 AMLOL. Your looter guy link was great, Suzie. I was in there forever.
Well, all I can say is that I saw Alison Krauss last night in Poughkeepsie, NY, and she DID NOT know that the dress was see-through. Her bandmates were relentless in teasing her about it. It was hysterical, and the banter between she and her band was great. Made for an even better than normal performance. She admitted that the lighting was put in the wrong place.
Posted by: Debby at November 20, 2005 10:00 PMYes! I knew that with talent shooting out of every hair on her head she wouldn't have to resort to cheap exhibitionalism to get attention.
She's no Shania.
I was at the Poughkeepsie concert last night also, and felt so badly for her! The guys in in the band were absolutely relentless (and hysterical). Their teasing about the dress even made her laugh during The Lucky One! I drove 4 hours from college to see her, and am going again when I'm home in FL for break! She and Union Station are the most unbelievable musicians I've ever seen!!
Posted by: Kate at November 21, 2005 01:17 AMI didn't get a chance to see the CMA Awards Show, but was very fortunate to attend AKUS's Poughkeepsie concert. Now I know what Alison was referring to when she joked she had gotten an earful from her mother. I just got a look at the dress. So what we long suspected about Alison is true -- she has two knees. By the way, the show in Poughkeepsie was fabulous, as I knew it would be. I had lost hope that AKUS would ever appear in their own concert in the New York area (I saw them at the Beacon Theater as part of the Great High Mountain Tour). They're special, no doubt about it.
Posted by: Jim Keane at November 21, 2005 09:01 AMLets not forget that there are a staff of people and a LIGHTING Director, LD, that are there to help set the stage lighting. This guy is suppose to change lighting that is looking bad. Where were they? If I were to light a performer like that I would be fired!
As soon as they saw what was happening they should have come up with a new look for the stage and made the performer look there best.
Well, remember that the song opened with NO live mic. She was singing into dead air. Both the sound crew and the lighting crew stunk. What a mess.
Posted by: Donnah at November 22, 2005 10:53 AMAnyone who has yet to see AKUS in concert has to see them. In my opinion there is no greater combination of talent. Alison has such an angelic voice that it brought tears to my eyes when "Living Prayer" was sung. I get chills whenever I hear her hit those notes. Dan has the best bluegrass voice. I cannot wait to see them again. The Poughkeepsie concert was the 3rd time in about 5 months that we saw them, and I have to say that the whole CMA incident with the dress made it even more entertaining. Yes, we're hooked. :)
Posted by: Debby at November 22, 2005 09:09 PMSomeone's got to tell me how the band was goofin' on her.
