Duane's wearing the two-button shirt that always pooched open. I like that shirt.
Wail on, Skydog!
Me too.
Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at January 4, 2006 02:02 PMJust finished reading "Midnight Riders". I was disappointed that there was no mention of Duane's sartorial spendor throughout the book. Do you have any idea as to how tall he was or how much he weighed? The poor boy looks like you'd have to stake him down in a light breeze or he'd blow away.
Posted by: Willard at January 5, 2006 10:36 PMNow this is a fascinating topic. In the Jim Shepley article that's here on the blog somewhere, he was talking about the young teenage Duane being a little guy. Ever since I read that I've been hunting around and comparing pics. I've never found out his exact height. He's taller than Dickie, who really is shrimpie, but shorter than Gregg.
In "Midnight Riders" it says that in their early bands, the high school ones, Duane always wanted everyone in the band to look sharp. They wore suits. Then with the Allman Joys you'll sometimes see matching costumes. With the Hour Glass it was psychodelia. He then went really sloppy with t-shirts. I can't stand that STP t-shirt. He said that in his band people come to pick and not to wear fancy duds. Thankfully he was enough a Southern boy to know that you can put on a shirt with snaps for evening wear and you'll look nice.
I was happy when he finally started getting a decent haircut (his hair was too fine to be worn long) and wearing some snaps.
He was skinny because of that dope he was killing himself with. I almost posted his skinniest pics this week, but used another instead. I'll post it next Wednesday. Whenever I look at it I want to give him a good smack.
It's amazing how such a scrawny little guy had such an overpowering personality, capable in inspiring so much respect in so many people.
Posted by: YO at January 6, 2006 01:28 AMHe was the combination of Alpha with astounding musical talent. The leader and the artist.
Here's the link to the Jim Shepley article if anyone wants to re-read it.
