Has Microsoft become a henchman of the Chinese government?
Microsoft is again facing a public relations backlash after a Chinese web blog hosted on its MSN Spaces service was allegedly shut down.
The MSN Spaces-hosted blog of Michael Anti, a Beijing-based researcher for the New York Times, was closed down after he had posted articles critical of a management purge at Beijing News.
Many people tend to believe the worst about Microsoft. The facts is, the company is going to make money wherever it goes, including in a theoretical China where democracy has flowered. So how would helping suppress speech in China benefit Microsoft? If these allegations are true, the deal inked with the Communists must be very good indeed.
