Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

duane guitar player.jpg

I'm always looking for a pic of the notorious leather jacket that is said to have a front panel that looks like a theater facade in, say Ponca City, Oklahoma. This doesn't look to be it.
While I've seen many black and white pics of this concert, this magazine cover is the only one I've seen in color.
The blue panel matches his blue shirt and looks very stylish.

Wail on, Skydog!

Trambo was kind enough to send the video of "Statesboro Blues" that cuts back and forth between the original and a later version of the Allman Brothers Band performing the song. It's very cool.
I've uploaded it and will leave it up for today.

UPDATE
Trambo has uploaded the videos for Statesboro; Dreams, Liz Reed, and Whipping Post from the Fillmore; and Love Valley for your viewing pleasure. Thank you kindly, Trambo.

Nice video. Although the ''current'' version of the brothers is also a distant memory if you think about it: Dickey got his ass booted out and Woody passed away.

Lalalala I can't hear you. Dickie will always be a part of the ABB. The only way out of that band is death.

I've rephrased the post, though.

Oh yeah, I also doubt the jacket he's wearing in this pic is the one mentioned by Lewis: Duane's playing slide on a Les Paul. From what I understand, he exclusively used the SG (given to him by Dickey Betts) for the slide songs (open E tuning) and the Les Paul for the standard tuning songs during the last part of his life. Then again, he could be playing the slide part to ''Dreams'' or ''Mountain Jam''. Is there a date on this photo, Donnah?

Posted by: YO at January 25, 2006 03:00 AM

No, there's not. But he's had a haircut, so it's 1971. ;)

Posted by: Donnah at January 25, 2006 03:05 AM

Thanks,I throughly enjoyed that...

Thanks for the video, Donnah & Trambo. Based on the 12th fret slide position in the photo (likely key of E), I'd guess Mountain Jam or maybe Every Hungry Woman..

Thanks, Donnah and Trambo
for this tasty tidbit of Allman joy.

Thanks are good. Visiting my fine sponsors is also good.

Is that copy of 'GUITAR' still available?

Posted by: Willard Wilson at January 25, 2006 04:10 PM

Thanks Donnah, very nice. And I like that photo too (despite the cheesy jacket) because of the open mouth (one of his playing idiosyncracies that really sticks in my mind).

Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at January 25, 2006 04:53 PM

Carl, that open mouth thang is common to a lot of pickers. My wife told me once that she can tell when the stage is level, because I'm drooling out of both sides of my mouth. :-)

Posted by: mike at January 25, 2006 06:55 PM

He wasn't like, y'ur typical mouth-breather. He would open his mouth intentionally and dynamically, and to my 1970-71 sensibilities it looked awfully like he was trying to sing along with those off-the-scale notes that his guitar suggested but that no human ear could really hear. Wail on, indeed.

Hey Donnah: I 've got to save that for my 16 year old-- How???

Posted by: carl in Atlanta at January 25, 2006 07:45 PM

I'm on Firefox and I had a hell of a time. The IE tricks don't work for me, and that Quicktime won't let you save.
Try right-clicking the link. In the "open with", I typed in "wmplayer.exe"

Once I had it playing in Windows, I clicked the "add to library" on the bottom left of the screen.

Willard, that October 1981 issue sometimes comes up on Ebay for about $20. The article itself is published in a book, and also is on the internet.

Posted by: Donnah at January 25, 2006 08:22 PM

Donnah,

I found 5 more clips of the original ABB. Quality is not the best, but not terrible either.
3 of the clips are from the Fillmore
2 are from Love Valley

If you haven't seen them and if anyone wants them, I'll put them on my server and y'all can have at it.

Posted by: Trambo at January 25, 2006 09:35 PM

Donnah, Thank you so much for the weekly pleasure of seeing Duane Allman. I always look forward to it, and this week's video is a real pleasure. Sadly, those boys sometimes don't seem real anymore and this sort of brings them back.

Trambo, you want to add a link to the current vid as well? I'll post an update for all of them.

Thank you, Trambo!

Ah have but one thing to say: "Thanks for the memories!"

Thanks bunches, my memories are refreshed once again and this time they'll hang around because I have the videos!

Kudo's to Trambo and Donnah! :P

Posted by: Gmac at January 26, 2006 06:35 PM

Gmac, yes it does bring back some great memories. Duane was such an excellent picker, and not just a great slide player. He was the ultimate musician. The whole band was ahead of their time. Yet, they just kept getting better with age. However, I'm still partial to the original ABB.

I'll poke around on my drives and see what else I can find. If I find anything worth sharing, I'll let you know, and serve it up.

And thank you Donnah, for being the gracious hostess. :)

Four days later and I'm still back in 1971....

Sunday, 1/29

Are these commercially available?

Posted by: carl in Atlanta at January 29, 2006 08:43 AM

Thanks to Donnah and Trambo, I was able to share with my 15 year old son my "Duane" experience...I was 15 in 1970 when I first saw Duane perform...like all you fine folks, I love Skydog!

Posted by: Jack at January 29, 2006 11:10 AM

I don't think so, Carl.

Jack, details, please. Where, when, and everything else.

Posted by: Donnah at January 29, 2006 05:41 PM

The first time was late 1970 at the Spectrum in Philly. Electric Factory put together the concert with: Wet Willie, Red Bone, The Allman Brothers Band and The Johnny Winters Band.

The Spectrum is an ice hockey arena, not a good music venue. The stage was set up at one end of the arena with the middle of the arena curtained off. I managed to find a perch above and just behind the stage right in between Butch Trucks and Johanny Johanson. I was hooked!
