Will Work For Food

The impoverished Hollywood firefighters are back in the news. In the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma a uniformed, on-duty group of them went to a site distributing emergency food stamps, walked to the front of the line, and got themselves some charity on toast.

Their actions perturbed a lot of people, and local civic groups aren't going to let it go. According to the Sun-Sentinel, the lowest-paid firefighter involved, Anthony Cioppa, is pulling down $70,000; the highest, Captain Raymond Powers, $100,000. Driver-Engineer William Gutierrez earns $77,000. These figures don't include overtime.

To his credit, Anthony Cioppa now says he's embarrassed and has offered an apology to the community.

A little less brazen next time, guys.

Oh... EVERYone stood in line for those. I'm just too lazy to do it, but I heard a car salesman talking about how his wife took in almost 1,000 in food stamps, and they both had very good jobs...

The powers that be didn't set a cap on income, did they? [If so I never heard about it] Just a "come on down and get it".

I remember thinking.. Were would we use the things? They are for emergency use but most of the grocery stores have nothing left in them, and fresh food is at least 100 miles away...

The firefighters are being singled out because they wore uniforms. JMO.

First what Pam says below is not true. The maximum benefit was $509 not a thousand.

These benefits had no limit. No one lost out.

Yesterday I blogged about this very same news story in a Post titled 'What's the fuss'. I said-

"If these firemen qualified, they get the benefits like anyone else. End of story. There was no limit on the amount of food stamps paid out. Mr. Vollman and the other complaining activists need a life."

I've blogged a half dozen times on this food stamp story and how people waited a month or more to get them when it was supposed to be 10 days. I scooped the local MSM by days, or in the case of the Sun-Sentinel by weeks. The Palm Beach Post never bothered to cover this story and I tipped them to it!

Food Stamps? That'll get me going! Being aware of the widespread misuse of this service; I attempted to get them, just to see what it was all about.
I approached this totally honest,(frankly not the way to do business with the government, any government), and with full disclosure.
Folks, my utter, total income is less than $600.oo a month. That is my total Social Security benefit, at age 62, now 65. My utter, total material inventory is less than $5,000.oo, (my car included).
The State of Florida digested my information and decided that I truly did qualify for food stamps. Yep! They found that I need $10.oo a month in food stamps. 10 damned bucks a month! Any one question why I see the "users", especially less than 24 hours after Wilma, getting food, food stamps, etc. Especially those firemen, any government employee, any person who is working; to you I say: "Y'all are nothin' more than cheap thieves!" And you want my donation to your funds? How much of "Jerry's Kids" money do y'all skim?

Bill Said ""These benefits had no limit. No one lost out.""

EXCUSE ME!!!!
Mrs. TAX Payer over here!!!
I think I lost out paying taxes for a free "Gravey Train"!!

Or don't I count?

That's how I feel about it too, Cindy. It's not free money raining from the sky - that's all from our taxes. No, I don't want to pay for a guy who makes a 100 Grand to have food stamps. I'm not that generous.

Of course the firemen got singled out because of their uniforms. Pretty ballsy to waltz up to the head of the line in uniform and on the clock, wouldn't you say?

Bill, you honestly think these guys qualified for this program? Come off it.

Frankie, these weren't regular foodstamps, these were emergency food stamps.

Dear Florida Cracker -

I would just like to share with you my feelings about you today. They are sad and depressed like the other day, but only briefly confused, unlike the other day, when I was sad and depressed and confused all at once for a long time. I say briefly, because at first I thought you were all like "come off it" to me, but then I realized that you were saying "come off it" to the other person named Bill, and that you were not saying "come off it" to me at all. But that confusion gone, I am still sad and depressed, because you being so rude and saying "come off it" to that other person named Bill made me think of when you were rude to me on my blog, making me sad, depressed and confused. So that sadness and depression carried over from when you made me sad and depressed before, but not the confusion, as I realize that you were being rude to the other Bill in that case and not me. Thank you once again for giving me the forum to share my feelings about you and our relationship of mutual honesty and respect.

Yours in sadness and depression (from the other day), but not confusion,

Bill

Bill, get a switch off a tree and bring it to me.

**If these firemen qualified, they get the benefits like anyone else. End of story.**

I couldn't agree more. Unless these firemen had even a modicum of dignity or self-respect, in which case I'd say they should be ashamed of themselves. So far, it looks like at least one of began to experience that particular emotion once he was "outed". I wonder if he was munching on a government-subsidized bag of Cheetos when he got the news that people didn't appreciate him gaming the system.

Bravo, Captain Powers! Way to cover your ass!
