Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

Further adventure in footwear: motorcycle boots on a tiny stage.
Wail on, Skydog!

I think this one is from the same time period. How long did he favor his Goldtop?

Don't know how long he favored it, but it was a damn beautiful axe. Eventually, he got the Hotlanta Gibson Les Paul for straight guitar and Dickey's SG for slide. I know he got a guitar with Billy Gibbons, not sure if it was Hotlanta though.

Duane did use an SG, presumably Dickey's at times..but the Fillmore sets (all three nights) were
all played on his plainburst..cherry burst actually,
he did not acquire Hot Lanta (a 'flametop' in Tobaccoburst) until shortly after Fillmore.
So that dispells the 'Hot Lanta was his tried and true' ax...but he did love that guitar (HL) and used it almost solely from the time he acquired it.

As to the GT deal..it is a headache to figure out which one, where, yada yada
What is for certain is...Duane traded a GT for his
Cherryburst(Fillmore ax) in Daytona, but he swapped the pickups out, and some cash was involved...quoting Joe Dan Petty from Vintage Guitar mag interview
"Duane had a Goldtop he traded for a Sunburst. But
he liked the pickups in the Goldtop better, so he and
Kim Payne switched the pickups in a motel room in
Daytona. Dickey was playing an SG, then he got a
Les Paul in Detroit, but he never did warm to it, and
got another Les Paul. Dickey gave Duane his SG,
and Duane set it up for slide."

there are almost no pics or vid of DA playing the 'slide SG'

one interesting thing(amongst all this DA headache givin' trivia) is Duane used his 57 Goldtop ser#7 3312 on the Layla sessions, but part of the sessions were overdubbed later..so he used his
cherry burst..but it had the pickups out of the GT..

"Skydog later traded this Goldtop and some cash for the '58 Cherryburst after a gig on Sept. 16, 1970 in Daytona Beach, FL. The Cherryburst's owner was in the local band "Stone Balloon" that opened that night's gig. The Brother's infamous roadie, Red Dog, collected the Cherryburst after the gig and returned to Duane's hotel room where they swapped out the PAFs in the Goldtop with the PAFs in the Cherryburst. Red Dog then returned the Goldtop to its new owner, who wasn't told about the PAF swap!

Duane then used the Cherryburst almost exclusively until he acquired 'Hot 'Lanta' from Kurt Linoff in late June 1971, including the Layla overdubs laid down after 9/16/70. A little known fact...Duane used two different Les Pauls on the Layla sessions, but only one set of PAFs!"- anon

for those who dont know-PAF=patent applied for-
a sticker Gibson put on the back of pickups

sry for takin up so much space here, but I *think*
THAT Goldtop is one he happened to be playing, maybe Dickey's..reason ? the pup covers are gone,
and it is not his 57, by any stretch imho

for all intents and purposes, he abandoned the GT as
a 'player' in Daytona. and for the same reasons (tone) he abandoned *all* for Hot Lanta when he acquired it..

Also, to be reasonable for Yo's benefit, a friend of Billy Gibbon's helped Duane locate Hot Lanta, but I can't recall how that went down..

Wow, I'm so out of my depth in this thread I almost passed on my regular Wed Duane comment. Was it in Dumb and Dumber that knelt before the "real Alice Cooper" and salaamed. "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
How do you guys learn this stuff??

I like listening to gearheads talk. I don't understand half of it, but I sure do enjoy it.

Carl-that was Wayne's World.

Notice Duane has his pants tucked inside his boots in this one? That's a kind of different look for him. I'm thinking it's the same vest in both pics, but am not sure. He may have been a man of many vests.

Posted by: Donnah at March 29, 2006 05:03 PM

vests were cool, pants legs get caught in cycle chains..

this pic of the boys..is so so unreal, this had to be within a few weeks of Second Coming and Duane
and Berry merging..

Dickey dumped the 235, Berry dumped the Guild...
(probably on Duanes prodding)

That one link i posted (my fav) shows what Duane loved

Posted by: csason at March 29, 2006 06:00 PM

Ah, I forgot about the chains.
While they were dumping old gear, I wish they'd have dumped all their pairs of striped pants...

ya know Donnah, I think I just figured out
why I never made it to rock star...*huh*

Nice to see fellow fans of Skydog here in the blogosphere.

I was once at Kurt West's house about ten years back when he lived in Chicago. He was the ABB road manager for a while, ran their fan club. Don't know what he's up to these days. But he showed me this shirt of Duane's and I was rather surprised. He was a really skinny little guy. Never would have guessed.

Dean, he runs the Big House, I believe. It's now and museum and a foundation. He posts on the ABB board under the name 'Verbal.'
