Donnah, I swear you must have a HUGE secret stash
of Duane shots..is the 'big house' the Gamble Mansion, or how far away am I ?

After reliving the 'Monica view' from the other day, I couldn't look at this too long without thinking 'groupie view'.. damn buckle Berry is sporting had to tear a hole in the back of that
bass..

I don't think that's The Big House. I think that's the old mansion on College Street they used for photos on their first album. I don't recall any columns like that on The Big House, but it's been a long time, so I could be wrong.

At the time, many of the old mansions had fallen into disrepair - this one was vacant. Several years later it was purchased by a restaurant chain, and I believe it's still a restaurant today.

One of the things that Phil Walden did for Macon, and something that he got little recognition for, was purchasing and refurbishing a large number of the old houses in town. He is responsible for the revival of interest in Macon's history - something the Chamber of Commerce now promotes.

I've corrected the caption, Juan, and added the other pics for clarity and comparison.

There was a real nice front page obit on Phil Walden in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on 4/24. I was pleasantly surprised; not by this man's premature death at age 66,of course, but by the AJC's Southern-culture-friendly treatment of him and his career. As noted in passing in the Krispy Kreme story linked above, it is a tragic fact that like Florida south of the 29th parallel of latitude (roughly the Daytona-Ocala line, wouldn't you say, Donnah?) the South has lost Atlan-Ta*

*[Hyphen and capitalized "T" intented to show how the yankees [mis]pronounce the name]

It's Adlanna, Carl. Where're y'all from...MONTgummry? My sis teaches up there in Dunwoody somewhere, maybe I should call the witch
and see how thrilled she is at the chance to correct me...you reckon ?

It's "Lanna" in my universe. Owen, you might have you some Yankee in the woodpile what ruined your speech.

I forgot the reason for my re-post.

Somebody wanted a Duane Allman signature Les Paul so bad, they had one made special-

We'll see how high it goes, it boggles my mind, the contrast between something so far removed from Duane..as a copy of a copy of his guitar, bringing so much.

I guess his leather jacket went for around a thousand..hmm. I should have bought the damn thing
and just sent it to his daughter somehow ..it really bugs me that his clothes are being pawned off. pretty sick, really

You are both correct: it is improper to pronounce either "t" as such. In slow, formalized speech the first 't' is indeed pronounced "d", but only fleetingly and with the flat of the tongue placed well back on the palate. In conversational speech, of course, even that is dropped. Never, ever is there any emphasis any syllable.

wtf is happening with a doughnut hamburger? surely these are the end times. abomination!!!!

thank god people still know how to talk as opposed to "tahwlk". then again, sometimes(being the contrary sort that i am) i pronounce werds wrohngh to gig folks sensibilities.

and as for the geetars, 2 of the les pauls i've owned were cherry sunbursts and i named them both Howard. that's enough for me. good lord, why spend oodles of bucks to get a flamed top when the solid body guitar as designed by les paul(the infamous "log") was supposed to INHIBIT vibrations? (and really, i know i'm just being a picky asshole but he can "bare" to part with it? what the hell happened to a sixth grade education in this country? )

ewww at paying high high prices for a "geniune Gibson re-issue" of a 1959 model. that's like getting a new for 2004 '57 cadillac. is it just me or are these guitar players nuts? i went looking for a '70's tobacco sunburst and came away from my search with an '81 cherry sunburst les paul standard for 1400 bucks. this for a guitar that sold new with case for 250 bucks in the late 1950's.

not a pithy comment but then again, i'm not pithy, just pissy. :)

the funny part is, if Duane were alive and HE bought a R9, he would A)bolt washers on B)probably
stick Dimarzios in it C) swap the tuners etc. etc.

As far as I can tell from the auction pics, that guitar's headstock is unbroken. Not even close to authentic! I remember thinking, when I broke the headstock on mine years ago, that "maybe it'll sound more like Duane's now". It was the only positive thought I could muster at the time...

glad to hear from other pickers who aren't so precious about their tools. those grovers do look ugly, don't they? i keep hearing it's all int the peg windings and string stretching to keep one in tune. could have used that knowledge when we were kids wrapping them like B.B. King does.

Posted by: richard at April 26, 2006 03:32 PM

wrapping...?? I think i still do. Probably
why it won't stay in tune...

intentional breaking of the headstock..c'mon you gotta be kiddin' me...that's like elective surgery

are all those DA signatures post headstock-break/repair ???

Posted by: csason at April 26, 2006 06:35 PM

methinks he was joking, eh?

Posted by: richard at April 26, 2006 06:39 PM

That leather jacket in the eBay auction mentioned above was fairly well proven to be bogus.
