the warehouse polaroids are some of my favorites too.

you get to see what the skinny hellraiser looks like clearly and the les paul with the pickguard removed continues to be the essence of cool. whether a gold top or a sunburst, Duane knew the secrets.

there is a site called the Les Paul Forum for enthusiasts of this model guitar. they have lots of topics about duane and how he wrapped the strings through and over the tailpiece for sonic reasons.

hmm, i smell a blog post brewing.

Thanks a lot. These pix have given me something to look forward to on Wednesdays. Am continually amazed at these photos, as many I've not seen before, and I've been a pretty big fan of Duane since I was in eighth grade in '71.

Damn my home computer(or bloglines). I'll have to check back in for a peek over the weekend (from the office computer), but HAD to at least check in on the weekly FC/DA thread...

BTW, thanks for remembering Grady McWhiney(though I never "knew" him until he died).[ See Donnah's post from 6:51 pm today]

I'm very much afraid that our culture is finally fading away. As in all things human (and as applies to the yankees too),there are certainly a few things about the past that we can all be ashamed of, but so much more about us that was -- and still is -- so, so great. In many ways we personify this gol-durned country! I KNOW we have had the most fun! Yeee-Haaah!

I think Duane wrapped the tailpiece to save metal..I can remember not clipping my strings like he did (and the resultant onamenture at the headstock) to save metal also..metal meaning strings. In other words if you break a string and have no money, you can restring with what you got if youre careful. I am one of those fans that reckon he went from broke prodigy to firecracker peak and got killed. I guess i am saying its not unusual to see DA wearing the same clothes for many years..

btw, I am Csason at the LP forums, what is your nick over there, Richard ?

We do personify this country, Carl. Read James Webb's book.

Glad you like the pics, Bill.

The other guy looks suspiciously like my uncle Rex.

LOL. I guess there's only a few ways that an old dude can look.
