Duane wants to give you a hug.
Wail on, Skydog!
WHATTTT ?? no slide, no Les Paul..???
(nice shirt, tho) He looks pretty happy here.
ugh, need coffee
Donnah, Where do these pictures come from? They're unbelievable.
Posted by: Donald at May 17, 2006 06:50 AMDuane was by no means camera shy. For someone who was alive for such a brief time, there really are a ton of pics.
This one's from the Layla cover.
Hiya friends
I posted a desktop wallpaper picture I made (in three sizes,) as well as some of Duane's comments, over at
http://www.freepatriot.com/2006/05/duane-on-playing-music.php
Wail on,

No thanks, I can smell him from right where I'm sitting.
Posted by: Bill from INDC at May 17, 2006 11:15 AMnot a DA fan, huh Bill ?
nice montage, Scott..doesn't smell bad either.
Posted by: csason at May 17, 2006 04:42 PMDonnah,
Thought you might be interested in seeing this pic. The guy on the far right is Berry Oakley, This was when he was in the "Roemans" from Tarpon Springs, FL. The short guy is Bertie Higgins, (Drums), of "Key Largo" fame.

OH....the short guy second from the left
Posted by: mark at May 17, 2006 05:03 PMsmell him from here?
although the mercurial duane would not need me to stand up for him, i will point out that anyone who is a professional musician with a union card by age 18, dates chet atkins daughter and gets noticed by chet for his playing, makes TONS of sessions for atlantic records and starts his own band when atlantic sells his contract to phil walden most likely TOOK SHOWERS. :)
heh, indeed
Posted by: richard at May 17, 2006 06:31 PMspeaking of smell..I guess it should be mentioned
of Skydog, that at a time when a lot of players..ME included were not EVEN paying attention, he was busy 'laying hands' on the cream of the crop...guitar wise, just for that-even if he couldn't play, was astounding. So he probably smelled a lot like Les Pauls, and they have their own distinctive smell, nothing like it.
If you've ever been in a 41 Chevy original, or a 57 for that matter...you know what I mean.
Oh Scott..I mentioned the pic/desktop, but I forgot to say thanks.
Donnah- maybe you should just start a webpage called WednesdaysDuaneAllmanpic.com , I am sure it
would get eat up..bout as fast as a new Florida resident.
Hate to say it, but I knew, only too well, the smell that probably permeated every waking moment of Duane's brief life as an adult; let's just say it was not the scent of B.O. or it's odiferous kin.
When I access from this 1#x&**! teen-ridden home computer I might as well talk about smelling Duane 'cause I sure can't view Donnah's DA pics from here. Will be back in the office tomorrow, though, and will once again belatedly view (and smell)this week's posting(s) then..
Posted by: carl in Atlanta at May 17, 2006 08:43 PMcsason, I am very glad you liked it. :) I was thinking specifically of this group when I made it. :) My favorite pic in the montage is the one in the upper left.
Scott
Posted by: Scott Auld at May 17, 2006 11:03 PMThat pic in the upper left of the montage ... a lot of people don't know this (maybe most guitar players do) but if you put your ear on the upper bout or "shoulder" of the guitar, where Duane's ear is, you can hear the true tone of the guitar better than you can even through an amp. I am pretty sure that pic and the one right below it is from Duane tuning up at the Whiskey. I love the old strobotuner on the chair.
Posted by: Scott Auld at May 17, 2006 11:05 PMThere has never been, nor will there ever be another slide player like Duane Allman. Gregg made his mark vocally, but brother Duane was light years ahead of his time. I was blessed that I got to hear/see him 3X while he was living. There is nothing that could replace that experience. You would have to see it and hear it for yourself.
At Grant's Lounge, in Macon, it was normal for a few of the brothers to be there jamming late night, on any given night when they were home. And after a number, Duane would say to the crowd, "Y'all should have been here a while ago...we were really cooking."
RIP, Brother Duane. To the very best that there ever was or will be.
