Cockeyed Surgeons

What a terrible story about the British woman whose surgeon removed the wrong kidney. It's not only under British socialized medicine that those kinds of errors occur, though. My neighbor here in Florida developed gangrene in his right leg and went in to have it amputated. The surgeon messed up and cut off the left one. Of course, then they had to go back and amputate the right leg because it was still gangrenous.
To make matters worse, he couldn't even sue.

Why can't he sue?

I think Moses told this one to Joshua.

because he didn't have a leg to stand on.

Well, when I had both my knees operated on at different times, they made me mark the one due for surgery with a magic marker "x." Sort of shook my confidence in their competence for a second, but in retrospect I suppose that it's an elegant, low-tech solution.

All kidding aside, that's the best way to do it. It's one extra layer of error prevention. In the story about the lady in England, one of the points was that he'd never asked her what her situation was. He went entirely by the file, and not very well at that.

A propos of nothing but a vague link to the medical: I had a crown fall out and went to my dentist. He had no recollection of me (been going there for years), but when I put that crown in his hand, he got very excited and jabbered on and on about my tight bite and his making that crown. It was like listening to a composer talk about one of his melodies, but in a weird way.

you really DON'T wanna hear any weird medical stories from me. They are just too awful.

I have to say though, I am surprised their aren't
more incidents, considering the amount of procedures, etc. that are performed.

Personally I think you can already figure our system is socialized...most of the hospital's tally sheets are writtten off. It is assumed most public funded/serving medical institutions are gonna post a loss. In every one I have worked the indigent got the same treatment as the well funded, we did have a VIP room at one hospital..you don't see that very often.

Overheard in the OR...

Remember we want to remove the puffy, green and black leg that smells like an open sewer, not the pink, normal looking leg that smells like Bath & Bodyworks.

I hadn't thought about that Owen, but you're right. I guess that's why so many people go to the emergency room instead of making an appointment with a physician.
