At the end of 1987 I ran off to join the Army in order to get away from The Bangles. Alas, Susanna Hoffs' eyes followed me there and were always messing up my locker.

a lot of these songs seem to reek of saying goodbye
to an era.. and I'm not sying that because it happened, actually.
Even the titles seem to imply..
Don't dream its over
I had the time of my life
Didnt we almost have it all
I still havent found what I'm looking for
Posted by: csason at July 16, 2006 09:57 AMThanks for these posts. In particular, your first post in this series has given me reason anew to use YouTube.
Posted by: James at July 16, 2006 03:36 PMYou're welcome. And thanks for the thanks.
When I get done with the 80's, I plan to do compilations of earlier material. There won't be as near as much available, but it should be entertaining.
Posted by: Donnah at July 16, 2006 04:12 PMAs the 80's wore on, the music just continued getting worse.
Posted by: greg at July 17, 2006 09:35 AMI didn't think I had any favorites from this late in the 80s until my eyes struck "Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam." I really liked them - and still do. She could really sing and the guys constructed very good tracks. I'd almost think they could be popular today, except Lisa probably sings too well. Fergie eat your heart out.
As you look for earlier material, look particularly for a couple of songs by The Essex (I think that's spelled correctly) from about 1963-64. I remember seeing an old video by them in the early 80s and I was struck by how much they had anticipated the content of 80s music videos.
Posted by: Juan Paxety at July 17, 2006 12:40 PMI'll look for them, Juan.
Posted by: Donnah at July 17, 2006 02:08 PMThe song may have been "Easier Said Than Done" - that was one of their hits, but I don't remember if that was the video that I saw.
Posted by: Juan Paxety at July 17, 2006 02:55 PMI thought the name was familiar. Those were those Marines.
Posted by: Donnah at July 17, 2006 03:32 PMI can't imagine how much work this is, but I am really enjoying the links. Thanks!
Posted by: Candy at July 17, 2006 10:31 PMThis is amazing! Thanks!
Posted by: Denise at July 19, 2006 12:41 AMThanks to those who say they are enjoying the links.
I'll put them in an table, alphabetical by artist, when I'm done with the decade.
My favorites for that year are "La Bamba" and "Little Lies."
I'd forgotten how much I loved loved loved Crowded House back then. Watching the video/hearing "Don't Dream It's Over" just brought back a flood of memories.
I also had forgotten how much I'd loathed hair metal. Just never got it.
And Starship. How violated do you think the Flower Children were by Grace Slick's transformation?
Man there was some big hair back then.
Thanks for the links!
