According to the BBC, some fellows of unidentified origin will get to enjoy one of those comfy Danish jails I've heard about:
Danish police have arrested nine suspected terrorists, the country's security intelligence service says. The suspects, believed to be all men under the age of 30, were picked up during overnight raids in Odense, Denmark's third largest city.
From USA Today, much more info and a shocker thrown in:
The arrests occurred at 2 a.m. in Vollsmose, a mostly immigrant suburb west of Odense, Denmark's third-largest city.Lars Findsen, head of the Danish Security Intelligence Service, said the suspects had acquired materials to build explosives "in connection with the preparation of a terror act," without elaborating. He did not reveal the planned target of the attack and said it was hard to evaluate how far the plot had come along.
"With the general terror situation, the Danish Security Intelligence Service didn't want to run any unnecessary risk," he said.
Findsen said the suspects — comprised of ethnic Danes and immigrants aged between 18 and 33 — would face a custody hearing later Tuesday.
Some background for the story:
Terrorists have not hit Denmark in 20 years...
That would be when Hezbollah bombed a Northwest Orient Airlines office, a nearby synagogue, and a Jewish home for the elderly in Copenhagen, Denmark.
...but the 2005 London transit bombings stirred fears that the Scandinavian country could be targeted for its participation in the Iraq and Afghanistan coalition forces.
The bombings 20 years ago were retaliation for Israeli raids on 2 south Lebanon villages.
It's always something.
Posted by floridacracker at September 5, 2006 08:17 AMThere's a running joke on local morning drive-time regarding news items like this.
You see, they never release the names of the "youths/suspects/whatevers", so the deejays provide their best guesses:
"Mohammed,
Mohammed,
Mohammed,
Osama,
Mohammed,
Mohammed,
Mohammed..."
They're sinking their own boat when they do this: it ruins their credibility. We're beginning to joke about the media like the Soviets did.
