Adios

Goodbye, Mr. Diaz, you won't be missed:

The Miami Herald's publisher resigned Tuesday, saying "ambiguously communicated" personnel policies resulted in the firings of three journalists at its Spanish-language paper who were paid to appear on U.S.-government broadcasts aimed at promoting democracy in Cuba.

Jesus Diaz Jr., the papers' publisher since July 2005, had dismissed two El Nuevo Herald reporters and a freelance contributor who had been paid by Radio Marti and TV Marti. Diaz said the company offered to rehire the three and that six others who took payments would not be disciplined.

Diaz also resigned as president of the Miami Herald Media Co.

It's just another chapter in the saga of a paper that's been heading downhill since the '80's.

More on this latest dust-up Herald Watch.

In a ludicrous column by the Herald's Ana Menendez, she writes that not even fiction writers should write for the government. Famous writers who have include Conrad Aiken, Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Max Bodenheim, John Cheever, Loren Eiseley, Ralph Ellison, Vardis Fisher, Zora Neale Hurston, Weldon Kees, Claude McKay, May Swenson, Richard Wright, and Frank Yerby. People will still be remembering their work long after Miss Menendez's is mouldering in the landfill.

Dr. Seuss did a ton of great work for the US Government during WW2.

He sure did, the tainted bastard.

Does this also mean she's against any artists taking grants from the government?

Should journalism students take government scholarships? Should there be any journalism schools in government-funded universities?

This rabbit hole is going to require some Mandarin familiarity soon.

I don't feel like subsidizing the priestly class. They need to start hauling their own freight if they truly want to avoid taint.
