The Sultan Of Steroids

The chemical compound with the street name "Barry Bonds" is heading for the open market. Will the Giants cough up big money to keep their favorite asterisk?

My prediction is he ends up with the Texas Rangers. Our yankee neighbors to the north (anything north of Conroe is considered yankee territory here in Houston) seem to love dysfunctional sports figures. Can you just imagine Terrell Owens and Sterry Bonds kickin' it on the Dallas club scene?

What are some bad ones they'd had so far? I just know them for Pudge, who's a great catcher.

He's Yankee material. Why not add yet another grossly overpaid, colossal ego to the Dysfunctional Dynasty?

Frankly, I wish he would suffer a career ending injuring during the off-season. Bonds has to be the most hateful player to come around in a long time. Other players have been annoying, but Bonds has found ways to tick off everyone. Maybe MLB officials will catch him with steroids before the next season begins.

The thing that frosts me is that Hank earned his place in history legitimately. To sully his record this way (and it will likely happen next year) is shameful. Roger Maris has already been forgotten and dissed by MLB as part of the marketing plan put in place to recover from the All Star Tie Game disaster. Sosa and McGwire were poster boys for the Juiced Lifestyle.

I don't wish injury on anyone, but I hope baseball history will not gloss over this travesty. An asterisk is not enough for Barry Bonds.

Oops, in my haste I realize I mixed up my MLB marketing screw ups. The Sosa/McGwire carnival was designed to overcome the bad mojo of the '94 strike. The ridiculous over-reaction to the All Star Tie Game is that World Series home field advantage goes to the winner of the All Star game. My bad.

Donnah, Dallas seems to be the last stomping grounds for many primadonna sports figures in general, not just baseball. Mavericks had Dennis Rodman for a few games. Besides Owens the Cowboys have had a slew of jerks. Michael Irvin, Erik Williams, Leon Lett, to name a few. Usually drug charges but they're all around jerks. The Rangers have been generally good. Last thing I remember was Kenny Rogers beating up the camera guy. Really, I just don't like Dallas.

What should be truly amazing about Barry Bonds is how the best hitter of his generation, and perhaps at one time the best player, became almost universally disliked by the fans. By all accounts, Ted Williams was an asshole, but he can never be reviled like Bonds.

Barry is an interesting sidenote in that they've allowed him to remain around after sullying the sport with his antics for so long.
