Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

duanearethaslide450.jpg
Another in the series of pics of Duane during the Aretha Franklin sessions, this one with a nice view of his slide. That there are still more of these to come sets this session at the most photographed of his that I know of. Though they were Muscle Shoals musicians, they were flown to New York to record after the Alabama locale was abandoned after a couple of songs due to a dust-up between the studio owner, Aretha's manager-mister, and a horn player who was supposedly hitting on her. Too bad no one snapped a pic.
Wail on, Skydog!

Thart's the first time i've seen Duane Allman playing a Stratocaster. Do you know if he played them often? I always thought he preffered Les Paul guitars.

He played a Strat in the early days. Here's another pic of him with one:

Very nice pic Donnah. I still like that super-stache hes got there, though its not so long because its earlier years. Very nice, clear photo of the master jamming on the slide.

And yes he played the strat in the early years. One of my favorite pictures is where hes smiling bright and has a reddish strat i think... i'll try to post a link or something if i can find it, but hes smiling bigger than in the Fillmore East album cover =D
Again, great pic, cant wait to see sommore cool ones!

Thats one of my favorite pics of him, biggest smile I've seen under that mustache.
Boy I keep trying to grow my hair and beard so i can cut it like his, but I get impatient and chop it off... hah.

I wore the inverted Hitlerstache like Gregg for years, till a lil sweetie insisted I drop it...it was all blonde and everything.

I finally acquired a Corcidan bottle. weeeeeee
It sounds much 'honkier' than the repros. It is so amazing how many shutters flew on this guy, more than one would expect, I think. Never saw 25, but hundreds...maybe thousands of bonafide pics.

It appears from this pic Duane used an index finger damping (possibly) , which is absent from his LP slide use.

He made a bolt on sound just as hot as a setneck.

Aretha knew it.
Thanks Donnah.. Wail on brother..

Hi Donnah:
Hope you had a Merry Christmas. Been waiting for my present...and here it is! Another great shot as usual. Quick question for you, well 2 actually. First about the pic from a couple weeks back (short girls). Dixie right? Whatever happened to her? As I posted before, that would be an interview to get for a true Duane autobiography. Second, are there any pics with Duane's hair "down his back" as John Hammond, Jr. said. Opps, I lied, there is a third question. Do you know what the ring Duane wore on his right hand is? Sorry but inquiring minds HAVE to know! Thank you for my belated but bestest Christmas present! Wail on Bro!!

Well, a month or more back on ebay some guy was selling what was purportly a couple of Duane Allman guitar picks (Fender)that a former wife gave him. She had worked at Muscle Shoals and said she stole them from Duane. He got a lot of nasty emails! We are know that Duane played with his fingers! But, I found a couple of pics recently that showed Duane playing with a pick. This picture shows a pick stuck in his pickguard on the strat. SO HE DID PLAY WITH A PICK SOMETIMES. He used his fingers when he played slide. The guy in question got $557.00 or something for the picks. Who knows if they were authentic. But, in regards to the question about Duane playing Fender Strats. Before he switched to Gibson Les Pauls, Duanes favorite guitar was a Fender Stratocaster with a tele neck. He used a Dallas Orbiter(round fuzz effects box) with almost dead batteries to darken the sound and increase the sustain of this tone. When he switched to Pauls he ran straight through to the amp with no effects. I to have a real coricidin bottle. Bought in 71. It took forever to get the label off! lol. I wish I would have bought bunches but I didnt. I started playing guitar after listening to Duane on all night radio station from Little Rock, Ark. I live in Iowa at the time and music like this wasnt played on local stations. I never had another guitarist move me like Duane.(Its a spiritual thing) Wail on Skydog! Thanks for the new pic Donnah!

So much stuff to comment on I hardly know where to begin.
Ben, that's the Wilson Pickett pic. Duane's beaded fringe leather vest was a crime against humanity.

Cindy,
That girl wasn't Dixie. On Red Dog's old site, he had a couple of pics of her, then there's that dentist one I linked because Duane's in it. She was tall.
I've always thought the "hair down his back" thing was an exaggeration based on the times. I mean, there were people from high school saying that, and it wasn't more than a moptop. He never grew his hair long like Gregg's. It was too fine. I'll show you a pic later on of what's the longest I ever saw it.
I've always wondered about that ring too. I don't know what it is though, sorry.

I agree about his hair. Never saw his hair all that long. Its was thin and not near as thick as brother Greg's hair. It would sure be interesting to see what happened to Dixie and common law wife Donna. Its been lots of years and Duanes daughter is quiet as a mouse and doesnt make much news. Want to wish all A very Happy New YEAR. I wish y;all health, wealth and lots of vintage ABB music in the coming year.

Thank you Donnah, keeper of all things Duane! I knew I had never seen a pic with his hair much longer than his shoulders. As for the Dixie question, I hadn't gone back to see the link, sorry. Now for the ring, I guess we will just have to keep searching for the answer to that one. Have a very Happy New Year all! And again Donnah, thanks for all you do for us "Duaneiacs"

Yea that kind of apparel in my big smile picture is not good on Duane... at all... Dickey, yes, but Duane HECK NO. I like this black longsleve shirt look. And I definitely like the brothers wearing matching blue/white/pink tie dye shirts in the 1970 Fillmore East concert videos.

But anyhow... How/where and at what price does someone come across one of those coricidin bottle necks these days? If its so different from my plain glass slide I might pursue getting one if its not that big of an ordeal or cost... Im finding so far that Im best at slide vs other guitaring so far (dont practice much of any of it though)

In regards to getting a real vintage coricidin bottle. They are getting so scarce and expensive. They are very breakable as well. People that have them dont play with em much, they just save them. Do regular searchs on ebay and save a favorite search and they will email you when one shows up. They go from about $61.00 to over $400.00. Someone just sold one last week i think. I have a vintage 71 bottle that i bought a a local drug store. I had to soak the sucker for hours to get the label off. I still have it. The original ones have seams and arent as round etc as the copies. They quit making them because of the child safety cap issue and then went to plastic bottles.I wish now i would have bought a lot of em, but I didnt.

May i suggest Silica Sound slides. Hand blown and pretty to look at and have a great sound. www.silicasound.com. If you want a exact copy but with better glass that is smoother with no seams then I recommend; RBC makes excellent slides in many colors. The full name is The Real Bottle Neck Company out of Alabama.(so they have the Southern Heritage thing goin on) They have awesome slides as well. They also have great infomation about slide guitar players including a Duane Allman biography. Their web address is www.rbnc.net

Got $500.00! I might sell my real coricdin bottle , then again i might not! LOL :>

Y;all have a Happy New Year and don't forget to eat your blackeyed peas! :>

Hey i searched it up on ebay and the new ones look nearly identical to that one he has and they're cheap... under $15. But thats pretty much just like having my glass slide so I dunno if im going to get one.
I have, however, decided to try growing out my hair nice 'n' long like Duanes here. My brother has just come home from Hawaii for the holiday and his hair is even longer than when we saw him last, and shared with me the secret to getting through the ugly/impatient stage I always cut mine off in... get a hat. So i might try that out and then I'll work on that awesome piece of facial hair artwork.

(btw if I had $500.00 I'd put it towards my college loans... LOL either that or a nice guitar!)
Happy Holidays everyone!
