End Is Near For Men And Their Ceilings

[Guest post by Chris Judd.]

Apparently, the new Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is a woman.

Her ascent to prominence in a male-dominated field mandates, per AP style manual, that reporters work the term "glass ceiling" into their dispatches. But today's scribes have also added a hot new spin-off term: the marble ceiling. Because fancy government buildings like Congress have lots of marble. Get it?

The Pelosi story has produced a geyser of ceiling references, leaving shattered glass and marble strewn about like a young Rosie O'Donnell told the drugstore soda fountain was out of chocolate malteds.

Even before Pelosi took the oath, "marble ceiling" had made the list of terms established in 2006.

Breaking the marble ceiling is nice. But it's not good enough. The fight is not over -- not by a long-shot. It is also time for women to break:

*the retractable ceiling faced by observatory directors

*the blood-spattered ceiling hindering slaughterhouse forepersons

*the vertex ceiling holding back chief pyramid excavators

*the lead ceiling over top gamma ray inspectors

*the soundproofed ceiling stopping head studio engineers

*the Sistine Chapel ceiling discriminating against fresco restoration coordinators

Any others?

Conservatory directors must feel immensely cheated. That's all I got.

I made up a little jingle about Nancy:
Save us from Nancy Pelosi!
A regular Bela Lugosi.
So liberal that
the terrorists pat
her head saying "Now aren't we cozy?"

As I noted at my blog, white female librarians have long had marble ceilings. Didn't help us much.

Send a trackback to that post, Norma.

1. The curtain ceiling... as in the ceiling that isn't there, but we are assured by the MSN/Libs behind the curtain that it excist.

2. The burka ceiling... luckily, we are informed by our future Muslim Overlords that women actually like/respect/want/crave this one.

3. The Katrina ceiling... keeping minorities trapped in hurricane infested cities. Also known as race baiting, er, uh, I mean racism.

4. The Booosh ceiling... the default ceiling of the left. If all else fails, it's the last line of ceilings before common sense comes pouring in.

The invisible ceiling, longtime adversary of psychotic politicians like Nancy..

In a pinch I can only think of one ceiling that has truly held a woman back - the roof of Ted Kennedy's car but in this momentary spirit of non-partisan, non-sniping, I retract the statement.

Of course that might be an example of politcal correctness, a true ceiling to common sense if there ever was one.

Wait - that reminds me - when the TSA pretty much pulled my 76 year-old mother out of a wheel chair to search her at Hartsfield, she hit the ceiling. They'll need RPGs to stop her next time.

The Delta 88 ceiling hindering boiler room girls.
Sad but true.
