And no, Carl in Atlanta, I don't know where he got his necklace! ;)

Posted by: Donnah at January 31, 2007 12:28 AM

maybe Dixie bought it for him...the same place she got those Stevie Nicks shoes.

Donnah..has anybody ever linked Bob Dylan with Duane ? That sort of looks like his head. (whoever that is studying his perfect fingers)

You know..I voted for Jimmah (hey it was my first time pulling the trigger) and later saw the light. I wonder if Skydog would have 'changed', or if he would have become a real American..like Hanoi Hane.

Great pic, thanks Greg Henderson...and Florida Cracker. Go Colts !! (but it wold be nice to see a Gator boy win)

Posted by: csason at January 31, 2007 05:43 AM

Dang he's a skinny boy!

Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at January 31, 2007 06:17 AM

thanks donnah ... love him so ...

Posted by: Fearless Fred at January 31, 2007 06:42 AM

He looks totally content..sigh. Thank you Greg and thank you Donnah. So sad he didn't get to eat more than "beans for breakfast" Carl. Could have put some meat on them bones! If only.....

Among my favored photos of Duane Allman. Nice to see it again.

I'm waiting for Owen to identify the curly head in the foreground.
UPDATE:
D'oh! I just noticed you were already on the job! Maybe curly-head is that white-fringed-vest dude we saw in The White-Fringed Vest Mystery Dude series.
Somebody identified that guy, but damn if I can remember who he is.

Posted by: Donnah at January 31, 2007 12:47 PM

Cindy, I know what you mean. His pics give me an overwhelming desire to fatten him up, clean him up, and put him in good clothes. A chick thing maybe.

Posted by: Donnah at January 31, 2007 02:40 PM

Donnah, dont tell me you are a giver personality!!!!What with you wanting to help change him ....I wish someone had a little bit maybe he would still be with us!!! Just kidding I have been on those Yahoo and EHarmony personal sites too much ...thanks for mentioning me ...on this ...I spoke to a friend of mine and I learned a lot about his past ...He used to work with a very well known guitar repairman in Atlanta and he actually did a Refret on this guitar for Twiggs after Duanes Death apparently someone else had done a refret, the guy that did the famous frets in the back of it ...and said the refret was awful and he redid it and as far as he and I know that was probably the last refret done on it ...

Posted by: Greg Henderson at January 31, 2007 06:11 PM

As much as I admire Dickey Betts for his musicianship, songwriting ability and the influence that he (and Duane) have had on my guitar playing, it seems like the ABB certainly did the correct thing when they fired him several years ago. Although Duane was irreplaceable in every sense of the word, I believe that Derek Trucks rekindles some of the same ethereal improvisational genius that Duane constantly exhibited. I don't know how long the band will last, but I think that we can be happy that the vibe that surrounds the band seems to be more reminiscent of how it was in the beginning.

Also ...guys ...If you look at the Duane Pic from 1-24 this maybe the same shirt minus those flower child sleeves which I am sure drove him nuts trying to play with them ...looks like he took a pair of scissors to this one ....

Posted by: Greg Henderson at January 31, 2007 06:26 PM

what Carl said! Wail on!

Posted by: richard at January 31, 2007 06:28 PM

Twiggs did the first refret...he was better at tuning a Harley, obviously.

A side note about skinny and our beloved Skydog:

Every now and then a truly remarkable southerner surfaces, rekindling the flame of a once great
citizenry. Not only did Duane Allman surface, but he also *changed* the course of music. In other words, had he and Richard Betts (who imho left the real ABB
when Gregg rolled over for the law to save his neck)
never discovered the sweet sound of two lesters bleeding through celestions int he way that they did, bands like Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and even Alabama would never have existed.

(We might have a slew of Springsteen knockoffs to reminisce about...how thrilling for some. Not knocking the *Boss*, but if you've heard one of his songs you've heard them all.)

One characteristic Duane had was skinny. I can tel you girls..you probably could have fed him hominy and molasses four times a day, and he would have still been skinny-till maybe old age toned his type A personality down a bit. It's a southern thang. We've discussed Duane Allman's purported drug use before, and ruled out massive usage (more like sporadic binge usage/when good dope was around) since the kid just didn't have time, not to mention the idea that had he been the user he has been rumored to have been...it is likely he would have gone the route of Janis, Jimi and Jim.

I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I come from a large southern Scots-Irish (red hair convention family reunions) family scourged with vast numbers of lanky boys...me included.

Also..it really brings out the best in women !! ;)

Donnah, I know exactly what you mean about cleaning him up. I remember you asking if we thought he had a perm in some shots. I think he just didn't wash his hair much. Probably no time like the guys said. When his hair was freshly washed was when it looked poofy! And Lordy yes that boy needed some decent clothes. Until next week:) WAIL ON SKYDOG!

Posted by: cindy at January 31, 2007 11:26 PM

"Who cares about clothes when there's music to be played?"

Posted by: richard at February 1, 2007 12:26 AM

"[H]as anybody ever linked Bob Dylan with Duane?"

Oil and water if you ask me.

Posted by: Paco Malo at February 1, 2007 05:34 AM

COOL PIC BRO.
I still think Richard Forrest is tremenously under-rated as an artist & writer. There is no doubt & I think DA would agree we are very blessed to have tunes like 'liz reed, les brers & jessica. His gift to all us brothers (& sisters) of the road goes on foreva'

Posted by: LYVWIRE at February 1, 2007 08:34 AM

"Oil and water if you ask me." Johnny Winter probably thought the same thing..and Jimi.

I'll bet Duane could have really straightened up 'Maggie's Farm' a bit.

Posted by: csason at February 1, 2007 08:46 AM

"Somebody identified that guy, but damn if I can remember who he is."

I guess the concensus was Larry Reinhardt (sp?) from Dickey Bett's early band & Iron Butterfly later...

Would have loved to hear Duane playing on "Blood On the Tracks" sessions.
And southerner or Yankee, we were ALL way skinnier back then... (from the former "Skinny Dennis")

Posted by: Dennis at February 1, 2007 12:47 PM

Yea Csason, I went there May of 2005 on a road trip 10 hours drive JUST TO SEE THOSE GUITARS! It wasnt so well lit for me though... I do have some sneaked pictures of them though, as well as some other great artifacts
(lemme guess, you used your cellphone camera? HEHEHE thats what we did ;) way too easy to get round that rule hahahah)

That was a blast... I'd like to go again...
Well anyways theres a blues king competition locally by Guitar Center guitar shop by Musicians Friend Magazine... I think I might try my hand at the slide, perhaps, just for fun. I mean I think Im no good, but its about the fun, the music, going out there and playing from your heart. Though winning the new Mustang, Gibson '59 Reissue and amp, $5000 cash and some other things would be nice... Wish me luck on that, it's gonna go down in March I think. Gotta practice up....

Thinkin bout doing Not My Cross To Bear cuz I can play most of that, but I wanna incorporate the slide.. I can play Dreams but alone it will sound weird... :/ . Well I can hear in my head what Im playing along with, thats what counts for me! :D

Oh.. and I wish I were a skinny boy! :P

(ps, you sure that isnt Butch Trucks' curly hair? maybe not.. his was more wavy..)

Ben,

Well placed slide notes are always a hit at a competition..it has been my experience though that usually shop-sponsored events already have a winner picked vis a vis their judging system.

They can't seem to allow the applause meter be the end all/say all for the grand prize..having said that, I hope you do practice, and kick ass.

I made it to the finals of a state competition many years ago, using a 1974 'The Paul' and a slide. The sound people didn't like my tuning, the judges had no other slide players, and the local DJ won the acoustic..and the promoters (shop owners) were lucky, it just so happened the winner
of the overall category was also one of the promoters.

I am not saying I should have won over all (although I did win in the most unique or something like that) but the guy that should have didn't...and the crowd knew it. It was the last year they were able to pull it off. Hopefully Guitar Center will be wiser.

btw the grand prize for that event is sitting right beside me..(I bought it from the eventual owner, an early historic GT)

Posted by: csason at February 2, 2007 08:45 AM

Gold Top, Gold Top! Go, Daddy, Go. Love that "love valley" and "layla" sound of DA's gold top. Didn't the pickups from the GT go in the cherry sunburst with the kluson tuners?

Also, I remember that Dickey's gold top was a 54 or something that came with a trapeze and was red to start with. Goes to show that what you know may not be the whole.

Can anyone tell me where I can get my hands on some bootlegs. I have the S.U.N.Y. recording and have had the American Univ. one too. Donnah can you help me?
Awesome picture. I just finished reading the book by Randy Poe on our dear Brother. Any thoughts

Posted by: Joel Miller at February 2, 2007 10:29 PM

Wait, I thought Dickie had his Gold Top and then painted it red? I swear I knew that and I saw it at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland too...

Posted by: Ben at February 2, 2007 10:35 PM

yeah, but Dickey retrieved his 'red guitar' from the HOF and had it redone it straight flame, I think...or else redone in gold.. :p I can't remember.

Richard you are right about Duane's GT. It sold last year (or before) in Orlando for $750,000.00
at auction. It was the 'de-pupped' version..the plaintop has them in it. Hot 'Lanta has (from all accounts) never been altered, although I am absolutely certain that Skydog looked inside.

I wonder who has the mystery SG Dickey gave Duane..???

Posted by: csason at February 2, 2007 11:34 PM

When i went to the Hall of Fame, I saw Dickeys 'Goldie' (reddish in color) Duanes Honey Burst Les Paul (as seen in the 1970 Fillmore East dvd videos) and Hot Lanta, and I think I most definitely saw the SG as well in a case next to one of those 3.

Im gonna have to start up the old computer sometime (maybe remember tomorrow, someone remind me on the Duane pic) and post up what pics I got of them. Remember it was VERY dark in there with a little light on the guitars, and my friends cell phone hand wasnt steady enough for extreme clarity, but you can get the idea. I think I remember butterflies in my stomach lookin at em... sooooo cool.
I definitely need to take another trip down there, but its illegal for me to drive through NY, and I dont wanna do it anyway... ick. $12 tolls lol
Maybe I'll fly or somethin...

Posted by: Ben at February 6, 2007 11:12 PM

Got bored... so i started it up and looked at the old pics... The SG was in with his honey burst, and i unfortunately didnt get or receive a picture of 'Goldie' and 'Hot Lanta' (im so sad now) but thats where I saw them all, including his SG, in May 2005.

http://s148.photobucket.com/albums/s40/duanesslide/

Decided to go ahead and get photobucket to show these. Just really wish I had a pic of Goldie and Hot Lanta side by side... But they're in my memory forever.

Posted by: Ben at February 6, 2007 11:28 PM

hey csason i belive the sg in question is the possesion of graham nash of csny..purchased from the person to whom it was given after duanes death later purchased from that person by graham nash wife as a gift for her husband..this i belive is stated in poes book..
