l watched O'Reilly last night in the hopes that after his having read of the latest charges against (and admitted to by) Michael Devlin of 69 counts of forcible sodomy on a child that first he'd offer a heartfelt apology to Shawn Hornbeck for saying he liked living with his abductor, then secondly he'd perform a live self-debarking. No soap.
Jumping on the O'Reilly bandwagon, conservative columnist Ilana Mercer writes not in parody but in all seriousness that she expects her own daughter to remain logical and considerate towards her parents during a prolonged kidnapping, the effects of months spent bound, gagged, and blindfolded in a closet punctuated with repeated sexual assault notwithstanding. Presumably if this were the 1950s they'd both be bitching about all those zombified returning Korean War POWs who didn't meet their standards of mental hygiene.
Meanwhile, the second kidnapping victim, cheerful little Ben Ownby who was so insistent on getting back to school after his four-day 17-count ordeal, has already been reported as collapsing in class from post-traumatic stress.
The three counties involved in the case have laid their charges, most of which carry a penalty of life in prison; the Feds are up next.
Posted by floridacracker at February 6, 2007 10:50 AMI'll bet these kids never see 30. What a media circus..either they kill themselves, or wind up so fucked up-somebody does it for them.
I would have moved my child so far back in the woods by now, the channel 8 van would get stuck in the crick trying to find us..and the first guy to stick an ink pen into Devlin's cerebrum via his left orbit would be my new beneficiary.
Posted by: csason at February 6, 2007 11:19 AMHonest to God, I cannot believe the cruelty shown to this kid in the media.
It would never occur to me to criticize someone in this situation. I have no idea how I'd do under prolonged torment, why on earth would I be wagging my finger at some little 11-year old?
If I walked out to my car today and someone held a knife to my throat, would I fight or freeze? I have no idea, and Bill O'Reilly doesn't know what he'd do in either of these situations either because his expectations have never been tested by reality.
This thing has really infuriated me. I only hope that kid doesn't kill himself or start self-medicating with drugs and alcohol.

I hope you mean against Oprah, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Fox USA Today, People, etc., and all the others who continue to exploit these kids' nightmare.
FOR MONEY.
This county has a terminal illness: tertiary stage decadence compounded by chronic depravity, prurience, schadenfreude and anomie. "Go Roman" indeed. Like Caligula. For God's sake Oprah: what if one of these kids was YOURS?
Sorry for yelling with the caps, but even the mention of this story makes me sick. And angry.

Bill has turned into a caricture of the people he used to rail against.
Of late if I'm on Fox and his show pops I go elsewhere as I can no longer stand to hear him bloviate on his cause de'jure.
I have to agree with Carl, any promotion of this story by the MSM torques me the wrong way, hard.
Give those kids back what little of their childhood they have left back and leave them alone.
It got me so upset the other day. There was the big headline "Shawn helped guard Ben," then at the bottom of the article are paragraphs stating that it had been learned that Shawn had been held in such intense isolation and brutalized to such a degree during the first two months of his captivity that his identity had shattered. Ben's family had to put out a statement saying "Don't blame Shawn."
Not to mention the Murdoch conglomerate putting out a story that the biological dad Shawn hadn't seen since infancy had gone to prison for some sex crime. I'd bet a hundred dollars the kid didn't know that bit of information.
Let them go dig up dirt on Devlin. Like the sheriff said, Devlin didn't just wake up one morning and decide to be a kidnapper. There has to be a trail of molestations in his past.
Posted by: Donnah at February 6, 2007 03:54 PMThis is such a sad story to begin with. It's even sadder when Bill O'Reilly gets involved.
Posted by: JC Media Matters at February 6, 2007 04:40 PMIt wouldn't matter to me if it were O'Reilly or Olberman who said it. The statement was not only ignorant on its face, but it's being said like that on national TV was kicking a kid when he's down. It was a disgusting and reprehensible thing to do.
Posted by: Donnah at February 6, 2007 04:46 PM"most of which carry a penalty of life in prison"
I wish that they could ship Devlin down to Texas. We know what to do with people like him.
Posted by: kbiel at February 6, 2007 05:27 PMSorry to post again, but these horror stories are bad enough in and of themselves. What digusts me is the salacious coverage, and the fact that said salcious coverage actually SELLS in this sick nation. Big time.
Almost anyone who has lived long enough knows that life can be incredibly cruel, sometimes heartbreakingly, horrifically so. What does it say about a culture that revels in the sordid details of these things? What does it say about us as a people? Is this who we are? It would seem so.
Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at February 6, 2007 05:29 PMThere is not a remedy for the desire to have sex with children, right? It's like having rabies.
In less than a decade, China cleaned up its drug addict problem by taking every known drug addict out and shooting them right in the head.
Likewise, round up every s.o.b. on the registry, and make sure they never put their peckers in the wrong place again.
They are not just nusances, but evil and dangerous to the most innocent and harmless.
....grrrr
I'll bet if Bill had a cannon being held to his head by a 1200 pound gorilla with an infantile need to cornhole him incessantly...he'd probably bloviate all over himself..
Posted by: csason at February 6, 2007 10:53 PMEven Greta has left this case alone lately ...Bill O is definitely wrong on this one ...I usually agree with him ..but not here ...and since when is ESPN such a liberal podium ...Please stay just on sports and leave politics out of it ...Dan,Keith..and whoever that bedwetting sports babe CJ or JC or whatever she goes by on Saturday ...I guess I should say forced token woman sportscaster ...that the government or the PC police require them to have ..
