Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

DuaneAllmanwithhot_lanta_12-3450.jpg
Duane in embroidered jeans with Hot 'Lanta.
Wail on, Skydog!

Thanks once more to Greg Henderson for this one. The copy I had was poor and had Duane rather resembling the Creature from the Black Lagoon, if you can imagine the creature smoking on an electric guitar. It was a muttonchop issue.

UPDATE:
A repost for Sheila, who disingenuously asks for "the one where Duane is walking up the steps and walks up to the camera" to use for the opening page on her computer. Like she totally forgot all about how it would be like Duane giving her a kiss every morning.

Nice shot! Never seen Duane with hair so short. Has the flametop tobaccoburst les paul too!

Donnah, could I get you kindly to email me or post the gif that was once online here again? The one where Duane is walking up the steps and walks up to the camera? I had it on my pc and had a hard drive problem and no longer have it. I use it on my opening page when I open up my internet provider. Miss seeing Duane everyday on my pc walking toward the camera? :> Kinda inpires me to get through another day sometimes.

Love your photos. Keep em coming. Thanks for all the joy your give all the Duane maniacs out there! :> Finding new pics is getting harder and harder. Thanks for all your hard work!

Very nice, thanks Donnah.
You may have the wrong idea about global warming, your Wednesday pictures make up for everything you may have done wrong in this life and all previous incarnations.
To quote the Bible: 'Those that love Duane much, much is forgiven.'

Was Duane Allman a deadhead?

Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at February 7, 2007 07:08 AM

they played together a few times...from what I understand

Posted by: csason at February 7, 2007 07:15 AM

What about that Captain America tshirt ...and to me he looks like he is really skinny in this pic moreso than any pic I have ever seen of him ...he looks rough in this one ...and no I dont know what that is ..part of a stage curtain I think ...Donnah ...thanks for mentioning me in the picture post ....by the way happy 70th Birthday to a man that doesnt like the Allman Brothers at all ...My Dad Berry ....see it was in the genes to like the Allmans ....there was this whole total cosmic connection !!! LOL...had he not made us turn the TV off when Cream was on the Ed Sullivan Show ...I may have never wanted to play guitar in the first place!!!!

Posted by: Greg Henderson at February 7, 2007 07:21 AM

Donnah have you ever thought of publishing a book with all of these pics ...might be a captitalistic opportunity!!! And what is your thoughts on global warming ....dont tell me ...you like the Allmans and Al Gore too!!! Dont spoil it for me !!! LOL

Posted by: Greg Henderson at February 7, 2007 07:24 AM

Yea Bro, Yes I remember the "Ed Sullivan " incident ! But, I will never forget the way Ginger Baker looked beating those skins behind Eric & Jack Bruce ! Oh yea , Happy Birthday to "White Spider "

Posted by: Lyv Wire at February 7, 2007 07:42 AM

Yeah Bro ....Ginger had a cigarette out of both sides of his mouth .and it was smoking!!...what would Tipper,Barbara and Oprah have done if they saw that from a performer of today !!! And if some of the politically correct fem babes had seen this they would have to get out from beneath the table of the producer they are auditioning for to protest!!! Meanwhile back at the ranch ...Wail on Skydog!!!!

Those embroidered roses are not evidence that Duane was a Dead head or fan. Annie Leibovitz took a picture of Keith Richards circa 1975 that had similar roses embroidered on Keef's jeans. You can see that picture at the post "I Heard a Good Joke Today" by clicking on my pen name below.

A cool picture of da man as always...

I finally broke down and bought a guitar that looks similar to Hot 'Lanta from a friend of mine that was closing his record store after 20+ years this weekend. Its in the shop getting tweaked so I can enjoy shredding my noncalused fingers as I relearn how to play again. See what your blog has inspired?

Posted by: Gmac at February 7, 2007 10:43 AM

Thank you Donnah. I had seen this one before in the "creature" version. Didn't care for it much, but good pic now that it's cleaned up. Thank you too Greg. The boy was skinny in all his pictures, but the angle does kind of exacerbate it. I guess I don't need to go into the chick thing of feeding him now do I? I think we all had some embroidered pants, shirt, ect. if you were alive in the late 60's early 70's. My favorite pair of jeans had a family of brightly colored fish on them along the bell bottomed hem and a huge peace sign on the butt. Fashion? Go figure:) You are right csason, nothing better than Wednesday at the Cracker's!!!! Wail on Skydog!!!!!

Duane thought Jerry Garcia was a "beautiful cat" and a true pure spirit. Duane loved the "Dead"

Fantastic photo, almost looks like Duane was using a combover.

Posted by: Willard at February 7, 2007 04:50 PM

Is that Duane next to Gregg ??? I cant see it well enough ...I see Pigpen ...that maybe Danny Kirwan with his back turned to the left ...I see Jerry back in the right corner ...what a jam/mess that could have been ....By the way where was Crackers?? I have never heard of that place ...where was it ...and GMac where are you from?? Are u in hot lanta ???

My day was awesome today! Thanks to Donnah for re-posting the Duane kiss gif!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have people pc and they have a little box when you open the browser up. It has advice etc but you can put a personal picture there as well. Now, when I open it Duane is smiling and walking up to me and blowing me a kiss! How cool is that!
(I didnt want to admit it was a kiss lol) I was kinda embarrassed. Got to admit I have often wondered that if we would have met, would he have liked me or passed me by. (I did and do play guitar because of hearing Live at the Fillmore East.) The Only solos that have so much emotion in them it bought me to tears were the one's he played! Wail on Skydog!

I'm a native in a strange land... AL. I lived in Doraville in the 90's.

Posted by: Gmac at February 8, 2007 05:21 AM

We are all natives in a strange land these days...we need to petition Duane's daughter and the tour mystic Kirk West to release more of the home videos and stuff with Duane and Berry on them...there is more than what we have pretty much all seen ...before all of us that they would mean something to ...die off or get too old to care!!! although I dont see the latter happening .anytime soon or the previous I hope not ...

Posted by: Greg Henderson at February 8, 2007 08:05 AM

I'd love to see more Duane stuff. I keep holding out hope that there is some stuff from Bill Graham's collection that could flesh out some early Allman concert performances. I saw a segment of CBS's "Sunday Morning" where they said Bill kept everything of the memorabilia and filmed concerts as well. The collection was so large it hadn't been catalogued. Anyone heard about this?

Posted by: Willard at February 8, 2007 09:59 AM

I'm with Greg. I quit smoking, became a vegetarian and started practising yoga, just so I would live long enough to watch the Duane Allman DVD that is sure to come out one day.

Posted by: peter at February 8, 2007 02:48 PM

Shelia, that's the coolest thing ever. you Go!

Posted by: richard at February 8, 2007 06:38 PM

I know Derek Trucks has had access to the video the general public had been banned from, for some insane and bullshit reason...he couldn't have just *dreamed
up* his technique from others descriptions. I have seen Dickey play several times...and heard him describe Duane's technique in an old GP issue.

Isn't it odd that the very shots we all want to see are the ones that are kept from view ??

I don't remember discussing it here, it might even get us kicked out..but it is wrong, I say bullshit and let us see the Fillmore clips of the Allman Brother's Band Fillmore live.

Posted by: csason at February 8, 2007 08:51 PM

Wow ......would love to see those films if Derek has seen some of them ...as Derek is a gentle kind soul ...a definite strong case for reincarnation if there ever was one ...He has the same talents ...if not somewhat different ....

Posted by: Greg Henderson at February 8, 2007 09:08 PM

Yea Im always up for watching some great Duane footage. I downloaded the 1970 Fillmore East concert, 36min i think. Pretty good, just the camera choices during Duanes leads werent always on him or on the right parts (i.e. his HANDS so i could watch the magic) heh.

Heres one I REALLY wanna get my eyes on:
In one video I downloaded that originated on VH1 I think, They have the band in the 90s playing Statesboro Blues and jamming all in black and white, and they show clips from an alleged 1969 concert in color of them playing Statesboro Blues outdoors.
I WANT TO SEE THE SHOW START TO FINISH OF ALL THE FILMING SO BAD!!! It's been bugging me for a year or 2 now.
That and any other bits of Duane I've never seen that are good too.

Heck, search youtube for 'Allman Brothers 1971' and you'll find a clip I hadn't seen until only a few months ago of 'Done Somebody Wrong'. Pretty cool.

MORE DUANE!

Thanks for all the great pics Donnah.

Linked in there is part 2 as well. Longer than my version I downloaded so this is cool.

The mystery to me is why these videos havent shown up! Are we, his fans so much a minority that no one hears our cry for more existing Duane Allman video? I don't think so! I agree with the person earlier who said please, PLEASE release these tapes before we all are too old to care. We want to see as well as hear his Natural Fire!!! Not to put the newer fans down; but it would mean so much more to those of us that were fans of the Allman Brothers while Duane was living! POWERS THAT BE, HEAR OUR PLEA, SET THOSE DUANE TAPES FREE!!!! AND WAIL ON SKYDOG!!!:>

Posted by: Sheila at February 9, 2007 02:46 PM

Actually, the powers that be do want to release material and produce a Duane Allman DVD. Just footage, music, no story. The reason it takes long and may take quite some time more, is the usual thing: rights. So many people, estates, companiesand what not are involved.
This information comes from Kirk West, ABB manager. He posted it on the ABB hittin the note website.
Patience,prayer,perseverence.

It's already been 36 years! They need to get the lead out already. Maybe they'll just dawdle another 36 and all the copyrights will be expired.

Posted by: Donnah at February 9, 2007 06:20 PM

a definite strong case for reincarnation if there ever was one ..

Greg, I don't think so..I post over at HTN, and The Les Paul forum a bit also...the reason I mention it is that I have met so many slide afficianados who learned Duane's tunes in the wrong tuning, and later discovered several differences after talking with Skydog's close people.
Anyway, it isn't just coincidence that out of the hundreds of picker's I have met, that Derek just pops in off the horizon and had DA's techniqued patterned exactly. I am GLAD he is carrying on, most of all the slide as a mainstream instrument.

Fillmore was played on three separate nights from my understanding, and they played one night in particular (Sunday I believe it was) just for producers and VIP's. You can hear the deadness in the audience on the recordings that were selected from these nights...in my opinion, Sunday night was the night Whipping Post, Statesboro Blues, and Done Somebody Wrong were recorded, *but quite probable they were not filmed that night*.

Further evidence of this opinion of mine is Duane primarily, but Gregg also explaining a lot of the background/history of each tune on that night, much the same as one would do during an audition..

"Berry starts it off"
"Actually it's a T-Bone Walker song"
etc..

btw, if any re-incarnatin' was ever taking place, I would say it was Robert Johnson in Duane Allman..

my main beef is that Gregg and the rest of the conglomerate that comprises the vested interest in the Duane Allman years have locked down some of Skydog's best moments- and they didn't happen so that someone could profiteer indefinitly on them..

Thanks Donnah for the great as always life giving
stimulating Wednesday Duane Allman pic...
makes me glad I'm a Cracker...!

Wail on brother Duane..wail on.

That's a reason I never contemplated! Hiding Duane's technique by keeping the live footage from his adoring public! What would there be to gain? Its not like everyone who sees the video will be able to play like him! It is not possible. He played noon and night most of his life and that is why he was so very good. Also; he was playing from his heart and soul, from some special place not many people can tap into. I have never heard another guitarist touch the emotions played out so elequently as Duane! No one, not even Derek; bless his heart comes close. He may have the technique down but he is NO DUANE ALLMAN! But, he is a heck of a Derek Trucks and that is no mean feat. He just doesnt have the chrisma Duane had. Cant be bought and it cant be taught, it just is. (Natural fire)
For that matter if that is true. All a guitarist would have to do is study Derek. And there is lots and lots of video out for all to see of him.
I love this forum because of all the imput from other like me who love the Allman Brother band and especially Duane. It makes me think and look at things in a different way. Thanks to all and especially Donnah who makes these posts possible. Not to mention the awesome Skydog pics every Weds. I love Weds! :>

Donnah, what kind of program do I need on my pc to get the Duane kiss gif to play? Thank you for posting it but I tried for several days to get it to play but all I see is a dark pic with no movement. I had to replace my hard drive and I must be missing a program. I have java and adobe and it still doesnt work. Do you know if I need apple quicktime or what? I miss seeing Duane kissing every morning. I tried to fix it myself, but I dont know what to do to get the gif to play? Any and all help will be much appreciated!!!

Posted by: Sheila at February 10, 2007 11:07 PM

Donnah dont know how to send it to you but on the homepage of Allmanbros site there is a new pic of Duane sleeping on the floor with his Les Paul in his arms. It is on the offstage photos submitted Feb 7 2007. It would make a great Wed pic. Im sure it would get a bunch of comments. You may have found it already.

Some may fear this upcoming time... but I cherish it.. Im talking about TAXES and the IRS. I always put tons aside so I never owe, and get some back... This past year... it payed off! Im getting plenty back and am looking into a Gibson Les Paul. Looking at one like this:
http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--GIBLP5M
Plays real nice and its priced at $1899.00 and I could prob haggle them down... But its a nice color that I dont see too much of and the flame top is excellent... Sounds real good, and I played a comparatively priced 1960 reissue gold top bullion that sounded good, but not as good as that special Santa Fe one... and i like regular gold top, not bullion (its darker)

Any thoughts?
(and Csason... I looked into the competition.. its nation-wide, not worth my time to go against professionals haha)

Posted by: Ben at February 12, 2007 12:31 AM

Blog-mother says it best: Get the lead out!

Duane wouldn't have wanted his shit sitting on a shelf.

hey, Ben, I got an '82 standard for 1400 bucks in atlanta. play before you buy. ;)

Posted by: richard at February 12, 2007 04:24 PM

Ben, checked Musicians Friend. I found the Santa fe for $2499.99 there. So, thats a excellent deal for $1899.00! I would say, if you really want it, it will call to you. (no kidding) and I would snap it up. Richard is right! Try before you buy. Mail order is great for low prices, but all guitars are not created equal! Local stores can set it up for you and tweak it so it plays like you want. MF doesnt do anything so set up is extra. And if you get a dud. Your stuck unless you send it back. A lot of trouble and a hit or miss situation. Good luck! Hope you find your dream guitar! (I am still looking>)

Posted by: Sheila at February 13, 2007 12:25 AM

Oh yah, I played it in the store. Just looked it up online for any kind of rating or commentary, but nothing. I might even be able to talk them down further hahah. I dunno... been thinkin bout the '60 reissue Gold Top sommore though... but i got about 3 weeks to play all sorts of guitars in my range and decide.

That Santa Fe was definitely a great one, and Limited Edition too.. and it sounded and played soooo fine... Im thinkin I might just go with that one.. but it's gotta stay in the store until I get my cash. (unless i find a WAY better sounding guitar thats affordable, and especially if it's in a classic burst with flametop, say tobacco sunburst... awwwww yeah B) My fav )

So richard... that standard... what color and specs? all orig? hows it sound? =P Im real far away, but Im curious is all.
