This isn't the first bad picture Duane's took, but it's the first to make me think of "I Love Lucy."
Wail on, Skydog!
Injured his middle finger has he - soon his neck too, with that position of the zebo strap ring.
Posted by: Tom at February 21, 2007 03:31 AMYeah, looks like he's skinned it up in a couple of places. He might not have been too cautious with those million-dollar fingers.
Posted by: Donnah at February 21, 2007 03:36 AMYoung and careless was he. As you have pointed out, unfortuanently not a Volvo driving man.
Posted by: Tom at February 21, 2007 03:52 AMI think we all know what happened to *that* shirt...
(the front got messed up when he finished changing that leaky oil tank- my Mom salvaged the rest and made a pillow slip)
You're so *on* with the *I Love Lucy* thought, Donnah. Duane Carmichal...???
This pic must be right after the night the band switched places with the roadies at Fillmore..heh heh
Posted by: csason at February 21, 2007 05:14 AMoh..I forgot something.
Now that Duane is close to retirement age..

Posted by: csason at February 21, 2007 05:53 AMDo you suppose he messed his hands up throwing knives at the back of one of the many hotel dressers? Has he got a pick in his mouth? My pictures is real blurry for some reason. Must have been a number with both slide and lead cause he only finger picked slide parts and used pick with lead parts. Guess his mouth was a good pick holder! He did have a Volvo but he managed to wreck it too. That skinny white, blues playing fellow lived his short life full out for sure! Anyway, thank you Donnah for making Wednesday my most favorite day of the week! Wail on indeed!
Posted by: cindy at February 21, 2007 07:17 AMmmmmm, Duane takes a break mid-song to enjoy a delicious Fender Medium or Heavy guitar pick. The snack choice of hungry pickers everywhere!
Wail on! ;)
Posted by: richard at February 21, 2007 07:42 AMi've loved duane for 35 years, but even i know his layla comment - "i play the gibson, eric plays the fender" was meant for guys like me. i'm a serious guitar kook, but i love it so. so, i'm guessing this is a photo of midnight rider, since he plays a little slide in that, thus the pick momentarily in his chops??? i'd read recently about songs he'd do in straight tuning verses open tuning, though as i said, i wouldn't know one from the other, but i love reading ya'll's nuanced duane-guitar discussions going back and forth and am looking forward to further enlightenment.
Posted by: mike at February 21, 2007 09:32 AMActually Duane did have a Volvo for a while. A P-1800, like the car driven by The Saint. I owned several and almost bought the one Duane owned, but lost contact with the guy who was putting me in touch with the guy in Georgia who owns/owned it. Duane's had the old ABB mushroom logo etched in the side rear glass. I have pics of it somewhere.
Posted by: Glenn Boireau at February 21, 2007 10:07 AMThat looks like the classic motorcycle chain/hot muffler scrape/burn.
Posted by: mike the bike at February 21, 2007 11:33 AMWhat's the story on the shirt?
Posted by: Mary at February 21, 2007 11:52 AMDear csason,
Thank you for the YouTube URL you gave us above, linking us to "planetalk" playing "Begin the Beguine" on acoustic and slide guitar. It's masterful. I wonder what Cole Porter would have thought of it.
Cole Porter got no kick from cocaine but I bet he'd dig some tasty arrangement like that.
Posted by: richard at February 21, 2007 04:54 PMAll the other session players drove corvette etc. When one would buy a car all the others would go out and buy the same thing. Thats why when Duane passed he was driving a new Volvo. He deliberately didnt want to follow the crowd! He used the money from the Layla sessions to buy it. It was sold after his tragic passing for $2,000.00. Berry Oakley got all his house furnishings for the huge sum of $100.00! I think he had $800.00 in his pocket. Not a lot of money for someone who is still rockin our world with his awesome tones! He never lived to enjoy it. I often wonder how he would have reacted with all the cash that started coming in after he died. Wail on Skydog Forever! (Forever Young, while we fans of the days gone by are gently aging by the day. lol)
Posted by: Sheila Smith at February 21, 2007 06:13 PM Late but here!
I agree with Mike : That's definitely a burn on top of his finger, God knows from what.
I saw his brother Gregg last week at the store and he has always looked better than his brother.
Posted by: Catfish at February 21, 2007 06:50 PMI guess y'all missed my earlier clue..
It looks like a burn similar to one or two I have had from working on hot engines (when needed)..
like he had to jam his hand down in behind something
like a starter, or better yet..the oil reservoir on a Harley. They are/were notorious for being leaky...yep...he was working on something, and got a little too close to the manifold.
Crazy rascal sure could play ...
Posted by: csason at February 21, 2007 09:27 PMRegarding Cole Porter and cocaine, Ask.com come makes it clear that Porter's knowledge of cocaine is from personal experience. Given the age he lived in, and his overall decadent lifestyle, this seems guite likely.
In my view, what Porter is doing with that "no kick from coke" line is what most crafty songwriters and winners-of-ladies'-hearts do, stating poetically that the particular lady sought is better than anything the pursuer can think of. In applying this technique, I find stealing the last couplet from Emmylou Harris' cover of "Tennessee Rose" (written by Karen Brooks and Hank Devito) an unbeatable line. Adapted for playful exchanges with my South Carolina-bred grandmother, I'd change the couplet by telling her "I wouldn't take the whole world dipped in gold, for a few moments with my South Carolina rose."
Posted by: Paco Malo at February 22, 2007 10:32 AMGreat pic, Donnah!
Yea picks taste pretty good. =P I think he's playing Dreams or Mountain Jam because he plays finger style then slide, then goes back on both.
And whats with that date? 1970/22/32 1970???
Oh yah... and look at it... he would have his mouth WIDE OPEN if he wasnt using it to hold a pick at that moment... HAH!
Wail On!
Thanks again Donnah, for another good one! =)
Posted by: Ben at February 22, 2007 11:14 AMIt looks like to me he was playing Dreams cause he was in standard tuning probably ....does someone here have that shirt made into a pillow?? I am going to see a friend of mine tonight who did the pencil scetched tshirts of the some of the Allmans and I have another friend who has the original picture that started all of that ...pretty cool ....its the string of shirts that Dickey talks about on his video ..mentioning that the Allmans had three guitar players they just needed to find a bass player !!! talking about B.O. ..peace
Posted by: Greg Henderson at February 22, 2007 04:32 PMJust in case you haven't read it, Skydog, The Duane Allman Story by Randy Poe is a great read.
Posted by: Jeff at February 23, 2007 12:39 AMSkydog, The Duane Allman Story by Randy Poe is a really good read. Enjoy!
Posted by: Jeff at February 23, 2007 12:44 AMCheck out the picture on the cover of Skydog, The Duane Allman Story by Randy Poe. Ol' Duane's got the Coricidin bottle on his ring finger, and the pick in his mouth. Probably playing "Dreams" and had to make the "switch" in the middle of the song; he could sure multi-task.
Also readers, check out Midnight Riders by Scott Freeman (especially the first 150 pages) for more of the Duane Allman story.
What is up with you guys, you sound like Mr. Popeil.
Posted by: Donnah at February 23, 2007 05:48 AMMr. who :o? Is he a librarian or something? I mean everybody is recommending books after all. No wait, maybe he's a motorcycle machanic, or a Volvo salesman! Maybe you're talking about the ultimate salesman (it slices & dices) maybe. And did somebody mention the dreaded little bro looking better than DA? As all our Momma's used to say "looks ain't everything". Never the less, as always, Wail on Bro!

Is this something GA said? Does anyone know what the shirt story is? I've never heard it.
Posted by: Mary at February 23, 2007 09:36 AMPoe book: most the extant info is in that guitar player cover issue from 82 or 81 or whenever i was a pup. the cool stuff was the wyker and alabama connection stuff along with the more in-depth session talk. plus the little bit about select axes was choice.
as for some legends, what if roland kirk passed on playing with Duane? tsk tsk. that "Push, Push" solo with herbie mann is Choice R and B, Prime Cut.
Posted by: richard at February 23, 2007 04:31 PM....Does anyone know what the shirt story is? I've never heard it.....
I was just using the more vivid side of my imagination... the shirt reminded me of a pillar my Mama had once, and it looked like he burnt his fingers on a bike...that's all. ;)
Everything you always wanted to know about Duane Allman can be found on Fillmore East.
Amen to that Csason.
Man that '59 was HOT. Isnt that why he named 'er Hot 'Lanta? I dont have a name for my guitar... not good enough for a name heh. Might work on one for my new guitar.
Im thinkin, again, about getting the Gold Top Classic '60 reissue, doubling as an investment, what do you think? Sounds about as good as the cheaper used smartwood, and has good treble switch sound over it and looks better. Would fetch a better trade or be more proud of it later on down the road.
Sounds like your sitting on the fence again Ben! Go search out your baby! Dont be in a hurry to grab a Paul. It will speak to you when you play the....right one! You are wavering to much. Dont buy until you find ....the one!
