I've never seen "The Sarah Silverman Program" ("Law & Order" runs perpetually in my house, with weekly breaks for "Rome." If there were a "Law & Order: Ancient Rome" show, that would be perfection) but reader rg seems to enjoy it, so I've found a clip. What do you think? The star's a mean, sarcastic girl and I have a policy of steering clear of that type, to include throwing sheets over mirrors:
I avoided it at first because her "cute girl says outrageous things" act wears a little thin on me, but I ended up watching one and found I really liked it. So far. Of course, that they played the climatic song from "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon" during a big fight between two doughy white guys helped sell me. I can't resist references to that movie.
Posted by: marc at February 25, 2007 10:31 PMThat was my worry as well, and still is actually as I've never seen a show. The clip is hilarious, but I can't watch negative humor long-term: it starts to kind of depress me.
Posted by: Donnah at February 25, 2007 10:52 PMsort of like a femi-Seinfeld deal... it is funny, though.
Posted by: csason at February 26, 2007 10:43 AMI'm not a particular fan of negative humor, but I like the show a lot.
Posted by: dorkafork at February 26, 2007 11:02 AMThe Sarah Silverman show is so funny. Last weeks episode was great with the fart bomb in the cop car. Thank Gawd for tivo. Cuz we have the same Law and Order problem.
Posted by: msfanni at February 26, 2007 12:29 PMit bites. try again, o talented jewess!
Posted by: richard at February 26, 2007 03:35 PMWell, I guess it's just one of those things, where you either like it, or you don't. I couldn't believe how many people I knew absolutely couldn't stand Curb Your Enthusiasm. I really liked that show, but it's not like you can talk someone into it.
Rome is a really great series. I haven't watched the new ones yet, but I kept getting the feeling that it was on the verge of jumping the shark, toward the end of the first season. I was half expecting them to introduce a mop-top, sassy little kid named cousin Oliver, or something. I hope they didn't spoil it.
Posted by: rg at February 26, 2007 08:40 PMI'm intrigued.
The mean stuff can be funny if done by an idiot (Homer Simpson) and it's a little less rewarding done by smarties (Seinfeld clan.)
That said, I have a thing for cute women who are funny. Steve Martin brought my wife and me together.
Posted by: CJ at March 2, 2007 11:35 AMI don't know, CJ. I once tried to watch an entire brown grocery sack of "Married With Children" videos in Germany (one channel only makes for lots of vid borrowing) but felt poisoned and had to stop. The Bundys were idiots, but I still couldn't take it. It was funny, but the mean-spiritedness got to me after a while.
Posted by: Donnah at March 2, 2007 12:00 PMHmmm...the Bundys. I have to work on my Mean Idiots are Funny Theory.
I guess there is a limit. The sheer volume can wear you down. Silverman has potential. I found the cliip to be clever, and nothing on TV is clever anymore.
