Posted by: csason at February 28, 2007 06:48 AMBoy csason, you have got it all right today! I should have logged on earlier because all I can do is AMEN your post!
I will add a thank you, thank you and 1 more thank you to Donnah, our Duane guru!
Wail on Skydog!
Ah yes, the denim period....
...and brand spanking NEW denim at that; before you had your basic prefaded, stone-washed, ready-torn and artificially aged $250 Calvin Kleins.
I can still remember the pleasure of a brand new pair of blue jeans; the kind you had to roll up a bit until they got broken in. Worn with converse sneakers or sometimes, penny loafers (weejuns only, please). The kind that earned their ripped knees on the flexi-flyer or down by the creek, which your mother would fix with those oval shaped denim knee patches. Took a year or more to get them right.
Those were the days, no?....
Posted by: Carl in Atlanta at February 28, 2007 07:01 AMCsason, it's not an SG. Before they used the SG nomenclature, they were "les paul" models. les' contract with gibson expired and they quit using the les paul body shape until he re-signed. get to googling, young man. from like 62 to 68, i think.
check for pix of les paul and mary ford with the SG body style les paul models
that's the one dicky played and gave to duane so he wouldn't have to re-tune, right? too f-ed up to check. ah, indolence, my constant companion
Posted by: richard at February 28, 2007 09:26 AMDear Professor csason,
For those of us who are learning, please translate "now that by God is an SG !!! with a Lester neck ??
trapezoids ???" into plain English. Wait, now I see the trapezoids, but I still want to understand the rest. Thanks in advance.
Dear Donna,
A thousand thank you's.
sheesh.. you tell me..
Richard, I thought about that (one of the notch Lesters) right after I posted that..(actually while I was typing..but laziness overwhelmed me...AGAIN)
but yes..that is the one.. A Les Paul- with *wings*!
To reply to your query Paco, what Richard pointed out was what jiggled my memory (as I was hitting 'post' and running off to work) this guitar is the one that Dickey gave Duane. It looks like an SG with a Les Paul neck, because lesters have trapezoid inlays. (What was to become, and still is, the SG has the block inlays)
But since it is a Les Paul, the neck is correct.
sry if I messed up and you already were aware.
and yes..Sir Carl, those were the days.. since I was on the basketball team, I had *red* Converse.
From now on Richard is (always has been) the resident 'Skydog's Fiddle info resource'...damn Google.
That Richard's a smart fella. :-)
Posted by: scotty at February 28, 2007 04:30 PMOh my....weejuns....haven't thought about those in years! Had a navy blue pair. Loved those shoes! I played basketball as well csason and we wore lowtop converse because we wanted to be "bad" like the boys team. No wonder my damn ankles and feet are so messed up. Those shoes had zero support (for both the feet & the ankles)! Remember how your legs would have a blueish tint before the jeans got washed a couple of times and the dye would rub off on you? What good memories new levi's, converse, weejuns but mostly Duane Allman bring back!!!
Posted by: cindy at February 28, 2007 05:24 PMThank you csason and richard for the explanation of the guitar discussion.
Now, I was also on the basketball team "back in the day"; I also wore both low and high top Converse All-Stars, including one pair of red ones for off the court -- I have the 14 sprained ankles to ankles to prove it. But I'm shocked nobody has, as yet, referred to these classics as "chucks", referring to Chuck Taylor's trademark signature on the inside of the tongue. Anyway, in Tampa in the early '70s, we called 'em chucks.
Posted by: Paco Malo at February 28, 2007 08:22 PMWow Donnah, nice pic there. Good shot of Duane expressing himself through slide.
Lemme guess...
I think he's playing "Dont Keep Me Wonderin"
I havent seen any snapshots like this before.. And its a good one, too! Thanks Donnah!
Posted by: Ben at February 28, 2007 09:41 PMi'm just a guitar geek. Duane looms large in my legend. I freaked when i realized his climax licks on whipping post, liz reed and other things were just john coltrane's sheets of sounds running through that tennessee blood, plus i think Duane and myself both hold b.b. king in the same esteem.
Wail on!
(boo, 25 comments on Al Gore, the senator's son born to privelege like Shrub, who could NEVER fly a jet, i betcha! divinity school's ass!)
Posted by: richard at March 1, 2007 07:58 PMIM SO EXCITED!!!!! XD
I just learned how to play what Duane does a lot on Whipping Post where he bends a note slightly out of tune with an octave higher so they almost clash but they make a nice wailing sound! Its SOOO cool but it hurts the hand quite a bit..
Oh and I think I've decided on a Les Paul Standard '60s neck (would take 50s neck cuz of ratings, but none are here on location). Has alnico V pickups unevenly wound like vintage 50s pickups (YAY) and plays good too. Just one thing isnt good enough... Only comes in black. I dont know if theres a flame top or nice plain top under there, but by God, if there is I might consider having it refinished in a good burst. I have a black guitar, and I wanna get something new and different that I can cherish and enjoy, right?
Well, anyways... Always in search of those killer sounds and cool techniques... Thanks again for all these great pictures Donnah! Sometimes they help me out, and they always inspire me! =)
Posted by: Ben at March 2, 2007 02:44 PMSounds like your sitting on the fence again Ben! Go search out your baby! Dont be in a hurry to grab a Paul. It will speak to you when you play the....right one! You are wavering to much this way and that. A black Les Paul...well, if you dont like the color, dont buy it. Why spend $100s of dollars on a new finish. When we all know that refinished Pauls are not worth near as much as original finished ones. Bottom line here: If you want a burst, buy a burst. Simple as that! Sounds like you got a case of Les Paul fever there Ben! Rein it in son and wait and get what you really want.
Posted by: Sheila Smith at March 2, 2007 07:44 PMpreach the patience, Shelia. you will know when it speaks to you, Ben. try not to mail order unless you have to.
Posted by: richard at March 4, 2007 10:07 AMI like my 57 ES 125 TD more than I do my 91 Goldtop..sry, but I do.
I paid three times as much for the GT. I bought the 57 last year.
I also bought an old Silvertone or something..it has no markings, but it is about a hunnert yar old, and it just bellows under pressure. I had to put screws in the neck joint to solidify it, it was moldy from a basement somewhere. Fired right up ! Instant vintage for 90 bucks, and a set of strings...*plus two wood screws*.
Ben, take your time...
check the paper..in the 'old retired guys selling guitars section', you'd be surprised what you'll find.
Posted by: csason at March 4, 2007 10:17 PMIm sure you could drop into any deep south cities or big rock cities and find those... (like that guy from Atlanta advertising his '82 Std on here before heh) but up here in the STICKS that doesnt happen much. Though I've thought up a plan thats too long to type...
Basically I found out I want something with Burstbucker V with Alnico V uneven wound pickups... LP Standard 50s and 60s necks come with them at the top of my budget and I just found out they come in nice bursts now (not just black)
So im gonna have em bring a 50s neck (iced tea) in to try if they accept my price, if they dont then i'll have em bring in a LP Classic in (Vint Sunburst or Honeyburst) to try at an even lower rate (cuz they cost less) But i'd still be very happy, they sound nice. I tried a Copper Classic (the one I thought was a gold top that got sold) and so I know it would be a nice backup if I cant get the 50s Neck within my budget.

Remarkable.. almost EXACTLY same ratings, see?
(Couldnt sleep the other night when I figured out that I could do this and get an incredible guitar that I want so much hah!)
And I cant sleep tonight waiting for the next pic, Donnah! =P
