Lots of ink being spilled over Gingrich's little newt:
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged he was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group."The honest answer is yes," Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson to be aired Friday, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."
Gingrich argued in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.
"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge," the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton's 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. "I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials."
Now on wife number three, his pattern seems to be marry, cheat, repeat.
He says he's waiting to see how the field shapes up before deciding to run for president, but it would seem rather pointless at this juncture. Besides, he'd just cheat on us with France.
Newt's affection for history and heritage appeals to me.. I certainly realte to the three wives thing, but I never messed around on them.
I'd bet the real reason Newt fell out with *his* women is more like mine, because I also relate to his anally obsessive side..
The *problem* with Ol Newt is .. He's the kind of guy who would just get pissed off at Iran, Syria and
the rest, and just melt them. He knows enough about
Presidential moves, that we would watch him just slide out to Camp David for a retreat right after...
He would certainly shut out *any* questioning or
*debate* regarding his policy, after all he's Newt Gingrich.. *grin*
Newt's got character issues. It's one thing that the fact that a guy has a problem zipper gets sprung on us once he's already in office, but when we know about it beforehand? No way I'd vote for Newt.
Posted by: Donnah at March 9, 2007 07:22 PMA lot of us knew that about the boy president who won two elections with less that a majority both times. I hear he's still quite popular with the ladies too and I'm not talking about his wife.
Newt does have infedelity issues but he also has idea's and vision, which almost all of the others running for president do not.
I'd surmise he's airing it early to make it 'old news' before it was sprung by others. At least he admitted it up front, whereas Hillery has yet to explain a lot about her past.
btw, I saw a killer bumper sticker the other day: "Reserect Goldwater for '08"

I agree with you on Newt's vision. I think I'd like a Giuliani-Newt ticket but I've always wondered about Gingrich's staying power. I felt that he folded up too easily when he was under fire in the past and that may also go to the character issue that Donnah is pointing at in her article.
Posted by: tfhr at March 11, 2007 08:58 AMGood points there tfhr ! Newt is a gifted man with intelligence , and a wonderful strategist who truly understands Conservatism. His only downfall is ....the personal character issue. As a country we have certainly been here before. I think his grip & understanding of world affairs would be beneficial to anyone in office though & we can certainly benefit from his experience.
