Like Thomas Edison said of my hometown, "There's only one Ft. Myers, and 90 million people are going to find out about it." That includes the special fellow who started a private nude cemetery in E. Ft. Myers:
Skeletal remains of eight people were found in southwest Florida woods, and investigators believe the bodies have been there for several years, police said. The skeletons, which had no skin or clothing, were found Friday in an unlit wooded area about 25 feet from an unpaved section of an east Fort Myers street, Fort Myers police Lt. Brian Phillips said.
Investigators were working to identify the bodies and were handling the deaths as homicides unless they find evidence to the contrary, police said. No trauma was evident, Phillips said.
An ecologist who was surveying a 10-acre lot for a developer discovered the bodies, police spokeswoman Shelly Flynn said. At first, police thought there were three skeletons, but a search turned up five more within a 50-yard radius, detectives said.
Police estimate the bodies have been in the woods for several years, but it was not yet known how they got there.
Technicians from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement collected physical evidence Friday, Flynn said. The skeletons will be taken to the medical examiner's office, where pathologists will try to determine a cause of death.
It's odd that it says the skeletons didn't have any skin. I kind of take it for granted that they don't. Or is it saying that this cemetery is ultra-nude?
Posted by floridacracker at March 24, 2007 07:24 PMmaybe they are saying that their should have been *some* skin evidence, and their wasn't.
I guess usually a *skeleton* found buried usually has nails, hair, etc..
this sounds like something people aren't going to like.
Posted by: csason at March 24, 2007 08:31 PMI wasn't sure, but it did sound like a strange extra bit of info for a news article.
So is this the "Florida Flayer"?
Posted by: Donnah at March 24, 2007 08:35 PMMr. Edison had it right though.. Ft. Myers has been hammered over the years..and I am talkin' since
the early days.
My Grandaddy was so proud of his parcel over there, and it was all under water. Now 41 runs right throught the middle of it... ;) too bad my greedy cousins snorted it all up.
Posted by: csason at March 25, 2007 06:26 AMMy "source" at the stockade says the inmates believe it is what they call "the Guato lotto"
where Guatemalans are robbed because they carry all their money. I don't think so because they didn't have any clothes on.
The other speculation is an unscrupulous funeral director. Which reminds me,
A while back, an elderly, black funeral director (in the MLKJr. area, ya know where I mean?) was discovered to have stacks of bodies stored at his business.
He wasn't unscrupulous, but overwhelmed with bodies and customers who didn't pay their bills. The families were the unscrupulous ones. Treating him like he did this for charity.
He was so bewildered.
Not long after, an 11 yr.old black student from my school died in a drowning accident.
I donated 300.$ just to be sure he could get cremated, if that's what they wanted to do.
They'd know pretty quick if these were Guats - they're so short and stocky.
An unscrupulous funeral director skins people for money, not for...skin.
I do remember the fd you're talking about. He'd been in business there forever and was put in a bad situation.
Posted by: Donnah at March 25, 2007 12:40 PM...can't wait to see the whole thing on Dr. G.
Posted by: leelu at March 25, 2007 07:50 PMDonnah, I'm not getting it.
Are you saying you think these eight people were skinned? like de-skinned, un-skinned, skin removed!?
...gotta make a note to myself...
never go into E. Ft. Myers again (:o
Read the previous comments, Nancy. Yes, we're talking about whether they had their pelts removed.
Posted by: Donnah at March 25, 2007 08:52 PMoh, is that what flayer means ?
I guess I couldn't wrap my brain around that idea.
I don't think so. That's too CSIish.
Next, you'll be saying lampshades were made from the skin...yea, like that could happen, right.
I can see removing the skin on the fingerpads to get rid of fingerprints; anything more though would just be craziness.
