I Want Your Sox

Man from Lone Sock State seeks mate:

A Belleville [Illinois] man whose hankering for women's hosiery has landed him in prison is in trouble again -- once more for his apparent lust for leggings.

St. Clair County prosecutors charged James Dowdy on Friday with felony attempted burglary for his uninvited visit of a parked car. He also was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct for dropping socks in a neighborhood where witnesses say they saw him slinking.

The 36-year-old Dowdy is jailed on $50,000 bond.

Dowdy has been sentenced to prison in 2004, 1997 and 1994 for various periods, all reportedly for burglary-related charges tied to his efforts to get women's socks.

Belleville police Captain Don Sax says there's been no evidence Dowdy is threatening, and that he seems to be only after women's socks.

I thought Hosiers were from Indiana? In any case, it's quite a yarn.

Not missing the "hosiers" pun, but here's a little story from my life experience, which is as valuable and precious as any other.

When I first moved to St. Louis I didn't get why people kept referring to others as "hoosier". I thought that was just Indiana. Turns out "hoosier" is "even more redneck than redneck" because people from the region figure they default at redneck, so needed a term for the next step.

I also heard from some old, old timer that it was an epithet (that still bristles, at least for this guy) for the very rural who were coming into the city to try to find jobs and were seen as a threat.

Ok, I'm done sharing.

That's very interesting, Marc. I like learning stuff like that. Where abouts are you in St. Louis, anyway? I've become a bit more familiar with it as of late.

OK - maybe I've been out of the loop for too long, but I always thought the goal was to "get in their PANTS".

For cryin' out loud, they keep changin' the darned rules on me.......

I live to the west. 141 and Olive, for the stalkerish. Since I'm right on the Olive corridor, it's typical strip malls and apartments, but go just a block or two off and it's very nice neighborhoods to country clubs and mansions. The kids at the high school on my way to my old job pretty much all had better cars than I could afford.

"He also was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct for **dropping socks** in a neighborhood where witnesses say they saw him slinking."

Wait, he's not a mere sicko. He genuinely finds happiness in socks and wants to share it with others. Is that so wrong?

Oh yeah, all that other, creepy burgler stuff.

This looks like an attempt to build on the thread dedicated to "Sparky the Wonder Pun Boy" of a month or so back. Sorry but it just doesn't have the legs.

Nah, I was just posting a funny, if warped, story. With so much crewelty in the news, I just wanted to offer y'all a warm fuzzy.

Nice effort but I feel that this is headed to farthest reaches of the dryer where the lint trap stops and socks vanish.

Darn it, why're you being such a heel about this? I got a kick out of this guy's wild and woolly antics and was trying to share. Stop needling me.

Posted by: Donnah at May 8, 2007 06:59 PM

The folks there are fortunate that the only drawers the guy was looming around had their socks in it.

I'm telling you this story has holes in it.

Posted by: tfhr at May 8, 2007 10:32 PM

Well, if the story starts unraveling I'll post an update. I've yet to hear your purls of wisdom on what exactly you think smells here.

Posted by: Donnah at May 8, 2007 11:16 PM

y'all are gonna stretch this one out too...unless somebody sticks their foot in it...like maybe I just did.

Ya'll can mill around this yarn for a while more,
but I got to weave for work.
You got me in stiches :)

"I've yet to hear your purls of wisdom on what exactly you think smells here."

-- And you won't either, I am not your sock puppet! ( He said defiantly ) By the way, this thread is hanging by a thread.
