Snarlin' Duane in Central Park.
Wail on, Skydog!
Good one Donnah! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Posted by: cindy at May 16, 2007 07:52 AMOh this is going into the competition for my fav..
That is Hot Lanta, and he is rippin it..
Thank you Donnah..!! NOW we know where SRV got his clothing ideas from..!! It WASN'T Jimi !!
Posted by: csason at May 16, 2007 08:41 AMIndeed, csason, Duane's face looks like what Howlin' Wolf can do with his voice -- rip!
Posted by: Paco Malo at May 16, 2007 09:54 AMAnd Donnah,
SRV's clothes are Texas originals. Thanks, as always.
Posted by: Paco Malo at May 16, 2007 09:59 AMWail On!
Posted by: richard at May 16, 2007 12:58 PMThis must be a face I make while listening to Duane rip it up. My 11 year old doesn't understand it yet but I'll keep playing the music if not for him, for me.
I always knew Duane couldn't play music like he did and not be feeling every note leave his body. These pictures confirm what I always knew. Keep the Faith, and Wail on!!
Posted by: Willard at May 16, 2007 02:29 PMGreat last paragraph, Willard.
Posted by: Paco Malo at May 16, 2007 03:49 PMAwesome pic Donnah, as always! Hey Paco! Did you ever see the picture of Duane with the SRV style hat on? I always wondered if that is where Stevie got his idea for the cool hat he always wore. There is a picture of Duane in a black hat and western outfit ala Stevie. It could have been a inspiration for Stevie, but there is probobaly no way to know. It had to have been taken 15 year or more before Stevie came on the scene. I know Donnah knows the pic Im talking about. I would post it here if I could. So many unsolved mysteries of who got what from where.
All I can say is Wail on Skydog! Rock on and have you a good time! :>
Because I love hanging out here, and I have too much time on my hands. I am currently home disabled with a spinal injury. My mobility is impaired. I dont know for how long, so I spend way too much on the net! I rounded up some great stories and quotes from our wailing man Duane Allman and will post them for you. So, here is another quote for the Duane Allman Notebook. Enjoy!
Duane Allman's personal philosophy of life was very simple and basic. He once said, "Everything's the same everywhere. There are nice folks, and a**holes, and you have to learn to distinguish between the two in order to get by. And someone who's an a**hole to somebody may be a nice folk to somebody else, so you've got to learn to be nice to everybody, and show everybody respect, that's the only way people respect you. You've got to have mutual respect and a little bit of love, if you can round it up. And don't be afraid to share what's inside of you with other people. That's the only way you're ever going to get free or have any fun all, either. So just rock on, and have you a good time. If I have a choice between having a good time and a sh***y time, I'm going to have me a good time. I've had enough sh***y times."
Paco! Didnt know if you had seen this picture of Duane in western gear with hat. I wanted you to see it so you can comment on it. Me, living in Texas and being a Stevie Ray Vaughn fan as well wanted you to see that maybe, just maybe this is where Stevie got the original idea of the western theme clothes he wore. Of, course Stevie had his own style. But, ole Duane could have been a inspiration for his dress. Paste this link and see what you think? It has been posted here on Florida Cracker by Donnah in the past. Heres the link:

Duane looks like he's pulling that note out of the devil's ass..if you don't mind me saying so !!
Wouldn't it be a bummer to hear Statesboro Blues, and then go to see DA live..and it was some guy
standing there emotionless, like Entwhistle ??
Another awesome one, Donnah! Thanks! =D
I always enjoy those good shots of the good notes, especially if you can see where hes playing (though its blurry so I cant even make out what he might be playing specifically..)
Its all great though! His hands n fingers could play mighty fast. B)
Sheila:
What kind of guitar and/or mandolin do you play?
Regarding the "chicken or the egg came first(?)" problem: Duane was a spiritual influence on SRV, far exceeding in importance issues of fashion. Duane's music directly influenced Stevie Ray's.
Posted by: Paco Malo at May 17, 2007 10:39 AMPaco, I would love to read about Stevie and Duane's influence on him! I have never read a article about it. Although, I always felt (spiritual)there had to have been a Duane influence in his playing.
Got any suggestions where I can find article(s)?
Paco, I have owned alot of guitars. Except a Gibson Les Paul. The Pauls are too heavy. I had a Epiphone Standard Paul at one time and a couple of other clones. But, they weigh to much to be comfortable for me to play. My favorite guitar was a 72 Gibson SG I ordered new from the Gibson Factory in 71 before Duane was killed. I am left handed, like Duane and Gregg but play lefty and had to wait 6 mos for the guitar to be delivered. I had to sell it a few years ago due to finiancial reasons. It is in England now. Owned by a guy who lives down the road from Paul McCartney. I still miss my SG!
Actually, I picked up the guitar because of (our Brother) Duane Allman. I heard "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" on late night radio and I had to start playing. When I got a copy of "Live at the Fillmore East", I Knew I was onto the Holy Grail of Guitar Greats! I play guitar, and a little mandolin. :>. I play a one of a kind Strat not Fender handmade and a PRS hollowbody copy. I have a Martin accoustic and a few others electrics and acoustics. I play through a line 6 amp.
I hope someday to get a lefty Gibson Studio Paul, I hear they are lighter. The Pauls are just too heavy for me. It would rock if I could get my hands around another Gibson SG! I miss that guitar! oh, well we all have regrets of guitars sold or traded we should have kept!
Check this out Sheila:
In a little hole-in-the-wall music shop near where my mother grew up 40min from me there was (prob still is) a '74 Walnut SG that seems all original save that we think it seems to have a replacement neck and my cousin (who was my guitar consultant before he went to serve the Marines) said the action and playing of it wasnt so great... however I beg to differ. I think it was MARVELOUS to play on, and SWEET to listen to. Must have had PAFs in it and the fretboard was easy to play and bend notes on. I think it had incredible action, and it was the best sounding guitar I've ever played, thx to those pickups. Especially smooth, bluesy mids and lows.
Was priced at $1800 last I checked and that was like 1-2 years ago.
If ya wanna come up and check it out, seriously, I can get you a deal on a hotel, I think.(my line of work) Flights are on your own =P
I'd like to own one of those treasured golden year Gibsons, but Im poor, could barely afford the cheap guitars. =P
Someday... right? =)
speaking of gitars....
The 74 probably has patent stickers, but seriously doubt the pafs..
But Ben, I found this vid..it is of PearlyGates. I was thinking of all the 58's, 59's and 60's that are hanging in mothballs or in a museum when I saw Billy doing this.. it is really awesome

Posted by: csason at May 18, 2007 05:23 AMThanks Ben! Oh yeah! That would definitely be sweet! But, alas my legs are bad. I mean right now I cant even walk. And I cant work so right now I have no income. So, going anywhere right now is out of the question. But, hopefully this will get better. I just have a lot of faith that it will. I dont know what state you are in, but maybe, who knows, sometime in the future I might take you up on it! That Gibson Sg was the best guitar I have owned. Ready for this? New in 1971 I paid $360.00 for the guitar, a 61 style Gibson Cherry SG Standard and $100.00 for the case. There was a 100.00 upcharge from Gibson for lefty even way back then. I had to wait 6 months for them to make it. The only other guitar I regretted traded was a 80s maple quilt Sg shaped lefty Carvin. It was a DC150. Man, that is a sweet guitar. Ben, I with ya man! Gibson prices are out of site, I cant afford it either. lol
But you have a awesome player in your Epiphone Plus. Its one beautiful instrument, I saw your pic! I checked out a Guitar Player review that compared a Gibson Custom shop Paul with a Epiphone Standard Paul. Basically they said the Epiphone Paul was just as good except for the pickups and thats a easy thing to remedy. That and the Gibson has a one piece body and the Epiphone is a 2 piece. Ben, really that isnt worth the $3500 diff in price. You gotta pay big bucks for the Gibson name these days...the older ones are better but they are even higher. But then again, a great guitarist can make a $100.00 guitar sing! So, its not the equipment, but the person playing. Rock on Ben, and have you a good time! And thanks!
( if you havent replaced the pickups yet, check out www.crcoils.com. Wagner pickups, the Fillmore Set. They have replicated Duanes pickups. They rock!
(The Wagner Fillmores...)
... OH MY GOD!! Thats INCREDIBLE!!!
But wheres the prices?? If they're same or not much more than Gibson LP Burstbucker V PAF style wound pickups then I'd seriously consider them for my new Epi as an upgrade. Was satisfied... but if I can get that beautiful sound I'd DEFINITELY upgrade when I get the money.
Thanks Sheila! =)
Hi Ben! $260.00 a pair (neck and bridge incl) Scroll down to bottom of the page on right side. check all the options available too at no extra charge. Burstbuckers run about the same $109.00 to $129.00 ea at musicians friend. So a pair of Wagners is bout the same. Check ebay too, a friend of mine got a used set of Wagners for $229.00. Man!, you get a set of those and you good to go for the best Duane tone out there! "Rock on and have a Good time!" Ben :>

Beautiful, you are someone special.
I will look for a good article discussing Skydog's influence on SRV for you -- how should I send it, post it here some Wednesday?
My first guitar was a big Yahama acoustic, my second was a maple body '76 Telecaster.
(Paco) Jim
Thank you Paco! You are so kind! As far as my first guitar? It was a $59.99 K-mart strat copy. My second was a used Ovation Balladeer 6 string. Both strung lefty! but were right handed. I love this site! Y'all rock! I would love to find out about the SRV connection! I dont know if I should post my email address here or not? I dont know how to get it to ya? I dont know how Donnah feels about posting email addresses here or if that would be a safe thing. Tell you what, I have a email address I hardly use. Email me there and I will send my real email address to you, Paco. petmiceala@aol.com I just opened it to comment on aol news comments. Looking forward to hearing from ya!
Posted by: Sheila at May 20, 2007 04:46 PMThanks Sheila! I'll probably start saving up to get em! =)
Do they have replicas of his Goldtop/Plaintop pickups? I actually like those better (deep bluesy sounds over burnin hot) but the sounds of Hot 'Lanta will be excellent!
Thanks again!

Posted by: Paco Malo at May 21, 2007 12:42 PMThanks Jim!(Paco)will do!
Ben, just check out the site. there are the crossroads set and the darkburst set (duplicated pups from Duanes last guitar) and Jim Wagner will custom make pups as well. They say he is easy to talk to and he would know more about how the goldtop pickups sound. He can make em Im sure. Good luck, and I think they are excellent pups. They are expensive, but not much more than Gibson pups. I wish I owned a set of em.
Posted by: Sheila at May 21, 2007 04:59 PMYea.. Im just torn between which sound I want!! >_<
But I'll make a final decision in the future. All I know is I WILL get a set of them pickups. I just hope its soon, what with goin for a new/better job in which I could afford to spend on that then start putting money aside for other things after.
But... them 'fillmore set' pickups... MAN ya just cant beat that awesome ripping lead sound. Right now Im leaning towards a set of those to put in my Epi. Just gotta email him on if I can, cuz its prob less dense wood, not solid 1 piece like Gibsons. (He has a note in there that dense wood = low gain pickups, softer wood = higher gain pickups as a rule of thumb)
Well I'll be excited either way it happens.
Just hope its soon!
Oh and we'll be having another good Duane pic soon too! =)
