A huge creature carrying a shell dropped by our kitchen today. That shell must be heavy -- heavy enough to give that poor reptile what looks to be a raging 'rhoid:

She's about to bust trying to find a place to lay that clutch...
mmmm mmm good.. That's what Durwood would say.
Posted by: csason at May 25, 2007 07:38 PMYeah, she was digging like mad. Know what kind of turtle or tortoise that is? It's the biggest one I've seen outside of an aquarium. I'm used to box turtles.
Posted by: Donnah at May 25, 2007 08:00 PMDoes this help? http://pelotes.jea.com/AnimalFact/Reptile/softturt.htm
Posted by: john at May 25, 2007 09:58 PMomg, Donnah you need a spankin'
That is a softshell turtle, and you can get twenty bucks for that Mama in some parts of town.
She was trying to find a nice place for a nest.
Wherever she put them you will have little softies in a few weeks, you must have some water nearby.
Did you see my Osprey ??
My Dad loved softshell turtle..that's who Durwood was.

Posted by: csason at May 26, 2007 06:44 AMThank you, John.
I wrote to Eric of "Empire of the Turtles," and he also gave me an ID without telling me to spank myself.

I wasn't expecting the thing to be so damn huge!
About being near water, we live on a lake.
Your osprey's very cool, Owen.
We get odd critters back in that spot. A few months ago it was a little burrowing owl. It was eating a full-grown blue jay. Ate the whole thing too.
