Looks like we're at war with... Guyana:
According to NewsChannel4's Jonathan Dienst, sources said federal investigators have made arrests in an alleged terror plot on Kennedy Airport.Four people have been charged. One is in custody in New York. Three suspects are thought to be overseas.
Sources said one suspect is thought to be a former parliament or government official in Guyana.
Sources said the plot involved a plan to blow up a jet-fuel pipeline at JFK setting off a potential massive explosion.
Law enforcement officials said the plot may involve a former airport worker.
A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. this afternoon.
I don't see what the beef could be, but I imagine we'll find out shortly. According to MSNBC, three people have now been arrested.
Guyana, if we shortchanged you on bauxite, sorry; an idiot nephew dropped the scale last week and we haven't had time to get it recalibrated.
UPDATE:
Oh dear, "a very angry Muslim extremist" and "al Qaeda wannabes." Shocking.
Gee, these seem to be Tim Blair's unidentified people. I wonder what the common denominator in this and all the other homegrown plots could be?
Probably Republicans.

Posted by: marybeth at June 2, 2007 05:04 PMI know! My jaw just *dropped*.
Posted by: Donnah at June 2, 2007 05:46 PMDon't you think it's time we figured out how to stop provoking these people, and learned to embrace their cultural differnces?
Posted by: rg at June 2, 2007 09:11 PM'rg' forgot the sarcasm tags (I hope).
I think: "how can I embrace their cultural differences?" And I find myself rejecting the "cultural" characteristics of blowing other people and myself (and nearly everything else) up.
I was listening carefully to the recorded plot points the Muslims involved in this attempted airport-blowup, as they were broadcast and rebroadcast on television earlier today (although I had to continue to MUTE Geraldo Rivera's ebullience in between the videos), and the assumption (by these Muslims) was that the Kennedy Airport being destroyed would then destroy America and New York, too.
Not to make light of any of this, but these people are grossly misled. It's as if they have an entirely made-up, fantasied notion of what "America" and us "Americans" actually are, and then are besetting those fantasies.
Which isn't an indication of "cultural differences" but of mental illness. Truly, these are mentally ill people, moreso than most of us in the U.S. are aware of or willing to believe. There's nothing "we" can do to "get along with" people like that, we just have to isolate them and then take remedial steps (various) afterward.
But there isn't any coexistence with that degree of mental aberration possible. Especially when the mentally aberrated think it's a worthy thing to be blown up, to blow up others, to generally destroy and be destroyed.
Note that the key player (Guayana guy) has a daugher who "utterly rejects" the actual (recorded) statements of her father...Guayana guy is one astute misleader (as in, he has a criminal mind, he's not eager to get along with much of anyone who isn't in service to his criminal intents). Children who are so unbelieving of a parent who all the while maintains the polar opposite of existence than they ever expect he's/she's capable of, well, that shows real and careful planning to mislead and worse.
Not like Guayana guy sounds like anyone who'd be reliable for much of anything social, as in, ever, in the U.S. This is one fellow who needs to be isolated permanently from our society and I venture to guess there are many others like him with his "shared values" here and elsewhere.
Posted by: -S- at June 2, 2007 11:46 PMTake the "religious" tags and associations out of this issue, these events, and you get Guayana guy who sounds very much like all serial killers: he's the employee/parent/neighbor no one would EVER expect to be THAT way, the last one anyone ever suspects, the guy that those who know him find impossible to believe would ever REALLY do THAT.
As in, criminal mind at work: Guayana guy. That he's Muslim sounds moreso like he just found some convenient associations to his criminal intents, unfortunately for the Muslims who are nonviolent (though it's getting more difficult with passing time to believe that they actually exist, that their reason to group as one isn't based upon intents to destroy themselves and others -- I'd welcome news to the contrary but the evidence continues to mount that their purpose as an organizational point is based upon destruction of life).
Posted by: -S- at June 2, 2007 11:52 PMI do so like it when they point out the weaknesses in out infrastructures with these plots. Hopefully we will be able to continue aprehending them before they are carried out.
As for Guayana guy and Muslims...
Can you say "Total world domination"?
I knew you could...
Muslims, all Muslims, have this as their stated goal as laid out in the Quran. The bottom line with their religion is you're with us or you're not. Those that are not are treated accordingly.
Posted by: Gmac at June 3, 2007 06:42 AMS,
Do you really think it is worthwhile to find an excuse for this guy
"..That he's Muslim sounds moreso like he just found some convenient associations to his criminal intents, unfortunately for the Muslims who are nonviolent.."
If three guys are breaking into your house because the cleaning lady told them about your gun collection, is it really important that two of them are anti-gun protestors, and the third is just hungry ?
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck..there is a good chance it's a duck.
While everyone contemplates the inner workings of this/these individual's brain functions..I think of all the motel and convenience store owners I have met who hate us, and run their mouth about it
all the time. That being said, it is just a matter of time before one of these 'quiet types' with 'criminal leanings' uses their Muslim status to clean another few thousand American clocks.
It just so happens I have pro-American leanings and I want ALL of them to leave, and many want the same thing. Fuck Islam.
Posted by: csason at June 3, 2007 09:02 AMAs a follow up to my previous comment, I did some thinking about what we can to avoid provoking fundamentalist Muslims and how we can learn to embrace their culture. I came to the following conclusion:
Nu Finish Car Polish is really an excellent product which lives up to its claims. It really is the "once a year car polish". It goes on easily with no rubbing or tiresome buffing. I just finished doing my new glossy black truck -- and now it's glossier and blacker than ever! Available in paste or liquid at fine retailers like WalMart or Canadian Tire for less than $10. Tell 'em Ray sent ya!
While -S-'s comments are well-considered, I think that's the problem. These kooks don't merit such deep analysis -- at least not by a tax-paying civilian like me. In Canada we have professionals we pay like CSIS, the RCMP, and the snipers of The Canadian Airborne Regiment to work out the psychology and motivations of anyone who threatens our security. Likewise in the US, you pay good money to experts who can deal with these sorts of problems, and they know what they're doing. We don't need to be armchair intelligence analysts. All I know is that terrorists are crazier than a shithouse rat, and I want them out of my yard. In a box, if necessary. I don't need to know what some guy named Khalid from Berzerkistan had for his afternoon tea. He's meshugana, that's all, and should be dealt with as such.
I sympathise more with csason's view, to an extent. I have pro-American leanings, too. If it comes down to deciding between a foaming-at-the-mouth radical Muslim, or a friendly bunch of people to the south, who's greatest crime is encouraging me to eat too many ribs at their barbeque (hint-hint), guess who's side I'm on?
However, I don't ascribe terrorists' loony actions to their particular religion, necessarily. Jim Jones wasn't a Muslim, and being craaaaaazy doesn't distinguish. Of course I acknowledge that most of the terrorism going on these days uses Islam as a pretext, and that bears looking into. I'll leave that to the pros. I'm just a regular guy, and I deal with individuals.
If you really want an insight as to what makes these people tick, I recommend the Joseph Conrad classic story, "The Secret Agent". The movie, starring Bob Hoskins and Robin Williams is also excellent. Terrorists are really just pathetic little people who want to hurt us. That's all I need to know. If you are in the business of aprehending them, you may find it useful to go a little deeper. But since I already have a job, I'll let those who are better-qualified do theirs.
And remember, Nu Finish Car Polish, in the happy orange bottle -- try it, you won't be dissappointed!

Well, I DID write this in conclusion earlier as to Muslims:
"...the evidence continues to mount that their purpose as an organizational point is based upon destruction of life."
I meant by that that the principles upon which they organize (as a "religion", as a society) is fundamentally, essentially based upon destruction of life.
Sorry if I offend anyone reading this but it's difficult to continue to try to find some excuse or rationalization for this very startling and disturbing aspect to their "religion" and what it intends for others (and also them, given that they value death over life as a tenet of their religious belief).
