It's not too often you get to see a man have a nice faint. In this video, erstwhile New Mexico police officer Malcolm Martinez does an outstanding swoon, collapsing to the courtroom floor in a jail-clothes-clad heap upon a judge's announcing he'd be spending the next 36 years of his life in state prison for robbing stores while in full uniform. This was a plea deal though, so was Martinez: a.) stunned that he was being sentenced to the max, b.) overwhelmed that he'd ruined his life for $10,000 bucks and was going to spend the rest of his days with cop-hating convicts, c.) overwhelmed with self-loathing and remorse that he'd betrayed the public's trust, or d.) blood-sugar woozy from those syrupy pancakes he had at his pre-sentencing breakfast?
In any case, it's a very exciting moment and one I'm glad he shared with us.
'Scuse me while I examine my new social standing from a better perspective...ground level.
I'm screwed, literaly and figurativly now that I'm on the bottom rung of Big House society...
You really have to wonder wth motivated him to do something that stupid.
I'd almost feel sorry for him, if he wasn't sworn to uphold the laws he violated and it seems the judge had the same inclinations.
That looked so fake to me,
but that is a lot of time for 10,000 $
police officer or not.
Ya know, I bet there's been much more shit he's never got caught for.
By any chance, was he previously from New Orleans?
Another article about him says he was from New Mexico and that he was behind 17 burglaries but only charged with three of them. If he had been charged with all 17 he could have gotten more than 150 years in prison.
Posted by: marybeth at June 21, 2007 04:56 PMMost judges hate the crying and fainting stuff. After all if you have nads big enough to steal out of a Katrina jar..you shouldn't be bothered too much about 36 years..of which he will do about 12.
Judges Raiden in the 10th circuit has a standing max sentence for whimpering/crying/fainting.
He must have thought the courtroom was an extension of the dress rehearsal cop job he had. On the other hand-being unconscious might not be a bad way for him to spend the next couple years.. in fact he may not have a choice in the matter.
Posted by: csason at June 22, 2007 09:03 AMI don't think Martinez is the only one eating too many pancakes. The judge looks pretty porky, and the bailiff is a heifer.
Did they revive him with grits?
