He came to pick, not to wear fancy duds.
Another of Duane all decked out in Piedmont Park, Atlanta, in September of 1970.
Wail on, Skydog!
If Mr. Trucks stops by today, I have a question: What's the biggest myth you run into about the Allman Brothers Band?
As always, thanks Donnah.
Posted by: Paco Malo at August 22, 2007 05:01 AM Is STP still being made? I haven't heard (or thought) about it for years!
Point of order: Piedmont Park is here in Atlanta. They played there a lot in the early days. For free.
This is a shot I've never seen before. Thanks as always.

Posted by: csason at August 22, 2007 06:25 AMyes they still make STP..but my real reason for double-dipping is 'I thought that guitar looked funny'.. that's Dickey's old Goldie ! isn't it?
I had a shirt just like that.. but I put STP in a noisy engine once, and it blew the motor..
Posted by: csason at August 22, 2007 06:40 AMWhich formulation of STP "blew the motor"?
Posted by: Paco Malo at August 22, 2007 04:36 PMWell thats the 57 Goldtop which was the donor for the Plaintops pickups... Did Duane give it to Dickey after doing that? Duane experimented with open coils for sound on that guitar, so it's not a different one. At least I dont think.
Very nice pic Donnah, I've never seen this one before, either!
Just got my Allman Brothers Live concert from when I went and saw them play up here. It's a GREAT set. Only regrets: they didnt play Stormy Monday, Dreams, Dont Keep Me Wonderin or Whippin Post and any of them would have done instead of the Van Morrison they covered and stuff... Overall was still a stellar performance and I'll cherish it forever.
Set list was;
Les Bres(GREAT), Aint Wastin Time, Every Hungry Woman, Gilded Splinters, Maydell, Soulshine, Southbound, Desdemona(EXCELLENT), It Stoned Me(insert Stormy here =P), Whos Been Talkin(..Dreams here), Statesboro Blues (AWESOME), Black Hearted Woman (INCREDIBLE), JaBuMa, Black Hearted Woman Reprise, Jessica, Encore: Melissa then One Way Out(SWEET)
Was almost a 3 hour concert. I cant wait til next year to see them again...
And rock on and have me a good time! =D
Rumor has is that they developed STP to put in the tanks that were burning up in the deserts of Africa during WWII and they found that straight STP worked fine. Duane was sporty with an actual T-shirt with STP on it. Us po folks only had the stickers for our school books to make us cool. Let's bring back the STP stickers!
Posted by: Gene Hardage at August 22, 2007 05:16 PMlol @ Slim... I guess those old T shirts were rare.
I was using regular ol STP (added to a fresh oil change) on that motor, it just couldn't handle it.
This can't be the donor GT, Ben..that was done years before, and that fiddle sold in Orlando about a year ago for 750k.
Posted by: csason at August 22, 2007 10:05 PMIs that the same goldtop geetar that was all busted up in multiple places and put back together? We were allowed to use the Whitfeild warehouse to rehearse in about 20sumthin years ago and it was sitting there along with all kinds of weird equipment with stencels on the cases like Cher - Atlanta Rhythm Section - Leon Russell - it's like everybody just left all kinds of equipment all over the place.
Posted by: Gene Hardage at August 23, 2007 03:43 PMSlim..(hope you dont mind me callin you Slim..;) that sounds like an Ebayer's dream..
All I am relying on for info about Goldtops and this pic is that the original Goldtop that DA traded for his first Burst (the dark one) was sold about a year ago in Orlando, it was the one that got the pickups switched out.
The guitar in this pic, I believe is Dickey's, from at least 4 years after that trade. It also has the red tinge (and I am colorblind) that prompted him to have it refinished red (then later converted to a burst..)
Then again..I could be making all this up !!!
Do you still have your junior ??? Where are you playing next ??
Posted by: csason at August 24, 2007 01:41 PMIm talkin about this photo of Duane with a goldtop.
http://www.mphase.com/hotpix_duanegoldtop.htm
...is that a different guitar than what we see in Love Valley video or in Atlanta Pop Fest pictures and what not, or the same with the covers removed like I thought? Cuz the 750k Goldtop has a gold switch ring and macncheese yellow switch tip and the Love Valley shots show them cream/white.
So Im guessing there were 2 goldtops, definitely. There arent any/many pictures of the one he would have given Dickey around, though. Or you'd argue that ones in certain shots are/aren't it.
Also stumbled on the Les Paul forum talkin about Duanes goldtop and the 750k sale.

A must read to learn about Duanes guitar history.
And if I had a million dollars... I'd definitly buy any of those guitars I could and probably find a way to long-term lend them to Derek or somethin. Especially with the SG, like they said in the forum... and only for the price of letting me at least meet them, if not jam with them time-to-time. Thats my ULTIMATE dream, a jam with the ABB as it is. (cant go back to '71, thats the ultimate fantasy)
Enjoy the forum and learn about Duanes guitars.
Have a great weekend everyone!
