Panning out, the gentleman in the beconchoed Hi-Roller looks to be frequent guest Thom Doucette:

Thanks to our own Carl the sleuth for tracking these down for us to enjoy:

Attached for your collection are three shots of the ABB playing in the Doremus Gymnasium at Washington and Lee University, in Lexington Virginia in either late 1970 or early 1971. For years I've been trying to remember exactly when the ABB played that concert at my alma mater; I still don't have an exact date, but I believe it was in early March 1971 and that the ABB was the featured band for W&L's 1970-71 academic year Fancy Dress Ball, an annual tradition going back 101 years at the school. I do remember being there and standing in front of DA, down and a bit to his right. The attached 'open mouth' photo captures my memory of him exactly.

Somewhere along the way I lost my 1970-71 Yearbook, but did remember who the school photographer was during my day and was able to get in touch with him; He said he's lost the negatives of these shots, but was able to point me to the right yearbook and page numbers in the yearbook.

I contacted the W&L library and had them scan the attached shots.

Thanks again, Carl. You're a peach.

According to W&L, they're listed as playing at the 1970 FDB, Carl. It's not even in the ABB database. Pretty neat. You remember a partial set list? We could add it:

I saw that listing showing them as the featured band for the 1970 Fancy Dress Ball at W&L, but I'm still not sure it was a 1970 concert date because I believe that Fancy Dress is usually a March event and I'm thinking this concert was in March 1970, not March 1971. Maybe my confusion stems (in part) from the fact that schools go by academic years (69-70 = 1969?; 70-71= 1970?).

On the other hand, maybe I've just lost a year in there somewhere... .

BTW Cracker, if you ever want a part-time job as a copy editor and don't mind editing legalese, let me know; you're very good at it!

First, despite his prowess with a Gibson and a Coricidin bottle, Duane doesn't know how to hold a basketball.

Second: last week Donnah gave us a link to a YouTube presentation of an slightly edited version of "Jam V" from "The Layla Sessions". At the end the 10 minute version of "Jam V" in this YouTube presentation is an array of cool Duane musical clips. Check it out at the link under last week's Duane pic or at the post I did on it at

Thanks for the referral Donnah.

Score !!! Two points..!!

This little ol website down in Cracker country is destined to become the depository of all things Skydog, Donnah...

If I was you, I'd put this baby up for sale on Ebay as part of your will, unless you have a youngin in mind to leave it to. It would fetch a handsome price...probably from some guy in Japan.

My thanks to you, Carl..(most especially) and Doucette..

Hey Paco, looks to me like with the right coach,
Duane could have easily palmed that bad boy.

Well Yesterday was my birthday..I turned mumble mumble.. As a treat, my 87 year old Mama gave me a
whole shoebox full of pictures..and I'd like to share one with y'all.

That is my first store bought guitar, my real first guitar was a Tampa nugget, and a yardstick..with rubber band strings

csason, great ax.

I agree that Duane probably could have been great with a basketball, but, as we all are, I'm glad he devoted his energy to music.

That looks like a vintage Wilson leather basketball, vintage 1968 and authentic cow hide leather. I believe if Duane had played B-ball his naturl position would have been the "high" post. With that hair, the coach never would've let him play.

You know something weird.. I played with a real leather b ball in high school..and my coach gave me one to take home.. They had a suede appearance.

That ball looks glossy..and why would they be throwing a basketball back and forth ?? It looks gay. Donnah, I'll bet the next time you get a chance to ask Thom Doucette..that is a medicine ball they were throwing.
That would explain why he is holding it funny, but not if it IS a ten or fifteen medicine ball.
And it makes sense inside a room with a low ceiling.

Discounting the "gay" factor, speaking as a former high school basketball manager, that gloss is caused by basketball wax. We used to wash the balls with leather soap, then dress them after they had dried with Wilson basketball wax to insure their long life. That particular ball looks as if it has been abused as the leather is peeling off the rubber.

Willard-

Curses..foiled again.

Well I played JV Bball at Manatee High School..and ours were pigskin..but they were suede-like..

Anyway..Regards ,CSASON
