Duane's hand is moving so fast, it's just a blur. Or something like that.

Great pic! Love the old school basketball scoreboard on the wall.

His hand was sort of like his life..so fast it was
like a blur. Great photos..I presume this is from the Carl series. Great shot showing Dickey's Goldtop, too !!

Thanks Donnah. Happy Valentines Day !!

I just noticed there's a HAT lying on the floor, left foreground.

OK Allmanologists: whose is it?

Posted by: Carl in atlanta at February 14, 2008 06:37 AM

I believe that would be Dicky Bett's hat.

If we weren't talking about Duane's left hand, I'd write that blur in photograph two off to a low grade camera or difficult lighting conditions. But having listened to some of Duane's fastest slide licks, I'll state that his prowess boggles both my ear and my eye. Conclusion: great photo. Wail on, indeed!

It almost appears that they were using that clock. Otherwise I think the hands would be straight up at zero. I wonder if they're playing 20 minute sets?

Aw, great pic again, Donnah!

This is the 'before they swapped sides' era, right? (Stony Brook has Duane on the right)

I like the scoreboard, too. Ya I bet they might be using it to time off sets. Neat.

And yep, thats Dickeys hat. (Dont know how it got over there tho... perhaps he dropped it on the floor between them 2, and Duane accidentally kicked it at a climactic crescendo?)

What a crowded lookin stage, huh?? This would be one of my lesser favorite venues for stage room. The Allman Brothers always spread it out and fill the air with sounds that carry.

Based on the hand position (8th fret with the slide), I think hes playing Done Somebody Wrong (open E tuning in key of C) That also looks a lot like his Cherryburst, which baffles me, since Dickey has his Goldtop he got when he sold Duane the SG for playing slide songs. Huh...
Any thoughts?

..Just thought of something...
Duane whips out the slide for the latter half of Mtn Jam (played in std tuning) and it would be somewhere around where his fingers are, so thats a possibility, and I take back my original thought where Duane is playing the old Cherryburst... note the Marshall amp heads behind Duane and Berry... this is post Fillmore 71. Duane is probably playing on Hot 'Lanta, std tuning, maybe Mtn Jam.

...This brings a question to my mind... Anyone know if Duane still used the Cherryburst after getting the SG and Hot 'Lanta? Its my all-time favorite guitar (things just so mellow), and he loved those pickups.. maybe take it out on a few 'old songs' like Dreams? We'd need photographic proof of some late concerts, post-Fillmore 71 with the Cherryburst.

You're hurting my head Ben..but it's a good hurt.

XD I can have a dizzying thought process. But I just really like being correct, and Im way into guitar gear.
I just like to hear in my head what it would sound like, and that depends on what gear and song/note they are playing.
|,,|. (>_<) .|,,|

Have fun jams with my dad time to time; we play all the Allman Brothers we know... slide and otherwise. I try my best, and do satisfactory on some, but I need sooooo much work. At least I have the right sound going. Those Fillmore pickups and a Vox tube amp. Saaawweeeeeet!
(might get a webcam to record myself playing..)

Wailin On, like our great Skydog,
Ben

Actually, looks to me like key o' B - check Dickey. Maybe Not My Cross To Bear?

Posted by: mike at February 18, 2008 01:05 PM

Ben, hate to tell ya, but Duane played through 2 50 watt fender bass amps, not a vox! The vox was much earlier. Since you seem to be a gearhead, thought you might want to know.
