Duane getting some guitar notes from the vending machine.
This must be were he got them as Layla producer Tom Down said he played "notes that aren't on the instrument."
Wail on, Skydog!
"Lemme borrow a quarter, I need a E minor 7th here, it's extra."
Posted by: Paco Malo at July 23, 2008 05:33 PM"Open E tuning's gone all the way up to .75 cents."
Posted by: Donnah at July 23, 2008 05:47 PM"Jeepers creepers, where's my autoharp?"
Posted by: Paco Malo at July 23, 2008 07:23 PM"Dickey took the last damn G7."
Posted by: Donnah at July 23, 2008 09:15 PMTom Dowd would have been proud of this picture. Nothing beats the sound of a Les Paul through a cranked 100 Watt Marshall. Wail on, for sure.
Posted by: mike at July 23, 2008 09:49 PMYes, but Dickey's had the 100 proof..
Duane was hooked on V-50.
What WAS Gregg doing..picking up a dropped quarter ??
Thanks again Donnah...you're a peach!!
Posted by: csason at July 23, 2008 10:30 PMI spoke with Tom several times at our all-year high school reunions..... Nice guy. Sweet as pie. Loved the brothers.
Posted by: mike the bike at July 23, 2008 10:45 PMM the B, that makes me jealous. Not as jealous as I am of Carl in Atlanta for getting to pat Traveler on the head in between disinterment and reburial, but pretty damn jealous nonetheless.
Posted by: Donnah at July 23, 2008 11:05 PMGregg's not fishing around for a dropped quarter. He's trying to get out of sight because he doesn't want Donnah to use the Gregg-Be-Gone on him! Cause he knows she often does, cause he ain't the one that puts the fizz in the champagne, the rev in the engine and the waves in the water bed!
Posted by: Little Starla at July 23, 2008 11:18 PMLOL. It's so true. Duane's the mack daddy.
Posted by: Donnah at July 23, 2008 11:22 PMRe: Marshalls, Mike and Owen:
In DC I was taught to call them "regged out Marshall cases." Is that correct?
Re: Tom Dowd, you must see, ASAP, a 1993 documentary "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music". See: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343107/
Let me know if you have any trouble finding this. It allows almost anyone, Abba fans welcome, to understand just how important Dowd is. And for us, it's a gas, gas , gas!
Posted by: Paco Malo at July 24, 2008 04:59 AMYep, he's the cream in the coffee, the twist in the pretzel, the sugar on the doughnut and the hum in the hummingbird.
Hey, we could start a Kute Kliches Kontest here. :)
Far Out!
Posted by: Mockinbird at July 24, 2008 09:25 AMIs that Dickey in the background checking to see what the Master's choice would be? If I was Dickey, I should would have tried to "cheat a peek" to see exactly how it was done. Donnah, you are a Peach! (thanks csason, an absolutely perfect adjective!) I think she must be (as per Duane) "the two legged kind"! LOL ;)
Paco....we need some poetry.....I'll expect something special next week. Oh and Gregg was averting his eyes 'cause he knew Duane was the Mack Daddy and he wasn't about to loan him a quarter! (Cheap B*****d)
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at July 24, 2008 11:06 AMNow we know why the song.."Somebody loan me a Dime"
came to be..
That's Gregg all right: perrennially and permanently without the correct change!
Posted by: Little Starla at July 24, 2008 01:53 PMI love brother Duane, but lets give ole Gregg his due...without his soulful voice that ABB revolution may have never took off. Remember Duane called his little Bro to sing in the band and told him no one else could fill the bill. Granted the ABB was formed to be a platform for Duane's guitar but lets get real, little brother was able to keep the band together after the sad losses of both Big Bro Duane and bro Berry. And he is still rockin keepin the flame burning after nearly 40 years...Wail on Skydog and little Brother Gregg. I bet Duane grins in heaven each time he hears them play. And its a miracle Gregg was able to boot his demons too.
Wail on Skydog n the Allman Brother Band, past and present!
Oops! Left something out. Remember too Gregg wrote Dreams, Whipping Post and too many other signature songs to mention. Duane was a hell of the guitar player the best ever lived. But, he wasnt a writer..It takes more than one smokin guitar to make a band. Even if the band leader was the Great Duane Allman.
Posted by: rememberingduane at July 25, 2008 03:55 AMDonnah is as perty as a Georgia Peach -- fresh from the tree! CSason, a nickname is born.
Thanks Donnah, you peach you!
Posted by: Paco Malo at July 25, 2008 08:48 AMWe love Gregg also 'remembering', but he will always
have a special place in our hearts...You're right, he wrote some great songs.. Come and Go Blues..
He shouldn't have turned state's evidence to save his own ass...plain and simple. A lot of the old die hards still remember, and if Duane were alive, Gregg wouldn't have done it.
Posted by: csason at July 25, 2008 09:59 AMDang csason, you have got it goin' on this week! You give us our new nickname for our wonderful host and you have the perfect explanation for our Gregg aversion. Gregg Allman: great vocalist, great songwriter and ass saving narc. Does that about cover it? ;) Oh yea, also baby brother to the greatest guitarist to ever play a note.....our own Howard Duane Allman!
Wail on, Skydog! And once again thanks to Ms. Peachy!
Posted by: cindy at July 25, 2008 10:48 AMI dunno why, but that name Howard really bothers me. It just doesn't fit him! Not at all. Why didn't they just make it the middle name in the first place?
Posted by: Little Starla at July 25, 2008 01:36 PMcome on let bygones be bygone! They were all using illegal drugs at that time. Heck Duane even Od'ed a couple of times and nearly died.
Drugs are bad news...right or wrong, Im not hear to judge...We dont know what turn Duanes demons would have takin if he would have lived. He used massive amounts of drugs..they all did.
No matter who is using or selling its all bad for the body and the music and especially the spirit!
Lets celebrate their lives and their contributions to music; which was massive. Got me playing blues way back when Duane was alive.
Drugs in the end kill the creative spark and cause nothing but grief no matter how you slice it. They cause brothers to become enemies.
To me get a guitar, tune to open e and wail, that all the drugs anyone should need. If you cant play listen and support the band and their music.
Wail on everybody... no one should harbor bad feelings after all these years.. Remember, judge lest ye be judged..God bless y'all!
*shrugs, waves dismissively* I wasn't holding that particular bit of mischief against Baby Brother. I didn't even know what it was all about till I looked it up. lol I was using much more shallow and probably hormone driven criteria when I picked my favorite brother. :)
Somebody *always* turns state's evidence anyway. It doesn't really matter which one as long as you personally (the interested observer?) happen to be the one who feels you got a raw deal. And somebody *always* feels like they got screwed. That is the normal human condition.
rd,
I'm not at all a Gregg hater..and I guess I agree
pretty much with your take on the drugs thing, especially since now it's a given if they offer a deal- EVERYBODY seems to take it..
I guess some of us still remember when participation
in such things didn't preclude at least having some sense of 'honor amongst thieves'.
I know a full on psychiatrist in Tampa for nearly
20 years, and besides the faint hint of tracks on her sweet little arms, the only way you can tell she was a junkie tramp living in a van in L.A. is her intense hate of 'stoolies'.
All that being said, I admire Gregg a great deal, and have seen him in concert a couple times, and play a few of his songs.
btw, there was more to my statement about Gregg's
behavior prior to and after Duane's death than one might guess at first..it's a bitch losing someone very close to you, people do some funny things.
And don't forget that Duane wouldn't join Clapton's band unless they took his brother too. Whatever they did wrong, they were in it together. No excuse for what Gregg did, but after all that was 30 years ago.
Posted by: MJalfie at July 30, 2008 06:04 PMThat's not true. Duane just told him he had his own stuff going on.
