Dibs on one of those front-row seats.
Wail on, Skydog!

Same pic after a spritz of GBG. See how much clearer it is?
Looks like a hot little combo...with or without the
Gregg fella...but I prefer it with Gregg, to be honest..
Not much takes away from Duane..I hardly noticed him until you mentioned it.
Posted by: csason at August 7, 2008 02:44 AMMan, that looks a LOT like the litle "stage in the woods" set-up they had at the 1970 Byron Pop Fesival! To get there you had to walk to the left (West) side of the main stage (to the left, as you faced the main stage; then past the "OD" tent, which was about 60 yards to the northwest of the main stage, then continue north down a trail/ dirt road through a "forest" of large planted pine trees to a communal soup line set up on the left-hand side of the trail[actually they were serving some kind of thick gruel there, an oatmeal-based slop with various chunks of various somethings in it; I'll never forget the server repeating to everyone in the queue, as we shuffled through, "Put your scraps back in the pot when you're done...Put your scraps back in the pot when you're done... Save some for everybody else..." ]; then continue in a generally northly direction along the trail (another 100-150 yards or so) to a small stage set up in a little clearing among the pines. It backed up to, and was surrounded on three sides by, the base of a heavily-eroded red clay bank or low hill of some kind, with lots of little red clay "gullies" or mini-canyons at it's base. There were maybe 300-400 people gathered there in front of the stage. It was dark and late (2am?3 am? Who knows?). And there on the stage was the ABB, jamming and jamming, sounding more like the Grateful Dead than Mountain Jam. I remember they were jamming like this as we approached, because we couldn't figure out who was playing until we got close enough to see. They continued for a long while as we stayed to watch and listen, and they were still jamming as we decided to get up from where we had been sitting (in the mouth of one of those little red-clay canyons) to walk back up the trail to the gruel line and OD tent. I still remember their sound slowly fading away as we walked back up the trail...
What days.
What cool memories Carl, wish I was there. Here we have the "professional" Duane. All business creating heaven on earth for us average folks. I can't tell, but does he have his eyes closed? He did that alot....I think he knew when he was hittin' the note perfectly.
Thank you Donnah, (Ms. Peach) for these wonderful pictures that conjure up wonderful memories for so many week after week.
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at August 7, 2008 09:37 AM'The answer my friend, is blowing through those amps, the answer is that all your love's in vain. Or it "Stormy Monday", again. Time to head over to the cemetary and chill for a while.
Posted by: Paco Malo at August 7, 2008 09:53 AMBecause I discovered that Little Starla is not as original on the internet as I'd foolishly hoped. Anybody got any ideas?
Anyway, yes, if I had to guess I'd say he does indeed have his eyes shut or almost shut. Got his mojo going for sure there. If just listening to his sound gives us ear-gasms, imagine what it must feel like to *make* the sounds. :)
Sometimes I wish I was a little older and had memories like Carl's.
How about Lil Martha , Starla ???
Posted by: csason at August 7, 2008 03:44 PMI want to like it. I really do. But somehow I just can't warm to it. Maybe because in my family we girls were taught to call a certain inconvenient occurrence Martha Monthly. lol
My boyfriend suggested Starlina. He calls me that sometimes for fun.
Starlina
GBG! If Greg Allman was gone, like his brother where would the band be today! Where would the band have been without Greggs vocals and song writing talents. Instrumental bands werent in back then, until Duane broke them. I am sure Duane wouldnt appreciate all of you holding a grudge for over thirty years! Good God, get over it and just jam to the dog's music and his little bro who has done Duanes legacy proud! I am sure if Duane was alive he would 'jump salty' all over those old school Gregg haters! Forgive and forget! Just jam to the ABB and be happy and feel fortunate there is still original members in it. That will be a sad, sad day when the band becomes a tribute band! I hope I dont live to see it. God bless y'all and keep the flame alive with the positive things and quit dwelling on the past! I cant think of any good negative thoughts have like this! Not a single one! The band certainly got over it, so you as fans should bury it! Its unhealthy too. "play the blues"!
Posted by: nuffsaid at August 7, 2008 08:32 PMHey hey. Lighten up. We don't really hate Gregg. I'm sure he's got his fan-type sites too, and I bet you some of them have their own little sprayers full of Duane-E-Rase (TM) too.
It's just this particular feature of the site is called "Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic" so we do tend to want to have Duane be the center of attention. No offense meant.
Why not swipe a page from Hannibal's playbook, and use Starling ??
Ok, that's my last suggestion..
Posted by: csason at August 7, 2008 11:19 PMOh, for heaven's sake. It's a joke about cropping the pic to get a better resize. The pics here have to have a pixel-width of no more than 450.
It's not like I'm busting on him for passing out face-first in a plate of spaghetti at a restaurant or anything...
Im sure old Gregg isnt the first one to pass out in a plate of pasta; and he sure wont be the last.
At least it wasnt soup, he might have drowned! :>
We will never know how well Duane would have handled his fame. He could have been worse than Gregg as in snorting white stuff behind the amps.
Blame it on fame, drugs and rock and roll! Unfortunately it has been a tradition to get high and play music since the beginning of the blues.
Heck, Back in Florida, Gregg and Duane saw Cher in the 60s and Duane said, little brother you will never have that, shes to good for you. (or something similar)
Imagine if you will People magazine headlines. "Duane and Gregg Allman fight over Cher at the Whiskey A Go Go!" A plate of pasta in Cher's face, what a disgrace!
Donna, I do have a sense of humor, honest! :>
I'd like to think that maybe Duane would have mellowed nicely in his old age, like EC..but hey who knows...he may have wound up doing 'junkie' roles in
Sopranos episodes...or better yet, running for office as President of the World.
There was a time period when EVERYBODY associated
with the ABB was a shadowy suspect of life, the hardcore fans of Duane Allman wanted someone to blame besides the truck driver..and Gregg seemed to be as handy as anyone else.
Flippin on his dealer didn't help..Everybody makes mistakes..but forgiveness requires and act of congress.
Posted by: csason at August 8, 2008 09:47 AMLMAO, Owen, at that bit about playing junkie characters on the Sopranos. COuldn't help myself, it just really struck me funny. But there's worse things to do in your middle-aged-rocker-phase than that. Just look at Brett Michaels, lol. ANYTHING is better than that fate.
btw, I took your Starling suggestion and cutesied it up just a bit. Thanks! I think I may keep it.
Like the new name there Starla. Our Wednesday regulars have quite the imagination.....lighten up nuffsaid....we just like to pick on baby bro...it's just fun. Your right about us not knowing what Duane would have turned out like, but I would bet you a $1000 bucks his future would not have included Cher! You have to realize....here in Florida Cracker Country....Wednesday's are Duane's day!
I have to renew my tag this week. It reads N2SKDOG. Most people think it's for Dog the Bounty Hunter eeeewwww. Have a good weekend everybody! And thanks again Donnah.
And of course (even though it's Friday) Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at August 8, 2008 12:14 PMI don't have a little brother of my own (or a big one, or a sister, for that matter) so I get my thrills by picking at various other people's little brothers. lol (Forestalling any more arguments: ALL big brothers pick at their little brothers at least some of the time, no matter how much they love/respect/like/work with/appreciate them. My boyfriend has two younger brothers, and when they're all together you should hear them go at it. But any one of them would cheefully take a bullet for any other of them.)
Is Starla's fevered little imagination working a bit too hard, or is there something significant behind the fact that the two most famous Duanes both are or were called some version of Dog? Hmmmm.
Personally, I have always been haunted by a conversation Duane had just after their fame began igniting the world. It went like this;
On the night of 28 October, with Fillmore East in the Top 10 on the album chart, Skyman spoke to Red Dog. "We got it made now," he told his favorite roadie. "We're on our way. Ain't gonna be no more beans for breakfast.
It always has greatly saddened me that old Duane never lived long enough to revel in the bounty fame contained. They were on the cusp and just starting to see the money roll in. It just never seemed fair that the most talented and influencial member of the band never lived long enough to enjoy it.
Especially after all the hardships the band endured in their beginning. It is just speculation now, but it would have been really cool to see how he wouldve handled it. Very well would be my guess. He had a lot of humanity in him.
I would guess he never would never have believed how much people still care and love him, even today.
Wail on Skydog, Wail on!
Posted by: nuffsaid at August 8, 2008 04:04 PMLittle Starla: the planet needs more of you, nickenamed "Little Wing", and less "bomber jet planes ... [can't say rest now or the Neocons will waterboard me]............Joni wrote it about Woooooodddddstoo.....................]]]]]]]]]

Paco Malo
Posted by: Paco Malo at August 10, 2008 08:35 AMOoh la la! Magnifique! Tres bien, mon amis!
But... does "toboggan" really mean "slide" as in guitar, in French? If so, that is so cute. And why didn't they teach us that in high school French class?
Servant Paco, after you peel me some grapes, will you do my toenails in Berry Blue for me? And after that, I could really and truly use a back rub and there's this laundry needs to be done? :)
Magnifique! Tant de personnes parlantes françaises visitent ici! Des marais de Louisana à la Tour Effiel à Paris, les vies de Skydog! "La roche sur et vous a un temps bon!" Ahh, le jeu le blues!
