Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

duanemyspfl.jpg
Bandleader Duane keeping things tight.
Wail on, Skydog!

Bonus pic from same concert. The palmetto in the background pegs it as probably a Florida venue:

Brother Duane always staying on top of things..

Posted by: Baron Thoma at December 3, 2008 07:23 PM

Where's Gregg and Dickie -- unless my eyesight's failing in my dotage. And that don't look like Butchie on far right kit neither.

Posted by: maryj at December 3, 2008 08:02 PM

Could be Johnny Sandlin on the drums and Paul Hornsby on the keys....

Posted by: mike the bike at December 3, 2008 10:29 PM

That's a palmetto? *squints* Yep, guess it is.
Mary, Donnah has this special spray she uses sometimes, it's called Gregg-B-Gone (R) She uses it to make Gregg disappear so we can get a better look at the other brother. It could be she used some here and Dickie wasn't on the ball and breathed in some of the mist and disappeared too.

I spy a piano in the back there, look like someone forgot to shake the can before they sprayed the gregg b gone.

But, then he has been sprayed here so much hes probably grown a immunity to it. lol
Rock on and have you a good time, y'all!

Posted by: rememberingduane at December 4, 2008 03:18 AM

That 'piano' looks like a B-3 on legs..Whoever is in Butch's spot is wearing one of his shirts..and playing morracos. hmmm

Looks like one of those High Springs/Lk. City
parks..or maybe Daytona..

Gregg was probably bangin a groupie in that 10 wheeler ;)

Nice shot(s) Donnah..They sure didn't put much pedestal between them and the commoners back then, did they ? Regardless.. Thanks Donnah !
As per usual !

I think an alternate "Gregg Be Gone" was used, 'Berry Block'. Yes, friends, I said 'Berry Bloc'. Found to be less harmful to small children and animals without long term effects of GBG. Available at all Costco & Walgreens stores, $4.99 a bottle 2 for $9.98!!!!. Found in the Miracle Whip aisle.

I believe it had a motto originally of 'Wail off' until the more popular 'Wail On' took hold.

Posted by: Willard at December 4, 2008 10:02 AM

Pic One nails it on "bandleader / maestro": everybody's eyes are glued on Duane's body language and audio (non-verbal) cues. Brilliant: thanks, as always, to Donnah the provider.

Posted by: Paco Malo at December 4, 2008 10:50 AM

Don't know where Dickey was but that is Tom Duchette (sp) playing the morracos. Butchy is probably a little further to the right. Who is at the mike in pic 1? I see Kim Paine at the stacks in back but can't figure out who's singing. Oh Donnah, pray tell......a little help here....

Would'nt you just love being there? Up close & personal! Sorry if I have misspelled anything....I broke my arm so this has taken me about 30 minutes......

Thank you Donnah......another wonderful Wednesday!

Wail on, Skydog! The original Commander in Chief!

Posted by: cindy at December 4, 2008 11:29 AM

I completely again with Owen: Gregg is somewhere within a hundred yards of these photos drunk and bangin' a groupie. Fur sure.

Posted by: Paco Malo at December 4, 2008 01:37 PM

Oh, Cindy! Ouch! I hope it heals up quickly. Wish I could sign your cast. (You have a special reason to want to be at the show in the pic, right? So you can get your cast signed.) lol
Willard, you forgot to mention that Berry Block comes in four yummy, refreshing scents: Autumn Forest, Summer Meadows, Country Cotton and Hawaiian Holiday. GBG only comes in Lemon Fresh and Magic Mint.

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 4, 2008 05:06 PM

oh, dang it gang the whole band went to a groupie bang after the gig..after all what rocker wouldnt!

None of them needed viagra, thats for sure!
Play the blues, get drunk, get laid, get high, sleep, play the blues, get drunk, get laid, get high, sleep and so on and so on!

As much crap as they were doin in the old days any one of the surviving original members will tell ya they r lucky to still b kicking..lol

Posted by: rememberingduane at December 5, 2008 01:47 AM

Either these guys weren't getting laid as much as we think they were or playing driving hard blues/jazz/rock is an effective spermicide. You'd think there would be word of out of wedlock Allman spawn all over the place if they were as busy as all that.

Posted by: Willard at December 5, 2008 10:00 AM

Or there's this, Willard: I've noticed the jeans in some of the pics I've seen look awfully tight. Like they'd be a little squeezy on the family jewels?

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 5, 2008 03:50 PM

Well, how many children does Gregg have? All good looking boys, dont know if he ever had any girls. Check out Devon Allman of Honeytribe. Hes all Allman and talented too. Wears a guitar astrap fashioned after the Zebo strap Duane used.www.myspace.com/honeytribe

Dickey has a talented son Duane who plays a mean guitar. Sounds like his dad.

Duane has a daugher, Im sure there would have been more kids. She began the relationship as a groupie of Duanes. They never got married, Duane didnt stick round long enough.

After the funeral a friend said of Duane, "Ol' Duane was married to his music, the truth be known," a close friend reflected after the funeral rites. "I guess him dyin' so young, though, was almost inevitable. He had a wild and reckless streak in him, and apart from pickin' his git-tar, he'd get...bored. I guess you could call it. On that account, he ran through a lotta chicks and a lotta mean dope in his green time, and he purely loved to smoke up the highways on bikes that was too fast for him. You don't live long if you live...impulsive like that. Duane was basically just a good ol' country boy, but he could jump salty, too, now and again. Hell, I'll miss him, myself. I'm just sorry he had to up and leave America so early. He had a fat lot left in him to do."

Young rockers always have time for girls and drugs. Ahh,yes, i remember when I was young, Im sure you do too. (wink) The girls and the booze come with the rock n roll territory. No judgement, just facts.
Rock on and have you a good time! And im proud to say Im a survivor of those days too!

That's definitely Thom Douchette (I looked up the spelling) on the marraccas (how do you spell those?) and don't forget Duane started with just Jaimoe and was trying to get Berry away from Dickie's band "Second Coming" to start a power trio. Maybe this is from that short period just before the Jacksonville Jam that kicked off the ABB. I don't know who the vocalist is, but it ain't Gregg & just maybe he's way far off in California...(?)

Posted by: Dennis at December 6, 2008 02:42 AM

It's maracas. Saw a pair in a tacky souvenir shop in Florida once, made of coconut shells, I think.

Posted by: Starla Darling, the Spelling Bee at December 6, 2008 09:00 AM

Ya, Im with Dennis... looks early enough to be before the Jacksonville Jam, and no, the guy with the maracas is sitting at the drums (does look a lot like Thom), and is the guy behind Duane at the mic standing at the keys there? Its what I thought at first, but he looks too far back.
Well, Berry just might have done your GBG work for you this time, Donnah! =P

But could it possibly be an experimental jam in Florida, pre-ABB?? This Duane getting the taste of a stage full of sound??
Or is it just Butch, Dickey and Gregg caught the flu or somethin, and Thom fill in on some drums??

If it is the ABB, it looks like the earlier stuff, when they were virtually unknown, except for the southern circuit fame as local boys. The venue looks cozy and up-close-type, so it would fit.

And, last thing, those collapsible tables Berry n Duane are standing on gotta be uneasy. No jumping for Duane here, he'd probably twist an ankle.

Posted by: Ben at December 6, 2008 09:07 PM

Or find himself folded up inside the table, cartoon-style, even as light as he appears to have been. :)

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 6, 2008 09:47 PM

I think I've figured it out..

This is a pre-ABB shot of Duane, Berry..Thom Doucette..and way in the back is the spittin' image of the high heeled boy himself, Stevie Winwood..just kidding. Stevie was too young to look that old...until later.

(WHO is that ?
Who cares..)

My first thought also, was, "Wow, this is somewhere between the Lace period and the Cowboy boot period."
(not really cited much, since they convinced Dickey
to use 'Sarasota' as his hometown)

THEENNNNNN I spotted the plaintop, which Duane
did not acquire till later..RIGHT ??

Remember, when in doubt, follow the guitar.

Checking back through the archives, it looks like he's wearing the same clothes as St. Pete, March 1970.

See the wednesday photos from July 16 and 30 of this year....

Posted by: mike the bike at December 7, 2008 04:55 PM

Ha ha ha! So we gals aren't the only ones who pay attention to his clothes!
Gotcha, Mike!

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 7, 2008 06:53 PM

Nah man, thats his definitely his Goldtop.

And ya, Duane looks like he has a pair of dress shoes on that he prob had leftover from the Lace period. =P Cant really tell. They might be boots.

Posted by: Ben at December 7, 2008 08:25 PM

See how it has the same set-in contour lines
http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/gallery/abb/offstage/thumb/Duane58LP.jpg

http://tigerx.com/people/allman.jpg

The Plaintop would have looked darker all the way out to the edge. The edges are the same color as the middle.

Posted by: Ben at December 7, 2008 08:29 PM

Ok.. I figured out who the fake drummer is..playing morracos is.. It's a future client of Dr. Lector's..tentatively known as Mason Verger...looks like him anyway.

See, Ben..You just take your perfect color vision
for granted..unlike me, who has no perfect color vision to use on a black and white photo.

SooOOooo... IF it's his GT, that narrows it down a bit, you .. you.. Date-a-Duane freaks.

Posted by: csason at December 8, 2008 07:05 AM

By the way...

Are those 'assasins' or what on top of that truck ??

Maybe they are lookouts for Gregg..and his floosey.

See how distanced I am from floosee's these days.??...I forgot how to spell them.

Posted by: csason at December 8, 2008 07:14 AM

Bzzzz, bzzzz, bzzzz... It's floozy, or floozie, whichever you like best.
Maybe they're up on the roof to keep the truck from being stolen? This was before The Club, after all.
