Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

allmanmugs.jpg
Drug Possession. Jackson, Alabama, March 22, 1971.
Record company lawyers on the way.
Wail on, Skydog!

From the book "Midnight Riders":

"They were charged with possession of heroin, marijuana, and phencyclidine, the animal tranquilizer known as PCP. Duane, Gregg, Jaimoe, Dickey, Butch, Berry, [roadies] Willie, Joe Dan, and "Tuffy" Phillips, who drove the equipment truck, were all arrested and charged with possession of narcotics and spent the night in jail. Gregg had a paranoid fear of jail cells and he went crazy, climbing the bars and screaming, before Duane made him shut up."

Cool shot.

Gonna spill on last weeks shot.....??

"Made him shut up." I wonder how he accomplished this wondrous feat? Possibly a shot of Greeg-B-Quiet? (R)
Sure they didn't leave out a few substances in that laundry list?

Duane looks a little to happy like he wanted to get busted..

Posted by: Baron Thoma at December 10, 2008 05:48 PM

I was thinking he looked like he hadn't read the part of the book where it says "When having your mug shot taken, look either pissed off, horrified, sorrowful, embarrassed or stunned."
Then again, maybe all those pharmaceuticals kept him perky.

Unreal. Wow.

Now that's a shit-eatin' grin if I ever saw one..

Posted by: mike at December 10, 2008 06:59 PM

Another silly question from Starla, one that's plagued me off and on since I came to this site and started looking at Skydog pics every week: I cannot get a fix on his eye color. Maybe I need glasses, maybe I need a new monitor (highly likely). Maybe I'm just crazy. (Also highly likely.) Somebody help me out?

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 10, 2008 08:18 PM

If I remember correctly, shortly after the bust their manager decided their drug use was getting out of hand and sent them to rehab. Now, I'm sure rehab back then wasnt much. They werent in there but a week or two.

Duane, though evidently looked significantly better, his eyes were clear and he looked much healthier than before rehab.

Duane had OD a couple of times and nearly died. The last time was about a year before his tragic motorcycle accident. Duane was in the hospital near death. The Doctor in charge didnt give him much hope. His best friend Berry prayed frantically to God to spare him for "just one more year." Berry got his prayer answered. And it was just about a year to the day that Duane passed. Berry never got over Duane's death. And died about a year later.

I do know that they didnt find any drugs in Duane when he died.

Thanks for the pics Donnah! Never saw them before. You are indeed a expert at digging up the old photographs.. hail, hail, Donnah for keeping the Skydog pics coming!

I never trust anybody who never got high. If you quit that's cool, but weed is so embedded in 1971 rock culture -- if you pass that joint then you are missing the point.

I did it both ways, 13-19, rockin' on spirits, then on to tea, and presently: I dumped the liquors almost six years ago and switched to wakin' and bakin' on a tight budget. And reinventing myself as a writer so my homework, say last night, is studying "Apocalypse Now". Not bad work if your bipolar disorder gets (Social Security Disability Insurance; my mom made me do it to calm her down) you a small government grant to be a starving artist instead of a drunk lawyer.

I hope this helps, Starla, but you're the "same kind of crazy as me." -- Delbert McClinton;

Duane and Dicky look like they could care less. I believe Dickey's behavior was the reason for the bust. He was outside a restuarant where some of the others were eating and was going nutso and walking out in the woods raising cane. Berry got him in the car but he kept getting out raising the suspicions of the "straight laced" folks inside. They were a cute bunch weren't they? I also believe the cops put Red Dog in the cell close to the back door of the joint and a bunch of people were looking in at them so 'Dog got naked and started hanging from the bars scaring the sheet out of the on lookers. They thought he was nuts. No wonder he was Duane's "hoss". Just another day in the lives of a talented bunch of young men from the 1970 era. Wonder why Gregg was so scared of jail cells? Maybe he thought he was a little pretty to be there with harden criminals.;}

Starla, I think he had brownish/green eyes. I have 3 kids, all with brown eyes. 1 has dark brown almost black eyes, 1 has brown/amber eyes and 1 brownish/green eyes. I have green (grass color),my husband brown. I think DA's were the color of my son's.Can't really see them in pics, all the up close ones are in black & white.

Thanks Donnah...another wonderful Wednesday!

Wail on, Skydog!

I'm sure Duane is smiling like that to be a smart ass. And I love the snide look on Dickey's face too, kinda sayin, "Yea, yea...whatever. I'm beautiful. Kiss my ass immediately." Berry's kinda thinking, "Shit. Piss. Hell". And Gregg looks like he's thinking, "I'm shovin' that camera up yer ass when yer done you *expletive* mother *expletive*! Where's the whores?!" Butch just looks silently pissed.

And Paco, if you DON'T "pass that joint", you're a bogard! :)

Thanks for the very interesting pic, Donnah!

Nice goin', Berry! Forget "be careful what you wish for" how about "Be careful how you phrase it."?!
Thank you Cindy! I would have guessed hazel too. Mainly because I have a friend who has almost that exact same hair color and her eyes are a dark hazel. Her complexion's a bit darker though.

Posted by: Starla Darling (a brown-eyed girl) at December 11, 2008 03:57 PM

If I remember right from Randy Poe's book I think, Duane's nickname Skydog actually came about due to him being high all the time. I think it was Wilson Picket (could be wrong) who started calling him "Skyman" because of it. (I almost said because of "his highness" which would be appropriate for us Duane lovers). He already kinda had the nickname "Dog" from his buddies so they ended up combining them & got Skydog.

And Starla, I always kinda assumed Duane had blue eyes because of his blondish hair but even in his black & white pics they do look too dark to be blue, so I'm inclined to agree with you & Cindy about the brownish/green/hazel.

Posted by: Lisa at December 11, 2008 04:52 PM

What happened to the picture of Jaimo? I fear that since it was Alabama in 1971 the cops had a "special" room for him in "seperate" quarters. Dickey kinda looks like Chucky Manson in that pic and Duane is beaming like Raymond Burr in the company of a young sailor. Must've been some good stuff!

"Maybe you think marijuana is harmless, but let me tell you something, punk. Every time we find a body in a back alley O.D.d on smack we find three sticks of Mary Jane in the pocket."
- Jack Webb as Officer Joe Friday, "Dragnet"

Posted by: Steven at December 11, 2008 05:03 PM

Yeah, blue eyes would show up as light in b&w. I do know a little girl who has very dark blue eyes, but she also has very dark hair. Most blondes and redheads have the lighter blue.

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 11, 2008 05:05 PM

"Thank you, gee-tar guy! Go backstage and do your drugs now!"
Achmed the Dead Terrorist, after he did "Jingle Bombs." Anybody seen that one?

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 11, 2008 05:36 PM

Never have been sure what color Duane's eyes were. He had red/blonde hair. I would guess green or blue. Someone should ask Gregg, or Butch or Jaimo. They would surely know.

Drugs always end up ruining lives and careers. In the beginning it seems innocent enough. Weekend fun, but then they turn on you and take over your life. Take your family, your friends, your self esteem, your job and your money. The worst scenerio is when they take your life.

The early 70s no one was really aware of long term affects and took what they thought were recreational drugs. No one realized how one drug leads to another. Back then I guess ignorance was bliss. The Allman boys even kept special tea in the fridge laced with lsd.

But you can read in Skydog that Duane originally fired guys in the band..roadies etc for using needles. In the end they all began main lining heroin. I dont know how long they were junkies but the surviving members all kicked their habits.

Im guessing thats why Dickey had to go. everyone was clean but him.

The surviving members are blessed they were strong enough to "beat their demons." And Im sure because of that they are "soul survivors" and a living touring Allman Brothers Band.

God Bless em all! And all of you who remember and and keep Skydog's memory alive! Wail on, Skydog!

Starla, dont know if it was a premonition or what but Duane told several people before he died that he knew he wouldnt be around very much longer.

It was just a matter of time. He was bigger than life. Everyone said he was always in a hurry like he was desperate to get things done while he had time.

Maybe people like Duane only come around once in a lifetime. We were blessed to know him.

Where ever you are...Wail on Skydog, Wail on!

March 22, 1971? How many days between this and the Fillmore shows?

And how did they stay out of jail?

Wail on, Donnah!!!

Posted by: Surfer Joe at December 12, 2008 03:55 AM

The Fillmore East shows were on March 11, 12, & 13, 1971. I was lucky snough to be at the early March 12 show and the mighty Johnny Winter was also on the bill. Dem wuz da daze! The bust was also 2 days after they blew the roof off the Warehouse in N'Orleenz on MArch 20 which I'm lucky anough to have a bootleg tape of. Wail on, Skydog!

Posted by: Steven at December 12, 2008 12:23 PM

That's right, thanks- got the dates mixed up and was thinking they were there somewhere in the March twenties.

Absolutely incredible that you were there- like witnessing the Gettysburg address or Babe Ruth's called shot.

So how did they avoid going to trial on this? Or did Bull Connor just hose 'em down and set the dogs on 'em?

Posted by: Surfer Joe at December 12, 2008 04:14 PM

I seem to recall watching the "Behind the Music" about Lynnyrd Skynnyrd, or however you spell it (I'm exhausted!) and Ronnie Van Zant was apparently absolutely convinced he wasn't going to live to see 30. I guess some people do have premonitions, or else they are just aware, on some level, of what the odds are, all factors considered.

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 12, 2008 05:20 PM

Yes Starla Duane loved his pharmaceuticals:)

Posted by: Baron Thoma at December 12, 2008 07:20 PM

The PCP that was on the street at the time was called Woodstock...evidenced by the lack of clothing
in the Donnah Birthday series, (if you're a split tail) and by the Capone-esque smile Duane is sporting.

Dang Butch..cheer up, it's more than a gig, it's a life altering experience.

Thanks Donnah..and I if i don't see ya here, I'll see ya, Hear ?
Merry Christmas you bunch of Duaneheads.

Posted by: csason at December 12, 2008 09:35 PM

"Split tails." Niiiice, Owen! Does your mama know about that?

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 13, 2008 08:35 AM

I remember that Fillmore East show vividly. I went to see Johnny Winter and had barely heard of the Allmans at the time, but boyoboy did they tear it up! I was 15 at the time and was impressed enough to go out and buy their first album and "Idlewild South" the next day. I had my father's camera with me and took most of the pictures on the roll of Johnny, but I did take one picture of Duane and one of Berry from my 5th row dead center seat (and there wasn't a bad seat at the Fillmore). A lot of those pictures went MIA on me a long time ago, but I still have the one of Duane and when I get my stuff out of storage and if I ever figure out how, I'll be happy to scan it and send a copy for Donnah to post and for all to see. It's an almost in focus shot of him playing his tobacco Les Paul with a cigarette burning in the neck and he's bathed in red light. It's no award winner, but it's always cool to see pictures of the ol' boy. Wail on, Skydog!

P.S. - For the record I've been good friends with Johnny & Edgar Winter since the 80s and there are some cool pics of us on my site. Johnny told me that Duane was a great guy, but back then he hung out with Gregg more.

Here's a virtual digital shotgun to make up for my bad manners. My stash is yours, hon. My bad.

Da Wakin, Bakin, Paco

Don't you be a bogart either, Lisa! I would like a little of that myself, you know.
Oh wait, Paco will probably roll me one for my very own if I ask him nicely... Sweet Paco? Please?

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 14, 2008 08:25 PM

I know the Winter brothers, I live in there old hometown. Everyone here knows of them. Famous like Janis Joplin. SE Texas boys and girls. lol.
We got more famous country picker here now than famous rockers.

Posted by: rememberingduane at December 14, 2008 09:46 PM

You're from Beaumont? Johnny & Edgar are great guys and monster musicians. I never would've seen Duane play if it wasn't for Johnny! The adventure continues......

Posted by: Steven at December 15, 2008 03:53 PM

I used to go see JW every year over at Janis Landing..but I think the proper term now would be
'was' in reference to the "great musician" thingy..

In fact, it kind of pisses me off to see them wheel him out on stage and put the guitar in his hands.

Posted by: csason at December 15, 2008 11:44 PM

Does anyone know a Johnny Winter Blues song with the line "My candy cane is hard, drippin' sweet honey to your door." I believe it also has the line, "They call me sweet papa" Back in my formative years Classic Rock station KSHE in St. Louis would play this song. It is one of many songs I used to hear that sadly have become fragments of lyrics to songs I don't know the origin.

Posted by: Willard at December 16, 2008 10:03 AM

Willard, you're thinking of "Sweet Papa John" aren't you? I have heard that song. I think I heard it last year around Xmas-time when seems like half the radio stations around here played nothing but Xmas music from Thanksgiving on.
Kinda raunchy to be playing that at holiday time, no? :)

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 16, 2008 03:29 PM

Its the candy cane! Nothing says Christmas like peppermint.

Posted by: Willard at December 16, 2008 03:36 PM

Nothing else but a candy cane will work in that song. "chocolate-dipped pretzels covered in green and red sprinkles" screws up the whole rhythm.

Posted by: Starla Darling at December 16, 2008 05:35 PM

Well, this is a bit of a late post, but I've only just gotten my power back. We had an ice storm up here, nastiest since '98. Didnt have power for 4 1/2 days, but Im glad everythings back!!

HAHAAAAAAAA
I LOVE Duanes mugshot! Totally describes everything Randy Poe took paragraphs to write out. He's like "Okay, I say cheeeeeeese now right?" He'd made a name for himself with the local P.D. terrorizing neighborhoods on his bike. Anyways, he'd been in so much trouble with the law, he looks like he's just going through the motions, nothing new or scary to him, and Duane wouldnt look upset or pissed in any picture.

And yea.. I can see that little smirk on Dickeys face hahaha! Wow... I look a LOT like Gregg in this picture!!! Like way more than I ever thought of pictures before! Thats FREAKY (and no, I dont partake in contraband paraphenelia)

Thanks Donnah, this is a great one haha!

Sorry about the late post. Been so busy with Xmas but came to see if there was a new picture of our Great Duane.

Thanks for the virtual buzz Paco! Bzzzzz..mmm. Don't worry Starla, I'm always happy to share! :)
